Who Is The Puma? The Colt Who Chased Sovereignty in the Classic

Scratched on Kentucky Derby morning, he came back to win a Grade 1 at Parx and finish second at 17-1 in the richest race of the Breeders' Cup.

The Puma finished second in the Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 31 at 17-1, and fans who last heard of him on Derby morning want to know who he is.

TL;DR

  • The Puma, a 3-year-old chestnut colt, ran second to Sovereignty by 1¾ lengths in the seven-horse Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31.
  • He was scratched on Kentucky Derby morning with leg swelling, then won the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby over Further Ado on Sept. 19.
  • Gustavo Delgado trains him and Javier Castellano rides him, the same team that won the 2023 Kentucky Derby with Mage.
  • He cost $150,000 as a 2-year-old and now has two wins from eight starts.
  • Sovereignty and Knightsbridge go to stud in 2027. No source we found gives The Puma a stud move, and his trainer said in September that the Saudi Cup is in the plans only if the colt stays sound.

Who is The Puma racehorse?

The Puma racehorse is a 3-year-old chestnut colt who finished second to Sovereignty in the $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Oct. 31, 2026. Trained by Gustavo Delgado and ridden by Javier Castellano, he went off at about 17-1 and lost by 1¾ lengths.

It was the smallest Classic field in history, with seven runners, but not a weak one. The Puma beat Knightsbridge by a half-length for second, and finished ahead of defending champion Forever Young, Derby and Belmont winner Golden Tempo, and Preakness winner Napoleon Solo.

It was his first race against older horses. He carried 122 pounds to Sovereignty's 126.

The Puma in the Breeders' Cup Classic

The Delgado barn wanted to be in front of Sovereignty early. Sovereignty broke ahead of him instead, assistant Gustavo Delgado Jr. told BloodHorse.

His colt kept coming anyway. Delgado Jr. said The Puma "never gives up" and was "following (Sovereignty) the whole way."

BloodHorse's account of the race fits that:

  • Knightsbridge set the pace, with a half-mile in :47.64.
  • Sovereignty moved at the three-eighths pole, and The Puma went with him.
  • Sovereignty finished in 2:00.36. BloodHorse wrote that he "was never in danger from The Puma."

His 2026 season, race by race

The Puma did not race at 2. His whole career fits in one table.

That makes two wins, three seconds and a third from eight starts. He had earned $1,122,280 before the Classic.

Tampa and the Florida Derby

His first win came in the Tampa Bay Derby, where he rallied from last in a nine-horse field to beat Further Ado. Three weeks later he lost the Florida Derby by a nose to Commandment, and those two races made him a Kentucky Derby player.

Derby morning

He was about 7-1 going into May 2 when the barn found swelling in a leg. He was out about 12 hours before post time, too late for an alternate to replace him. That left 19 horses, and a last-minute scratch of Great White cut the field to 18.

Reports differ on the underlying cause, so we stick to the announced fact: leg swelling. The barn called it "really bad timing."

The Haskell and the Travers

He came back 16 weeks after the Florida Derby and finished fourth in the Haskell, won by 28-1 shot Baby Vino on a sloppy, sealed track. He was fourth again in the Travers, won by Leading Change, showing late interest.

The Pennsylvania Derby breakthrough

At Parx on Sept. 19, Castellano swung him six wide around the far turn and he took over entering the stretch. He led by 3 lengths in midstretch and held favorite Further Ado by a half-length, running 1⅛ miles in 1:49.10.

That was his first Grade 1 win. It looks better now: Further Ado won the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile on the Classic undercard by a nose, in 1:34.50. The Puma has finished ahead of him in all three of their meetings.

Who owns and trains The Puma?

The Delgados run this as a family team. Gustavo Delgado, the Venezuelan trainer, holds the license, and his son Gustavo Jr. works as his assistant. Together they are OGMA Investments.

The ownership group listed by BloodHorse is OGMA Investments, High Step Racing, TCC Stables, YNG Stables and JR Ranch. Published lists vary slightly from race to race.

The link to Mage, the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner, is real and runs deep:

  • Owners: Delgado Jr. and bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo each held a share of Mage. Restrepo is now racing manager and bloodstock agent for The Puma's owners, and High Step held micro shares of Mage through the Commonwealth syndicate.
  • Barn and rider: Delgado trained both, and Castellano rode both.
  • Purchase: Restrepo bought both as 2-year-olds in training.
  • Breeding: Mage's dam, Puca, came from Hidden Brook, which co-bred The Puma.

Castellano and Sovereignty's jockey, Junior Alvarado, are both Venezuelan, so the Classic finished with a Venezuelan 1-2 in the saddle.

Pedigree, price and that name

The Puma is by Essential Quality out of Eve of War, by Declaration of War. Hidden Brook Farm and Brian Kahn bred him in Kentucky.

He failed to reach his reserve at $95,000 as a yearling, then brought $150,000 at the 2025 Ocala Breeders' Spring Sale.

The name is a nod to the trainer. Delgado picked up the nickname for his resemblance to José Luis Rodríguez, the Venezuelan singer known as El Puma.

Why a Derby-morning scratch can still lead to a good autumn

A scratch feels like a disaster on the day, and financially and emotionally it often is. But it is not the same as a lost season, and The Puma shows why.

  • He never ran on the problem. Pulling a horse before the gate means no race effort on a leg that isn't right. Our guide to vet scratches explains how those checks work.
  • He got time. He missed all three Triple Crown races, then came back in July with a run of Grade 1 targets still ahead.
  • The calendar has room. A 3-year-old has major dirt races through the fall, so the Derby isn't the last chance to prove himself.
  • He got better with racing. Fourth, fourth, first, second is a colt who improved through the summer.

One horse proves nothing, and plenty of scratches lead nowhere. Still, as Castellano said back in Tampa, with 3-year-olds you have to give them a chance to develop.

The Classic's winner tells the same story. Sovereignty missed last year's Classic with a fever and skipped the Jockey Club Gold Cup this fall with a foot abscess, and still won.

What to watch next

Sovereignty and Knightsbridge both join the Darley roster at Jonabell Farm in 2027. No source we found announces a stud move for The Puma.

Delgado Jr. told BloodHorse the team is "in really good shape for next year," but named no race. In September, before the Classic, Gustavo Delgado told Agentes 305 that The Puma will reach his maturity at 4 and that "it is in our plans to go" to the Saudi Cup if everything continues well.

Turf Diario, which reported that interview, says he did not present it as a firm commitment. No source we found confirms a 2027 schedule, so treat any you see as a guess until the barn confirms it.

If you want to follow him:

  1. Watch for a statement from the Delgado barn or the owners.
  2. Check published workouts, the first public sign a horse is back in training.
  3. Read any plan closely: "considering" a race is not the same as being entered.
