Turnbull Stakes 2026: what it is and who runs

The Turnbull Stakes 2026 is a Group 1 over 2000m at Flemington on Saturday, October 3, worth A$750,000. It is the first Group 1 at 2000m of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, after Birdman won the 1800m Underwood Stakes on September 19, and defending winner Sir Delius (Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott) heads a field of 15. Sir Delius has drawn barrier 9 and carries top weight of 59kg, according to the bets.com.au barrier draw. He is a six-year-old who ran fourth in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on September 12. Craig Williams rides, and his stable calls the race a stepping stone to the Cox Plate on October 24.

What is the Turnbull Stakes?

The Turnbull Stakes is one of the oldest feature races on the Australian calendar, first run in 1865. It is a Group 1 for horses aged four and older, run over 2000m on Flemington's turf on the spring "moving day" card. Wikipedia lists the conditions as set weights with penalties, not weight-for-age; the Cox Plate is the weight-for-age race, and we explain that idea below.

The back-to-back question

Reports say Sir Delius could become the first back-to-back winner since Winx. Races.com.au makes that claim, and the winners list on Wikipedia agrees: Winx won in 2017 and 2018, and nobody has won two in a row since.

Why trainers use the Turnbull as a lead-up

Most top horses have a short spring. A trainer wants a fit horse on the day of the big target without wearing it out first. The Turnbull gives a Group 1 run at 2000m before the races that carry the prestige.

Here is the usual ladder:

1. Mid-September: first-up runs over a mile or so, such as the Makybe Diva Stakes.
2. Late September and early October: the second- or third-up step, such as the Turnbull Stakes over 2000m.
3. Mid to late October: the Caulfield Cup (2400m, October 17) and the Cox Plate (2040m, October 24, at Flemington).
4. Early November: the Melbourne Cup over 3200m on November 3.

Two different paths

Trainers pick one route. Sir Delius' camp points to the Cox Plate, which is 2040m, just 40m longer than the Turnbull. Half Yours' camp is weighing the Cox Plate against the Caulfield Cup, with the Turnbull as the deciding run.

Half Yours: a run that will help decide his target

Last year's Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup winner Half Yours (Tony McEvoy) is in the mix. According to the VRC, McEvoy calls the race a fork in the road: if Half Yours matches the top Cox Plate contenders, he goes to the Cox Plate. If not, the Caulfield Cup (2400m, A$6 million) is the alternative, where he has been allotted 57.5kg.

He ran fourth in last year's Turnbull, then won both Cups. That shows a modest Turnbull run does not rule out a big spring, which is why the result is read for clues, not verdicts.

Ciaron Maher's five

According to Just Horse Racing, Ciaron Maher has five runners: Zahrann, Light Infantry Man, Middle Earth, Saint George and Kings Valley. Zahrann won the Naturalism Stakes at Caulfield on September 19, which earned a ballot exemption into the Caulfield Cup on October 17.

Maher said the Turnbull was the path set out for Zahrann. He is following the template Half Yours used last year. Saint George and Kings Valley also ran in that Caulfield race, and Light Infantry Man is expected to benefit from the step up in distance.

Weight-for-age and second-up explained

Weight-for-age is a scale of set weights based on the age and sex of a horse and the distance of the race. It exists so that younger horses, fillies and mares get a fair go against older, stronger rivals. Unlike a handicap, it does not rate horses on ability, so a champion can carry the most.

Second-up means a horse's second run of a new preparation after a spell. Trainers often say a horse "needs the run" first-up and improves second-up or third-up as fitness comes. That is why Half Yours' run, his second start of the campaign after the Makybe Diva Stakes, is read in that light.

What to watch on Saturday

• Barriers and tempo: the rail draw for Zahrann and the wide draw for Sir Delius affect how each horse can settle.
• Fitness signs: a horse that finishes strongly is likely to improve with more runs.
• Cox Plate hints: connections' comments after the race show which horses head to the Cox Plate, which is at Flemington this year while Moonee Valley is rebuilt.
• Half Yours' target: the post-race plan will be the story.
• Track condition: a change in the track rating can change who is suited.
