  • Stirrups even
  • Girth checked with instructor
  • Hooves picked

Step by step

  1. Gather tack and place it neatly where your instructor says.

    Check: Nothing is on the ground to trip over.

  2. Groom the saddle area and check for dirt that could rub.

    Check: Back looks clean.

  3. Place the saddle pad slightly forward, then slide it into place.

    Check: Pad is smooth with no wrinkles.

  4. With help, lift the saddle and set it gently on the pad.

    Check: Saddle placed quietly.

  5. Attach the girth on one side, then walk around safely to attach the other side.

    Check: Girth is attached on both sides.

  6. Tighten the girth slowly in steps and ask your instructor to check.

    Check: Instructor approved the fit.

  7. Put on the bridle only with instructor help (keep fingers away from teeth).

    Check: Bridle is on correctly.

  8. Check stirrups are even (ask for help setting length).

    Check: Stirrups even.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping grooming under the saddle
  • Tightening girth too fast
