Breeders' Cup Distaff 2026: Nitrogen Aces Her Final Prep

The Breeders' Cup Distaff 2026 runs Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, with post time scheduled for 4:58 p.m. ET. The horse everyone is talking about is champion Nitrogen, who won Belmont Park's Grade 2 Beldame Stakes on Sept. 25 in her last race before the big day.

Nitrogen went straight to the lead under jockey Jose Ortiz and never gave it up. She beat Donor Advised by 2¾ lengths and ran 1⅛ miles in 1:48.36, with Boutwell Time another 13½ lengths back in third.

"This is what we were hoping for," trainer Mark Casse told America's Best Racing. Casse added that the Breeders' Cup had been the goal from the beginning. No shipping date is set yet: her owner told Thoroughbred Daily News his guess was that she'd train at Belmont for a couple of weeks before heading to Keeneland, and Casse told the NYRA press office she would probably get there in about 10 days.

What Is the Breeders' Cup Distaff?

The Distaff is the championship race for female Thoroughbreds on dirt. In racing, a filly is a female horse 4 or younger, and a mare is 5 or older.

It's a weight-for-age race, so younger fillies get a small weight break against older mares. A win here often decides the year's championship for older fillies and mares.

A quick history

• 1984: the first Distaff, run at 1¼ miles. It has been 1⅛ miles since 1988.
• 1988: Personal Ensign won it to retire unbeaten, and a Grade 1 at Saratoga now carries her name.
• 2008-2012: the race was briefly called the Ladies' Classic. Zenyatta won the 2008 edition.
• Two-time winners: Bayakoa (1989, 1990), Royal Delta (2011, 2012), Beholder (2013, 2016) and Monomoy Girl (2018, 2020).
• 2025: Scylla led all the way at Del Mar and beat Nitrogen by 5½ lengths. That was trainer Bill Mott's sixth Distaff, the most of any trainer.

Why "Distaff"? A distaff was the stick that held wool for spinning, and "the distaff side" came to mean the female side of a family. Racing borrowed the word for races for females. Find more racing terms in our glossary.

Who Is Nitrogen?

Nitrogen is a bay filly foaled in 2022, by Medaglia d'Oro out of Tiffany Case. D. J. Stable bred and owns her, and Hall of Famer Mark Casse trains her.

Her résumé so far:

• 2024: Canadian champion 2-year-old filly.
• 2025: U.S. champion 3-year-old filly. She won the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga and finished second in the Distaff.
• April 11, 2026: second to Claret Beret in the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn.
• June 5: won the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at Saratoga by 12¾ lengths, which earned her a guaranteed Distaff spot.
• Aug. 8: second to 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty in the Grade 1 Whitney, against males.
• Sept. 25: won the Beldame.

That puts her at 18 starts, 9 wins, 6 seconds and 3 thirds, with $3,068,354 in earnings. She's the rare filly who races against the boys and holds her own, and she has been in the top three in every start.

TDN reported that she led through early fractions of :23.89 and :46.51 and was never seriously threatened. Her team had also considered other options, including the Jockey Club Gold Cup against males, before choosing the Beldame.

How Breeders' Cup Qualifying Works

Every Breeders' Cup starter must meet three basic rules:

1. Be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the pre-entry deadline.
2. Have made at least one official start between Jan. 1, 2026, and the pre-entry deadline of Monday, Oct. 19.
3. Be 9 or younger at that point.

From there, two programs help horses get in.

Win and You're In (the Challenge Series)

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is 95 qualifying races in 14 countries, 50 of them in North America. Win one, and you get an automatic spot in the matching Breeders' Cup race.

• Entry fees paid: the Breeders' Cup covers the pre-entry and entry fees. It set aside a record $6.5 million in free fees for 2026.
• Travel help: $10,000 for North American starters based outside Kentucky and $40,000 for horses based outside North America.
• 2026 Distaff qualifiers: they include the Apple Blossom (new to the series this year), Ogden Phipps, Clement L. Hirsch, Personal Ensign, Zenyatta and Spinster.

The Dirt Dozen

The Dirt Dozen is a bonus layer on top. It covers 12 North American dirt races, two for each dirt division except the Classic, and the Beldame is one of the Distaff's two.

• Credits belong to the horse, not the owner or trainer, and can't be transferred.
• They only count in the year they're earned.
• The catch: a horse that wins both a Challenge race and a Dirt Dozen race gets only the Challenge benefits.

That last rule explains Nitrogen's Beldame. She already had a fees-paid spot from the Ogden Phipps, so the Beldame was about fitness, not a ticket. Donor Advised and Boutwell Time, second and third, picked up credits if they're nominated.

What a berth does and doesn't mean

A fees-paid spot is an invitation, not an obligation. Owners can skip the race or pick a different one, and horses without a berth can still pre-enter. The field isn't set until entries are drawn during Breeders' Cup week.

Breeders' Cup Distaff 2026 Contenders So Far

These horses have earned automatic, fees-paid Distaff spots, as reported by major racing outlets. Only Nitrogen's team has publicly named the Distaff as her next race in the reports we checked, so treat the others as qualified, not confirmed.

• Nitrogen: qualified through the Ogden Phipps (June 5) and won the Beldame. Casse said the Breeders' Cup was her goal from the start, and she's expected to move to Keeneland soon, though no date has been set.
• Claret Beret: a 5-year-old mare by Not This Time, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. She beat Nitrogen by 4½ lengths in the April 11 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn.
• Eunomia: by Tiz the Law, also trained by Joseph. She won the Clement L. Hirsch at Del Mar on Aug. 1 by a half-length over Om N Joy.
• Fully Subscribed: a 4-year-old filly by Tiz the Law, trained by Chad Brown for Klaravich Stables. She won the Aug. 29 Personal Ensign at Saratoga by 9¾ lengths, and Brown mentioned the Oct. 4 Spinster as a possible next start.

One fun detail: Saffie Joseph Jr. has two Distaff qualifiers, and jockey Micah Husbands rode both of them in their qualifying wins.

What to Watch Next Before Oct. 31

• Sept. 27, Zenyatta Stakes (Grade 2), Santa Anita: a Win and You're In race at 1 1/16 miles. The field includes Super Corredora, the 2025 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner, back after nearly seven months off.
• Oct. 4, Juddmonte Spinster (Grade 1), Keeneland: another Win and You're In race for the Distaff, run at the same track and distance as the Distaff itself.
• Early October: Nitrogen is expected to move to Keeneland. No date is set, but Casse estimated about 10 days after the Beldame.
• Oct. 19: Breeders' Cup pre-entry deadline.
• Oct. 21: the Breeders' Cup is due to confirm final race order and post times.
• Breeders' Cup week: entries are drawn and post positions assigned.
• Oct. 31, 4:58 p.m. ET: the Distaff.

A new fan's checklist

2. Follow the workouts. Steady, published morning works are the best sign a horse is on track.
3. Check the draw. Post position matters, especially for a front-runner like Nitrogen.
4. Watch the track condition. "Fast" means dry; "sloppy" or "muddy" can change how horses run.
5. Remember the Classic. It goes off at 6:16 p.m. ET, with defending champion Forever Young in the picture.
