Before You Meet a Horse
- Closed-toe boots (ask your instructor)
- No loose strings or dangling scarves
- Calm voice and slow steps
Step by step
Stand at the shoulder, facing forward with the horse.
Check: I’m not in front of the horse.
Hold the rope with two hands (one near the clip, one holding extra slack).
Check: Rope is not wrapped.
To start: walk forward first, then invite the horse to follow.
Check: My steps are steady.
To stop: stop your feet and breathe out. Ask your instructor about a gentle cue.
Check: Horse stops calmly.
To turn: look where you’re going and turn your body first.
Check: We turned without pulling.
Practice a short path, then reward calm standing.
Check: We can stand for 5 seconds.

- Walking too close to other horses
