Update (Nov. 1, 2026): Sovereignty won the $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland, with Junior Alvarado riding for trainer Bill Mott. The Puma (Javier Castellano, trained by Gustavo Delgado) was second, and Knightsbridge (Luis Saez, also trained by Mott) was third. They started from posts 2, 4 and 7.

Seven horses ran after Magnitude (post 6) was scratched. Eight contenders were entered and drawn on Monday, Oct. 26, and defending champion Forever Young was the 2-1 morning-line favorite from post 5.

It was 1¼ miles on a fast dirt track, Race 12 and the last race of the weekend. Three-year-olds carried 122 pounds and older horses 126. The eight entered came from 11 Classic pre-entries, according to Horse Racing Nation.

The morning line was the official Breeders' Cup line, made by linemaker David Aragona, per Horse Racing Nation. It's a forecast of how the public will bet, not a prediction.

The Classic field: post, horse, trainer, jockey and odds

Horse by horse

1. T O Password (JPN), 30-1. A 5-year-old horse trained in Japan by Daisuke Takayanagi, ridden by Kazushi Kimura. His team had listed the Dirt Mile as his first choice at pre-entry, and he ended up on the rail in the Classic.

2. Sovereignty, 5-2: winner. The 4-year-old colt won the 2025 Kentucky Derby and was 2025 Horse of the Year. Bill Mott trains him for Godolphin, and Junior Alvarado rode him. A hoof abscess kept him out of the Jockey Club Gold Cup in September. His story is in Sovereignty: the Horse of the Year's last race.

3. Golden Tempo, 5-1. The 2026 Kentucky Derby winner, a 3-year-old colt trained by Cherie DeVaux for Phipps Stable and St. Elias Stables, with Jose Ortiz aboard. As a 3-year-old he carried 4 pounds less than the older horses.

4. The Puma, 10-1: second. A 3-year-old colt trained by Gustavo Delgado and ridden by Javier Castellano, owned by a partnership that includes OGMA Investments.

5. Forever Young (JPN), 2-1. The 5-year-old won last year's Classic, the first horse from Japan to do it, and the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Sept. 18. Yoshito Yahagi trains him and Ryusei Sakai was named to ride. A second Classic would have made him only the second two-time winner, after Tiznow in 2000 and 2001. More in Who Is Forever Young?.

6. Magnitude, scratched. A 4-year-old colt trained by Steve Asmussen for Winchell Thoroughbreds. He earned his Classic ticket by winning the Dubai World Cup in March, but he didn't run. His story is in Who is Magnitude?.

7. Knightsbridge, 9-2: third. Sovereignty's 5-year-old stablemate, also trained by Mott for Godolphin. He won the Pacific Classic at Del Mar and was pre-entered in both the Classic and the Dirt Mile before his team chose the Classic. Luis Saez rode him.

8. Napoleon Solo, 15-1. The 3-year-old Preakness winner, second in the Travers, trained by Chad Summers with John Velazquez riding. He too was pre-entered in the Dirt Mile and went to the Classic.

Who wasn't in the Classic

Several names from our earlier contender list went elsewhere or didn't enter:

• Forged Steel, who earned an automatic spot by winning the Goodwood, was entered in the Dirt Mile instead (post 9, 15-1).
• Further Ado went to the Dirt Mile too, as the 2-1 favorite from post 1, with Flavien Prat replacing the injured Irad Ortiz Jr. See who took over Irad's horses.
• Dragoon Guard, the Lukas Classic winner, wasn't entered.
• Skippylongstocking and Costa Nova, who also won Classic qualifiers this year, weren't in the field.

A ticket is an invitation, not an obligation, so it's normal for some qualifiers to skip the race or pick another one.

How the Classic field came together

The Classic takes up to 14 starters, plus up to four also-eligibles. This year only eight entered, so nobody was left out and there were no also-eligibles. Seven ran after Magnitude's scratch.

The 11 'Win and You're In' races

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series gives winners of designated races a fees-paid spot, plus a $40,000 travel allowance for horses based outside North America. These were the 11 Classic qualifiers for 2026:

Nominations, points and the panel

Every starter must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program, and most horses are nominated as weanlings. A horse that wasn't can still be supplemented, but it costs $100,000 or $200,000 depending on whether its sire was nominated.

When more than 14 horses pre-enter, Challenge winners go first, then horses with enough graded stakes points (at least 8 from U.S. or Canadian races), and a panel of racing officials orders the rest. With eight entries, none of that was needed this year.

What makes a Classic horse

The Classic is 1¼ miles, one furlong longer than nine-furlong preps like the Goodwood. That extra eighth of a mile is where plenty of good horses run out of steam.

• Speed and stamina together. Classic winners usually hold a good position early and still have something left in the final furlong.
• Older horses against 3-year-olds. This year's field had three 3-year-olds (Golden Tempo, The Puma and Napoleon Solo) and four older horses after Magnitude's scratch. The 4-pound weight break helps the younger group.
• Proven class. Nearly every serious contender has won or placed at the top level. If the grades confuse you, read What Is a Grade 1 Race?.
