Junior Alvarado, the jockey who rode Sovereignty, finally has the race he was missing. On Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, at Keeneland, he won his first Breeders' Cup Classic by 1¾ lengths in 2:00.36, and fellow Venezuelan Javier Castellano finished second on The Puma.

The rest of this page is the reference: who Alvarado is, how he rode the race, and why so many of America's best riders come from Venezuela.

Who Is Junior Alvarado?

Junior Alvarado is a 40-year-old Venezuelan jockey and the regular rider of Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year. He has 2,401 career wins from 15,282 starts and more than $175 million in purse earnings, according to America's Best Racing (ABR).

He is the son of a jockey, Rafael Alvarado, who rode in Venezuela. Santa Anita's 2024 biography and NYRA's profile say he was born May 20, 1986, in Barquisimeto, though a 2025 Daily Racing Form story says Maracaibo. NPR reported that he started out helping in stables in Barquisimeto.

The path north looks like this:

  • Dec. 30, 2005: first winner, on Esteivana at La Rinconada near Caracas, at age 19, according to NYRA and Santa Anita. Venezuela's Meridiano instead puts his first win at Valencia, in 2003 in one story and late 2005 in another.
  • 2007: moves to the U.S. and wins his first American race at Gulfstream Park that February.
  • 2009: leading rider at Arlington Park.
  • 2010: moves to New York to ride full time.
  • 2023: 2,000th win, at Gulfstream Park.
  • 2024: wins the Saudi Cup on Senor Buscador and the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, voted by fellow riders.

The Junior Alvarado Jockey Story: Late Bloom, Hard Road

Alvarado's biggest wins came late, and that is the real story. His first Breeders' Cup win came at 36, and his first Kentucky Derby at 38.

The years before were rough. ABR reported in 2025 that he had been through four shoulder surgeries, three broken collarbones, two fractured backs, a severe concussion and seven months out with an ankle injury. He struggled to win back business afterward and at one point thought about quitting.

The turn came through trainer Bill Mott. A mount on Cody's Wish in the 2022 Westchester Stakes grew into a partnership that later brought the ride on Sovereignty.

In 2025 that pair won the Kentucky Derby by 1½ lengths on a sloppy track, the Belmont Stakes by 3 lengths and the Travers by 10. Read the horse's whole story in our Sovereignty profile.

Junior Alvarado's Breeders' Cup Classic: What a Jockey Actually Does

A Classic is 1¼ miles, about two minutes. A jockey makes only a few decisions, but each one has to be right. This was the smallest Classic field ever, seven horses, which left fewer traffic problems but nowhere to hide.

Here is how Alvarado's ride broke down:

  1. Settle. Knightsbridge, Sovereignty's stablemate, went to the lead, reaching the half-mile in :47.64 and six furlongs in 1:11.43. Alvarado sat fifth, saving ground along the rail and within striking distance.
  2. Read the horse. Alvarado told BloodHorse the colt was “very nice in the bridle,” meaning he was pulling comfortably without being asked. Godolphin and NBC both reported that he never had a doubt.
  3. Find clear running room. “I put him in the clear, started picking it up little by little without me actually asking him,” he said. “In the clear” means no horses in front or alongside to block a run.
  4. Choose the moment. The move came at the three-eighths pole, three furlongs from the finish, with The Puma following.
  5. Finish. Turning for home, Sovereignty switched leads, changing which front leg reaches farthest, which gives a tiring horse a fresh stride. Alvarado said that was when he knew nobody could come faster.

The lesson is patience. Moving too early wastes energy, and waiting too long can leave a horse boxed in.

What to Watch on Your Next Replay

  • Where the rider sits in the first quarter mile, and whether the horse is fighting for its head.
  • Whether the rider stays on the rail or swings wide on the turns.
  • When the rider's hands start moving, compared with the horses around them.
  • The lead change at the top of the stretch.

Junior Alvarado's Five Breeders' Cup Wins

ABR counts the Classic as his fifth Breeders' Cup win, and the record fits:

His best earlier Classic finish was second on Olympiad in 2022. He would have ridden Sovereignty in the 2025 Classic too, but the colt was scratched with a fever. See the Breeders' Cup 2026 guide for how the weekend works.

Why Venezuela Produces So Many Top Jockeys

There is no single official answer, but reporting points to a few clear reasons. Castellano is the best second example.

At 49, he is a Hall of Famer with four straight Eclipse Awards as top jockey (2013-16). He had 12 Breeders' Cup wins before this race, including the 2004 Classic on Ghostzapper, and he won the 2023 Kentucky Derby on Mage.

  • Racing matters at home. Hall of Famer Ramón Domínguez, also Venezuelan, told NPR that the sport is a big deal there.
  • Formal training. NPR reported that Venezuela, like Mexico and Panama, has established jockey academies.
  • A launch pad. Alvarado, Castellano, Domínguez and Emisael Jaramillo all came through La Rinconada in Caracas, and Daily Racing Form reported in December 2025 that each would get a Grade 1 race named after him there. Meridiano says Castellano started at Santa Rita, in Zulia, and Alvarado at Valencia.
  • Family. Alvarado followed his father into the saddle. Castellano's family also includes jockeys.
  • Opportunity. Castellano arrived at 19 on a tourist visa, then hired a lawyer for the paperwork he needed to ride. The U.S. offers more tracks and bigger purses.

The tradition runs deep. Gustavo Ávila won the 1971 Derby and Preakness on Cañonero II for Venezuelan trainer Juan Arias. Sonny Leon won the 2022 Derby on Rich Strike.

The Puma has another Venezuelan link: his trainer, Gustavo Delgado, also trained Mage. Assistant trainer Gustavo Delgado Jr. told BloodHorse the colt kept digging all the way and that he was proud of him.

What to Watch Next

  • New top mounts. Godolphin says Sovereignty and Knightsbridge join the Darley stallion roster at Jonabell Farm in 2027, so Alvarado needs a new star.
  • The Puma in 2027. Delgado Jr. said the stable is in really good shape for next year.
  • Castellano nearing 50. He turned 49 in October and is still riding at the top level.
  • More Venezuelan names. Check the jockey line in the program next time you watch a big race. You will start to notice them.
