What 'Win and You're In' means for the Breeders' Cup

In a win and you're in Breeders' Cup race, the winner earns an automatic berth, with entry fees paid, into a matching race at the Breeders' Cup World Championships. It's the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, and the 2026 edition is its 20th year.

This fall the championships run Oct. 30-31 at Keeneland, so the next few weekends are full of races that work as a fast lane to Lexington.

This weekend's races (Oct. 2-4)

Keeneland is marking the 25th anniversary of Fall Stars Weekend, and Belmont Park has a big card of its own on Saturday. Here are the Challenge races the tracks list.

Belmont's G1 Frizette is also on the Oct. 3 card, but it isn't a Win and You're In race. NYRA lists it as a Breeders' Cup "Dirt Dozen" race: the top three earn entry credits toward the Juvenile Fillies, not an automatic berth.

The Turf Mile drew a nine-horse field and the Spinster a five-horse field, according to Keeneland's entries. Both are still to be run, so nothing here is a result.

What an automatic berth actually includes

A berth is a guaranteed starting spot. Breeders' Cup has set aside a record $6.5 million in free entry fees for the 2026 Challenge Series, which spans 95 races in 14 countries.

There is also travel help, according to the April 2026 announcement:

• $10,000 for North American starters based outside Kentucky
• $40,000 for starters based outside North America

One catch: a winner that isn't already nominated to the Breeders' Cup program must be nominated by the pre-entry deadline of Oct. 19 to receive the rewards.

A win doesn't force a horse to run

A berth is an offer. The connections (the owner and trainer) can take it, run in a different Breeders' Cup race, choose another race elsewhere, or rest the horse.

That's healthy, not a snub. A horse may be tired, may prefer a different surface or distance, or may simply be better off with a break. Fans should read "earned a berth" as "is eligible," not "is going."

The tracks only report the berth. Plans for any individual horse are the owner's and trainer's to announce, so this guide doesn't guess.

How to read the race names and grades

A typical name has three parts. Take the Coolmore Turf Mile (G1):

1. Coolmore is the sponsor. It can change from year to year.
2. Turf Mile tells you the surface (grass) and the distance (one mile).
3. G1 is the grade, the top rung of North American racing.

Grades run from Grade 1 (highest) to Grade 3. They reflect the quality of a race's fields over time, and they don't say who is favored. For the full picture, see what a Grade 1 race is.

Names also hint at the horse's age and sex:

• Fillies and Distaff mean females. The Spinster is for fillies and mares aged three and up.
• Sprint means a shorter race, usually under a mile.

How the Challenge Series is organized

Each Challenge race is linked to one Breeders' Cup race. Some races feed the same target: on Saturday, both the Champagne and the Breeders' Futurity offer a Juvenile berth, as tracks report.

The series began in 2007 and now spans 95 races in 14 countries. Eight qualifying races take place at Keeneland itself.
