Before You Meet a Horse
- Closed-toe boots (ask your instructor)
- No loose strings or dangling scarves
- Calm voice and slow steps
Step by step
Stand near the shoulder when you can (ask your instructor to point it out).
Check: I can name the shoulder spot.
Avoid standing directly behind the horse.
Check: I’m always visible to the horse.
When you need to pass behind, do it only with instructor guidance.
Check: I asked before moving behind.
Keep your hands away from the mouth and the bit.
Check: Fingers safe.
Watch ears and body tension for warning signs.
Check: I noticed one calm sign and one warning sign.
Practice ‘pause and breathe’ if the horse looks worried.
Check: I can calm my body.
Common mistakes
