Sovereignty Racehorse: The 2025 Horse of the Year's Last Race

The Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner breezed a half-mile in :48.20 on Sunday, six days before the Breeders' Cup Classic. Here's who he is, what slowed him down and why Oct. 31 is likely goodbye.

On Sunday, Oct. 25, Sovereignty had his final breeze at Keeneland for the Oct. 31 Breeders' Cup Classic, which is likely his last race before he goes to stud at Darley in 2027.

TL;DR

  • Sovereignty is a 4-year-old Godolphin homebred by Into Mischief, trained by Bill Mott, with 7 wins from 12 starts and about $6.88 million in earnings.
  • In 2025 he won the Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy and Travers and was voted Horse of the Year, but a fever kept him out of that year's Classic.
  • His final work, a half-mile in :48.20 at Keeneland on Oct. 25, drew high praise from Mott's camp; he has trained in a bar shoe on his left hind since a hoof abscess in September.
  • He joins Darley America's stallion roster in 2027, so the Oct. 31 Classic is likely his last race and his first meeting with defending champion Forever Young.
  • Post positions are drawn Monday, Oct. 26, at 5 p.m. EDT.

Who Is Sovereignty? The Racehorse in a Nutshell

Sovereignty is a 4-year-old Thoroughbred colt owned and bred by Godolphin, trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, and the reigning U.S. Horse of the Year. The Sovereignty racehorse won the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers, and on Saturday, Oct. 31, he's set to run in the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland in what is very likely the last race of his career.

On Sunday morning, Oct. 25, he had his final major work for that race. Keeneland's clockers caught him going a half-mile in :48.20, and his camp couldn't have been happier.

The Final Work: Sunday Morning at Keeneland

Sovereignty breezed four furlongs (a half-mile) in company with Godolphin's Thunder Roll, a horse brought to Keeneland just for this work. He started a few lengths behind his workmate, drew even at the top of the stretch and pulled clear as they galloped out past the finish.

His rider was assistant trainer Neil Poznansky, who has been aboard for nearly every breeze of his career. According to BloodHorse, Mott said the work couldn't have gone any better, and that Poznansky told him the colt hadn't worked this well in a long, long time.

  • How many works: it was his fifth breeze since the hoof abscess and his seventh since his Aug. 8 Whitney win.
  • The earlier question mark: on Oct. 11 he went five furlongs in a slow-looking 1:04.01 on Saratoga's Oklahoma training track. Mott said that track hadn't been watered that day and estimated the work was worth about 1:02 on a normal surface.
  • Mott's verdict: he said he was happy and wouldn't have changed anything or added another work.

Sovereignty Racehorse Career: From Street Sense to Horse of the Year

Sovereignty was foaled at Godolphin's Gainsborough Farm in Woodford County, Kentucky. His sire, Into Mischief, is one of America's leading stallions, and his dam, Crowned, is a daughter of Bernardini out of the Grade 1 winner Mushka.

At 2: a late bloomer

He was fourth and then second in two maiden races in 2024, then broke through in style in the Grade 3 Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs in October, closing from the back to win by five lengths.

At 3: the classic season

DateRace (track)Finish

Mar. 29, 2025Florida Derby, G1 (Gulfstream)2nd to Tappan Street
May 3, 2025Kentucky Derby, G1 (Churchill Downs)1st
June 7, 2025Belmont Stakes, G1 (Saratoga)1st
July 26, 2025Jim Dandy, G2 (Saratoga)1st
Aug. 23, 2025Travers, G1 (Saratoga)1st

That run made him only the fifth horse to win the Derby, Belmont and Travers, and the first in 30 years to do it. He skipped the Preakness, which is why there was no Triple Crown attempt. In January 2026 he was voted Horse of the Year with 201 of 220 first-place votes, and Mott and Godolphin won Eclipse Awards as top trainer, owner and breeder.

The fever that cost him the 2025 Classic

Sovereignty was set to be the star of the 2025 Classic at Del Mar. On Oct. 27, 2025, he ran a fever, and it came back the next day. Blood work pointed to a viral infection, and on Oct. 29 Mott scratched him, saying the colt would not run unless he was 100%.

Instead of retiring him that winter, Godolphin kept him in training for a 4-year-old season.

2026: The Comeback, the Whitney and a Hoof Abscess

His 4-year-old season started quietly. He was second to White Abarrio in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap in April, then third to Magnitude in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs in June.

Then he returned to Saratoga, where he had won his last three races of 2025. On Aug. 8 he won the Grade 1 Whitney by 4¾ lengths over Nitrogen. The Whitney is a Breeders' Cup 'Win and You're In' race, so it also locked in his Classic spot with fees paid.

The abscess and the bar shoe

In September an abscess in his left hind hoof cost him more than a week of training and his planned final prep, the Sept. 18 Jockey Club Gold Cup. A hoof abscess is a pocket of infection trapped inside the hoof. It's one of the most common causes of sudden lameness in any horse, and most horses recover well once it drains.

Since then he has trained in a bar shoe on that foot. A bar shoe has a piece of metal joining the two heels, which adds support and protects a sore area. Mott plans to switch to a regular shoe the day before or the day of the race and says he isn't concerned about it at all.

Sovereignty vs. Forever Young: The Meeting That Never Happened

The Classic would be the first time Sovereignty and Japan's Forever Young have raced each other. The fever kept them apart in 2025, and the abscess kept them apart again at the Gold Cup, which Forever Young won.

  • Forever Young is the defending Classic champion and is trying to become only the second horse, after Tiznow in 2000 and 2001, to win it twice.
  • Sovereignty has never run outside the United States, but Keeneland is in his home state, and he arrives off a steady run of works since the abscess.
  • The 10-furlong trip suits both. Each has won Grade 1 races at the Classic's 1¼ miles.

They aren't the only contenders. See our Breeders' Cup Classic 2026 contenders guide for the whole picture, including Sovereignty's stablemate Knightsbridge.

Retirement: Why the Classic Is Likely His Last Race

On Oct. 14, Darley America announced that Sovereignty and Knightsbridge will join its stallion roster in 2027 at Jonabell Farm near Lexington. Their stud fees will be set after the Breeders' Cup.

That timing matters. A Classic win would add one more top-level result for breeders to weigh, and Keeneland sits in the same Lexington area as the farm where he'll stand.

Nothing is official until he enters the starting gate. As of Sunday, Godolphin was still deciding whether Knightsbridge runs in the Classic or the $1 million Dirt Mile, with that call due Monday morning.

How to Read His Final Work

Workout times look precise, but they make more sense with context. Our full explainer on how to read horse racing workouts goes deeper; here's how to apply it to Sunday.

  1. Distance and time. Four furlongs in :48.20 is solid for a big dirt horse a week out. Trainers rarely want a 'bullet' (fastest of the day) before a 10-furlong race.
  2. Who clocked it. Keeneland's official clockers had :48 1/5. Daily Racing Form clocker Mike Welsch had him in :48.37, galloping out strongly. Small differences between clockers are normal.
  3. The gallop-out. How a horse keeps going after the wire shows fitness better than the time alone. Pulling clear of his workmate was the detail his camp liked.
  4. The pattern. Seven breezes since Aug. 8, five of them since the abscess, show a steady build-up toward the race.
  5. The surface. A dry or deep track, like Saratoga's on Oct. 11, can make a good work look slow.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the racehorse Sovereignty?

Sovereignty is a 4-year-old Thoroughbred owned and bred by Godolphin and trained by Bill Mott. He won the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes, Jim Dandy and Travers, was voted 2025 Horse of the Year and won the 2026 Whitney.

Why did Sovereignty miss the 2025 Breeders' Cup Classic?

He ran a fever on Oct. 27, 2025, and it returned the next day. Blood work pointed to a viral infection, and Bill Mott scratched him on Oct. 29, days before the race at Del Mar.

Why does Sovereignty wear a bar shoe?

After an abscess in his left hind hoof in September, he has trained in a bar shoe on that foot for extra protection. Mott plans to switch to a regular shoe the day before or the day of the Classic and says he isn't concerned.

Is the Breeders' Cup Classic Sovereignty's last race?

Very likely. Darley America announced on Oct. 14 that he will stand at stud at Jonabell Farm in Kentucky starting in 2027, with his fee to be set after the Breeders' Cup.

Have Sovereignty and Forever Young ever raced each other?

No. Sovereignty's fever kept him out of the 2025 Classic and his hoof abscess kept him out of the 2026 Jockey Club Gold Cup. If both start on Oct. 31, it will be their first meeting.

When is the Breeders' Cup Classic draw?

Post positions are drawn Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, at 5 p.m. EDT in the Keeneland Sales Pavilion. The Classic itself is Saturday, Oct. 31.
