What you need

Equipment

Before Riding

  • Helmet fits and is buckled
  • Stirrups even
  • Girth checked with instructor
  • Hooves picked

Step by step

  1. Place the helmet level on your head (not tipped back).

    Check: It covers my forehead.

  2. Tighten the fit so it doesn’t wiggle.

Check: No big wobble when I shake my head.

  3. Buckle the strap and ask an adult to check it.

Check: Strap is snug under my chin.

  4. Do a quick ‘two-finger’ comfort check under the chin strap.

    Check: Comfortable and secure.

  5. Before mounting, double-check buckle and strap.

    Check: Buckled and ready.

Common mistakes

  • Helmet tipped back
  • Strap left unbuckled

Coach cues

  • Level. Snug. Buckled.

Stop and get help if

  • Helmet rocks side to side
  • Strap feels broken
