What you need
Before You Meet a Horse
- Closed-toe boots (ask your instructor)
- No loose strings or dangling scarves
- Calm voice and slow steps
Step by step
Ask an adult/instructor: “Is it okay to approach?”
Check: I got permission.
Notice ears and body tension before you step closer.
Check: Horse looks calm enough to try.
Walk toward the shoulder, not straight at the face.
Check: I’m beside the shoulder area.
Speak softly so the horse knows you’re there.
Check: My voice is calm.
Offer the back of your hand to sniff (only if your instructor says).
Check: Hand stays still and safe.
Touch the shoulder gently first, then move slowly as you groom or lead.
Check: One hand stays on the horse when I move around.
Common mistakes
- Rushing toward the face
- Waving hands near the muzzle

- Slow steps. Shoulder first.
Stop and get help if
- Ears pin back
- Horse steps away quickly
