Japan Cup 2026 Schedule: Date and What Time

Update (2026-11-02): The Japan Cup 2026 is on Sunday, November 29, 2026, at Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu, Japan, with post time at 15:40 local time (scheduled; JRA can change it). On the US East Coast (New York, Miami) that is Sunday, November 29, 1:40 a.m., so fans in the Americas watch it live overnight.

Here is the scheduled time where you are. If the JRA moves it, we will update this table.

The race is a Group 1 over 2,400 meters (about 1½ miles) on turf, for horses aged 3 and up, with a maximum field of 18.

How to watch the Japan Cup 2026

The TV and streaming plan for 2026 has not been announced. Here is what happened in earlier years, so you know where to look:

• United States: FanDuel TV carried the race live in 2025.
• UK and Ireland: Racing TV first showed the Japan Cup live in 2023.
• Everywhere else: check the JRA's official channels, including its YouTube channel and its English-language accounts on X, for streams and replays.

Broadcast deals change from year to year, so confirm your local listing in race week.

Going to Tokyo Racecourse

If you plan to be there, buy ahead. The JRA says no general-admission or reserved-seat tickets will be sold at the racecourse on Japan Cup day, so everything goes through its online booking.

According to local press, admission is ¥1,000 and online only. Going by the JRA's usual schedule, the ticket lottery would run from November 22 to November 24 with results on November 25, but the JRA had not confirmed Japan Cup dates as of late October. Under-15s get in free, and baseball great Ichiro is set to present the trophy.

The Field So Far: Probable Runners, Not a Final Field

The real field takes shape only at declarations on November 26. For now these are the horses whose connections have said Tokyo is the plan.

• Calandagan (France, Francis-Henri Graffard): the 2025 winner, now 5. He finished second to Ombudsman in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on October 17, and Japanese press reported he is still going to the Japan Cup as planned. A win would make him the first overseas horse to win it twice.
• Meisho Tabaru (Japan, Mamoru Ishibashi): the 5-year-old won the 2025 Takarazuka Kinen with Yutaka Take and finished 14th in this year's Arc. His trainer said on October 27 that, depending on how he looks, he will go back into training for the Japan Cup at the owner's wish. His Tokyo rider has not been announced.

Other names are nominated but have not been confirmed as runners.

The October 15 overseas nomination list

The Japan Racing Association (JRA) published its first list of 22 overseas nominations on October 15, led by Calandagan. It covers horses trained in five countries. The names most fans will recognize:

• Kalpana (Britain, Andrew Balding): the 5-year-old mare who beat Calandagan in this year's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
• Diamond Necklace, Minnie Hauk and Lambourn (Ireland, Aidan O'Brien): part of five O'Brien nominations, along with Benvenuto Cellini and Jan Brughel.
• Hotazhell (Ireland, Jessica Harrington): Racing Post reported that his Breeders' Cup run on October 31 would be his final race before stud, so don't expect him in Tokyo.
• Goliath (France, Graffard), a stablemate of Calandagan.
• Atitlan (USA, Richard Mandella), who was aimed at the Breeders' Cup Turf, and Far Bridge (USA, Miguel Clement).
• Sir Delius (Australia, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott) and Aeliana (Australia, Chris Waller).

The rest of the list: Almaqam, Survie, Wine Dark Sea, Ethical Diamond, Johanna Walsh, Purview, Teao, Birdman and Treasure the Moment.

Nominated does not mean running

Nominating a horse is free, and owners do it to keep the door open, not to commit. Many of these horses had bigger or closer targets first, and the Australian-based nominees are in the middle of their home spring season. Expect the list to shrink a lot before race day.

How the Japan Cup Works: Nominations, Arrival and Declarations

The Japan Cup is an invitational race. Overseas horses run only if the JRA invites them and their connections accept, and Japanese-trained horses fill out the rest of the field of up to 18.

The 2026 timeline

Weights and money

It is a weight-for-age race. Males aged 4 and up carry 58 kg and fillies and mares of that age 56 kg, while 3-year-olds carry 2 kg less. If those terms are new to you, our glossary has the basics.

The purse is ¥1.09 billion, with ¥500 million to the winner. For 2026 the JRA raised its overseas bonus to a record US$5 million for a horse that won a top-tier race in 2025 or 2026, such as the Arc, King George, Champion Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes or Breeders' Cup Turf, and then wins the Japan Cup.

Horses that finished second or third in those races can earn US$2 million for a Japan Cup win. Every invited overseas starter gets at least US$100,000 just for running.

Why Overseas Horses Rarely Win in Tokyo

The Japan Cup was created in 1981 to bring the world's best to Japan, and in the early years visitors won most of the time. Then the home side caught up. Before Calandagan in 2025, no overseas horse had won since Alkaased in 2005, a 20-year drought.

Overseas-trained horses won 12 of the first 17 runnings (1981-1997) but only 2 of the next 20 (1998-2017). Here's why it is so hard.

Fast, firm ground

Tokyo's turf is usually quick and firm in late November. Calandagan's winning time of 2:20.3 broke the 2,400 m record set by Japanese superstar Almond Eye in 2018.

Many European horses are used to softer, slower ground and races that build up gradually. In Tokyo they often face a strong pace and a long final straight where raw speed decides it.

Quarantine and travel

Shipping a horse halfway around the world is hard on the body and the routine. Overseas runners fly in and complete import quarantine before they race.

For Tokyo races, the JRA's International Stable at the racecourse lets horses go straight from the airport into quarantine and stay until race day. It holds only 12 horses, and visitors can use the turf training course only after their quarantine period ends.

Race-day habits are different, too. Before the 2025 race, Graffard noted it would be about an hour and 40 minutes from Calandagan's stall to the start, including a long walk in front of the stands. He called that a disadvantage for European horses.

Deep home-trained fields

Japan breeds and trains some of the best middle-distance turf horses in the world. A Japan Cup field is usually packed with Group 1 winners who know the track and the ground.

Where the Japan Cup Fits on the International Calendar

The Japan Cup is the last big stop of the international turf season for many top middle-distance horses. Most of the autumn's other big races are now done:

1. Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (early October, Paris): Europe's championship, where Meisho Tabaru finished 14th. Read our Arc 2026 result.
2. British Champions Day (October 17, Ascot): Ombudsman beat Calandagan in the Champion Stakes.
3. Breeders' Cup (October 30-31, Keeneland): the Turf at 1½ miles was the American target.
4. Japan Cup (November 29, Tokyo): four weeks after the Breeders' Cup.

Running at Ascot or Keeneland and then flying to Tokyo is a big ask, which is why the nomination list always looks stronger than the final field.

What to Watch Next
