Breeders' Cup Turf 2026: What Just Happened

The Breeders' Cup Turf 2026 is a $5 million, 1½-mile race on grass at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, run on Saturday, Oct. 31, the second day of the Oct. 30-31 World Championships. After last weekend, the leading West Coast name is Atitlan, and the biggest East Coast prep has been pushed back by a storm.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, Atitlan won the Grade 2, $200,000 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita by 2¼ lengths. Flashiest was second and Mondego third. He ran the 1¼ miles in 1:58.35.

The same weekend, a nor'easter shut down Belmont Park. NYRA cancelled live racing on Sept. 26 and 27 because of a wind advisory calling for gusts over 50 mph, and moved six graded stakes, including the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, to Thursday, Oct. 1.

Atitlan Horse: Comeback Story and Question Marks

Atitlan is a 5-year-old son of The Factor. He made his first 12 starts for trainer John Shirreffs, who died in February 2026 at age 80, and then moved to Hall of Famer Richard Mandella. Mandella gave Shirreffs the credit, saying he laid the groundwork and Mandella just got to polish the apple.

Here's how his comeback has gone so far:

• The layoff: about 10½ months off before returning this summer. That's close to a year of no racing.
• Aug. 29, Del Mar Handicap (G2), 1⅜ miles: he closed late and lost by a neck to Test Score.
• Sept. 26, John Henry (G2), 1¼ miles: in his third start for Mandella, he settled off the pace under Umberto Rispoli, rallied on the final turn and pulled clear in the stretch. Rispoli said that once they hit the final turn, the horse was carrying him forward.

He's now 15 starts, 5 wins, 1 second and 4 thirds, with $648,000 earned. His wins include the 2025 Charles Whittingham Stakes (G2), also at 1¼ miles on turf.

What still has to be answered

• Distance. The Breeders' Cup Turf is 1½ miles, a furlong (1/8 mile) longer than the Del Mar Handicap and two furlongs longer than the John Henry.
• Class. His best 2026 runs, the Del Mar near-miss and the John Henry win, both came at Grade 2 level. The Turf is a Grade 1 that usually draws Europe's best.
• Qualifying. We found no 2026 source that lists the John Henry as a Win and You're In race, so don't assume it gave him an automatic spot.

What Is a 'Win and You're In' Race?

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is a set of races around the world whose winners get an automatic, fee-paid starting spot in a matching Breeders' Cup race. The 2026 series runs in 14 countries, and Breeders' Cup set aside a record $6.5 million in free entry fees. Winners based outside North America also get a $40,000 travel allowance.

Horses without a WAYI win can still run. They must be eligible (nominated) and pre-entered. If too many horses want in, WAYI winners go first, and the rest are ranked by graded-stakes results and a panel's judgment.

So a WAYI win isn't the only road to Keeneland. It is the surest one, and it saves the owner a big bill.

Win and You're In races for the Turf in 2026

• Christophe Clement Stakes (G1), Saratoga, Aug. 15: formerly the Sword Dancer. Won by the Irish-bred mare Survie, trained in England by George Boughey, who now has her automatic berth.
• Del Mar Handicap (G2), Del Mar, Aug. 29: won by Test Score (Graham Motion) by a neck over Atitlan, which earned Test Score a fees-paid Turf spot.
• Kentucky Turf Cup (G2), Kentucky Downs, Sept. 5: won by the European mare Tiffany, trained by Sir Mark Prescott, who beat 2025 Turf winner Ethical Diamond and earned an automatic berth.
• Dubai Sheema Classic (UAE), Meydan, March 28: won by Calandagan (Francis-Henri Graffard), who holds a fees-paid Turf spot.
• Takarazuka Kinen (Japan), June 14: won by Meisho Tabaru.
• Prince of Wales's Stakes (England), June 17
• King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (England), July 25
• Irish Champion Stakes (Ireland), Sept. 12
• Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (France), Oct. 4 (still to come)
• Champion Stakes (England), Oct. 17 (still to come)
• Plus two South American qualifiers: the Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini (Argentina, run in December 2025) and the Gran Premio Club Hípico Falabella (Chile).

Important: the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic is not a 2026 WAYI race for the Turf. NYRA's Oct. 1 card flags the Flower Bowl (Filly & Mare Turf) and the Vosburgh (Sprint) as WAYI races, but not the Joe Hirsch. It is still a Grade 1 at the exact Breeders' Cup distance, so it matters.

Joe Hirsch Turf Classic 2026: The Storm-Delayed Prep

The 50th Joe Hirsch is a $500,000, 1½-mile Grade 1 for horses 3 and up on the Belmont Park turf. Its rescheduled Thursday card has six graded stakes worth a combined $1.9 million.

NYRA's Oct. 1 field (scratches can still happen):

• El Cordobes (Charlie Appleby, for Godolphin): won the 2025 Sword Dancer and was third in the 2025 Breeders' Cup Turf and in last year's Joe Hirsch. He hasn't raced since February.
• Far Bridge (Miguel Clement): won this race in 2024, when it was run at Aqueduct.
• Program Trading and Asbury Park (both Chad Brown).
• Pride of Arras (Ralph Beckett) and Fort George (Ed Walker): two more European shippers.
• Minaret Station (Will Walden).

Belmont nor'easter postponed stakes: the new calendar

• Wed., Sept. 30: Belmont returns with the overnight races from the lost weekend.
• Thu., Oct. 1: Joe Hirsch, Flower Bowl, Vosburgh, Gallant Bloom, Belmont Turf Sprint and Winter Memories.
• October: Belmont races Wednesday through Sunday all month.
• Sat., Oct. 3: Delaware Park runs its whole postponed Delaware Handicap card.

How Europe and Japan Fit In

Europe has owned this race lately. The last six winners, from 2020 to 2025, were all trained in Britain or Ireland: Tarnawa, Yibir, Rebel's Romance (twice), Auguste Rodin and Ethical Diamond.

Keeneland has hosted the Turf three times before, in 2015, 2020 and 2022, and European-trained horses won all three: Found, Tarnawa and Rebel's Romance. European horses often arrive fresh from a softer-ground season, and 1½ miles suits their stamina-first style.

A fan's checklist for the next five weeks

1. Watch the Joe Hirsch replay. It's the last big 1½-mile turf test in the U.S., and a win by a shipper like El Cordobes would put him right back in the Turf picture.
2. Track who ships from Europe. Arc and Champion Stakes winners get free spots, but connections don't always use them.
3. Check workouts. For a horse like Atitlan, steady Keeneland-bound works matter more than headlines.
4. Look at the ground. Keeneland in late October can be firm or soft, which can flip the order.
5. Watch the pre-entries. The pre-entry list comes out in the days before the race and tells you who's really coming.
