Why it's trending
Warwoven won the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas on Oct 10, 2026, and his trainer has flagged the Cox Plate two weeks later. Fans want to know what the race is and why a three-year-old taking on older horses is such a big story.
TL;DR
- The Cox Plate 2026 is set for Saturday, Oct 24 at Flemington, the first time it has left Moonee Valley, which is being rebuilt.
- Warwoven won the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) by 1¾ lengths in 1:35.17, his sixth win from nine starts and the Golden Rose–Guineas double.
- Trainer Bjorn Baker is considering the Cox Plate but wants to see how the colt recovers first. It's a plan, not a lock.
- Under weight-for-age, a three-year-old colt carries 49.5kg in the Cox Plate, compared with 59kg for males aged five and up.
- The last horse to win the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate in the same spring was Red Anchor in 1984.

Cox Plate 2026: what happened and what's next
The Cox Plate 2026 is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Flemington, and the horse everyone is talking about is the three-year-old colt Warwoven. On October 10 he won the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas, and his trainer, Bjorn Baker, has flagged the Cox Plate as the next target if the colt pulls up well.
That would mean a young horse taking on the best older horses in Australia over a longer trip. Nothing is locked in yet. Baker has said he wants to see how Warwoven recovers before he decides.
Caulfield Guineas 2026 result: how Warwoven won
Warwoven, ridden by Rachel King, went off favorite in the $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and made it look easy.
- 1st: Warwoven (Rachel King, trainer Bjorn Baker)
- 2nd: Blind Raise, beaten 1¾ lengths
- 3rd: Call Me Coach, a further 3¼ lengths back
- Time: 1:35.17 on a good track
It was his first run in Melbourne and his first try at a mile. It was also King's first Caulfield Guineas win.
Why the double matters
Two weeks earlier Warwoven won the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill in Sydney by three lengths. Winning the Golden Rose and the Caulfield Guineas in the same spring is rare. Only In Top Swing (2003), The Autumn Sun (2018) and Ole Kirk (2020) had done it before him.
His record now reads six wins from nine starts, including three straight group wins this spring. He is a son of first-crop sire Sword of State, out of the Group 2-winning mare Needle and Thread.
What is the Cox Plate?
The W.S. Cox Plate is a Group 1 weight-for-age race over 2040 meters (about 1¼ miles) for horses aged three and up. It was first run in 1922 and is widely called Australia's championship race, because the weights are set by age and sex rather than form.
In plain terms: it's where the best middle-distance horses meet on fairly level terms. Prize money is A$6 million. If "Group 1" is new to you, our explainer on what a Grade 1 race is covers Group vs Grade.
Why Flemington this year
The Cox Plate has always been run at Moonee Valley, a tight track with a short home straight. The Valley closed after the 2025 race for a major redevelopment, so Racing Victoria awarded the 2026 race to Flemington while the Valley is rebuilt. It is the first Cox Plate run away from Moonee Valley.
That changes the puzzle. Flemington is a big, galloping track with a long straight, so tactics built around the Valley's sharp turns may not apply. The Valley is due to reopen in 2027.
Recent winners
The mare Via Sistina won the last two Cox Plates (2024 and 2025). Her 2025 win, by a half-head over stablemate Buckaroo, was the final Cox Plate at the old Valley.
What is weight-for-age racing?
Weight-for-age (WFA) is a fixed scale. Every horse's weight depends only on age, sex, distance and time of year, not on how good it is. That's the opposite of a handicap like the Melbourne Cup, where an official gives better horses more weight.
The idea is simple: a three-year-old is still growing, so it gets a big weight break against mature horses. Females get a 2kg break against males of the same age.
| Age | Male (kg) | Female (kg) |
|---|---|---|
| 3-year-old | 49.5 | 47.5 |
| 4-year-old | 57.5 | 55.5 |
| 5 and older | 59.0 | 57.0 |
So if Warwoven runs, he would carry about 9.5kg less than a five-year-old male. That sounds like a gift, but it reflects how much more physically mature the older horses are in October.
The allowance shrinks over the season
As a three-year-old matures, the scale closes the gap. By the autumn races in April, three-year-olds carry several kilos more than they do in the Cox Plate. That's why trainers often see spring as the best window to take on older horses.
Why a 3-year-old in the Cox Plate is a big deal
The weight break helps, but the history shows it's still hard.
- Distance: Warwoven has never raced beyond 1600m. The Cox Plate is 440m further.
- Opposition: He'd face proven Group 1 winners, not just horses his own age.
- Turnaround: It comes just two weeks after a hard Guineas win.
Only a handful of three-year-olds have won since 1970, including Red Anchor (1984), Octagonal (1995), Savabeel (2004), So You Think (2009) and Shamus Award (2013).
The Red Anchor link
Red Anchor is the last horse to win the Caulfield Guineas and the Cox Plate in the same spring, back in 1984. He added the Victoria Derby that year too.
If Warwoven runs and wins, he ends a 42-year gap. If he doesn't run, that's a normal call for a young horse with a long career ahead.
How it fits the Melbourne Spring Carnival
The Cox Plate sits in the middle of a packed few weeks of Australian racing. Here's the rough order:
- Oct 10: Caulfield Guineas (done, Warwoven won)
- Oct 17: The Everest at Randwick in Sydney, plus the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne. See our Everest 2026 explainer
- Oct 24: Cox Plate at Flemington
- Nov 3: Melbourne Cup at Flemington. See our Melbourne Cup 2026 guide
The Everest is a sprint, the Cox Plate is the middle-distance championship and the Melbourne Cup is a 3200m handicap. Each tests something different, which is why few horses run in more than one.
What to watch next
If you're following along, here's your checklist for the next two weeks:
- Recovery reports: Baker's comments on how Warwoven pulled up will be the first real signal.
- Acceptances and barrier draw: The field and gates are confirmed in race week. Check the official Racing Victoria or VRC sites.
- Track condition: Rain can change a lot over 2040m, especially for a horse stepping up in distance.
- The older brigade: Watch the Turnbull and Caulfield Cup form for who emerges as the main older rival. Our Turnbull Stakes 2026 story is a good start.
- Riders: Jockeys are confirmed with the field in race week. Rachel King rode Warwoven to his Guineas win.
New to racing?
Look for the weights next to each horse's name in the field list. In a WFA race, you'll see the three-year-olds near the bottom, carrying the lightest loads. Our glossary covers terms like barrier, acceptance and lengths.

Frequently asked questions
When is the Cox Plate 2026?
Saturday, October 24, 2026, at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It moved from Moonee Valley for 2026 while the Valley is redeveloped.
Is Warwoven running in the Cox Plate?
It's the plan, not a certainty. Trainer Bjorn Baker flagged the race as a target if Warwoven ran well in the Guineas, but he wants to see how the colt recovers before committing.
What is weight-for-age in horse racing?
A fixed scale where each horse's weight depends on its age, sex, the distance and the time of year, not its form. Younger horses and females carry less to even out physical maturity.
How much weight does a 3-year-old carry in the Cox Plate?
A three-year-old colt or gelding carries 49.5kg and a filly 47.5kg. Males aged five and up carry 59kg, so the young colt gets about 9.5kg off.
Who won the Caulfield Guineas 2026?
Warwoven, ridden by Rachel King and trained by Bjorn Baker, won by 1¾ lengths from Blind Raise, with Call Me Coach third, in 1:35.17.
When did a horse last win the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate?
Red Anchor did it in 1984, the same spring he also won the Victoria Derby. No horse has managed the double since.
