Before You Meet a Horse

  • Closed-toe boots (ask your instructor)
  • No loose strings or dangling scarves
  • Calm voice and slow steps

Step by step

  1. Ask your instructor to show the halter parts and how it opens.

    Check: I can point to the buckle.

  2. Approach at the shoulder, then place the noseband gently.

    Check: No sudden movements near the muzzle.

  3. Buckle the halter with instructor help.

    Check: It’s snug but not tight.

  4. Clip the lead rope on and check the clip is closed.

    Check: Clip closed.

  5. Hold the lead rope safely—never wrap it around your hand.

    Check: Hands free to let go if needed.

  6. Practice standing still next to the shoulder before walking.

    Check: Horse stays calm next to me.

Common mistakes

  • Wrapping the rope
  • Standing in front of the horse

Coach cues

  • Rope never wraps.
  • Shoulder spot.

Stop and get help if

  • Horse pulls away
  • Clip is broken
