A pattern is a set shape or sequence of moves you ride, such as a figure eight, a serpentine, or a route around cones. Western horsemanship and reining classes use published patterns, and many lessons use simple cone patterns to practice steering.
Why it matters
Patterns turn practice into a clear plan. They teach riders to look ahead, change direction smoothly, and prepare each transition, and they keep horses thinking instead of going around on autopilot.

Ride the cone pattern at the walk.
Try this
Draw the pattern on paper and walk it on foot before you ride it. Say each part out loud, like "circle left at the cone, then trot to the corner," so the order sticks.
Common mistake
Rushing a pattern to get it done usually makes it messier. Ride it first at the walk, get the shapes accurate, and only then add speed.
