Safety
Riding Helmet
A helmet designed for riding to protect your head.
- Always buckle it.
- Ask an adult to check the fit.
Riding Boots
Boots with a small heel help keep your foot safer in the stirrup.
- Closed-toe only.
- Ask your instructor what’s best.
Groundwork
Halter
A headcollar used to lead and handle a horse.
- Ask before putting it on.
- Keep fingers away from buckles when the horse moves.
Lead Rope
A rope used with a halter to lead a horse.
- Never wrap it around your hand.
- Hold with two hands when learning.
Grooming
Curry Comb
A rubber brush used in circles to loosen dirt on the body.
- Avoid bony areas like legs and face.
- Use gentle circles.
Dandy Brush
A stiff brush used to flick dirt away after the curry comb.
- Brush in the direction of hair.
- Use lighter pressure on sensitive horses.
Body Brush
A soft brush for finishing and dusting the coat.
- Great for face with extra care (ask first).
Hoof Pick
A tool used to remove rocks and dirt from the bottom of the hoof.
- Pick from heel to toe.
- Avoid poking the frog.
Mane Comb
A comb used to detangle mane and tail gently.
- Start at the bottom and hold the hair so you don’t pull.
Sweat Scraper
A tool used to scrape water or sweat off the coat after washing or work.
- Use gentle strokes and avoid bony areas.
Tack
Saddle
The seat and structure used for riding.
- Only place it with help until you’re trained.
- Never drop it.
Saddle Pad
A pad under the saddle to protect the horse’s back and help fit.
- Keep it clean and smooth (no wrinkles).
Girth
The strap that holds the saddle on (English tack).
- Tighten slowly in steps.
- Ask an instructor to check fit.
Stirrups
Foot supports attached to the saddle.
- Ask an adult to help set the correct length.
- Foot should not be pushed in too far.
Bridle
Headgear used to guide the horse; often holds the bit.
- Keep fingers away from the horse’s teeth.
- Ask for help when putting it on.
Bit
A metal piece that goes in the horse’s mouth (in some bridles).
- Never put fingers inside the mouth.
- Let an adult handle if you’re unsure.
Reins
Straps used to guide the horse’s direction and speed (with your instructor).
- Hands low and quiet for beginners.
- Ask how to hold them correctly.
Stable
Bucket
A container for water (and sometimes feed).
- Tell an adult if it’s broken or dirty.
Tack Cloth
A cloth used to wipe sweat and dirt from tack.
- Use only what your instructor allows.
