- Curry comb
- Dandy brush
- Body brush
- Hoof pick
- Mane comb
Step by step
Ask your instructor where the horse should stand for grooming.
Check: Horse is calm and secured the right way.
Start with the curry comb on the body (not legs or face).
Check: Gentle circles.
Use the dandy brush to flick dirt off in the direction of the hair.
Check: Dirt moves away from the horse.
Finish with the body brush for a soft, clean coat.
Check: Coat looks smooth.
Move around the horse slowly with one hand touching as you go.
Check: I didn’t surprise the horse.
End with a quick body check: legs, belly, and any tender spots (tell an adult if you find one).
Check: I reported anything unusual.
Common mistakes
- Using hard brushes on the face
- Moving too fast around the hind end

- Body first, face last (soft brush).
Stop and get help if
- Horse pins ears during brushing
- You see a wound
