Horse glossary
Balance
Staying steady without tipping or wobbling.
In Spanish: Equilibrio
What it means
Balance means staying steady and centered without tipping, gripping, or leaning on something for support. A balanced rider sits over the horse's center of gravity and moves with it, while a balanced horse carries itself evenly without rushing or falling onto its front legs.
Why it matters
Horse and rider affect each other's balance all the time. When a rider is balanced, the horse can move more freely and the rider can give clearer, gentler cues, which makes riding safer for both.
Example
Good balance helps you steer calmly.
Try this
Exercises like holding two-point, riding without stirrups on a lunge line with an instructor, and simple off-horse moves such as standing on one foot all build balance.
Common mistake
Holding onto the reins to stay in the saddle is a common habit when balance is shaky. If you need support, hold a neck strap or a bit of mane so the horse's mouth isn't used as a handle.
