Halt
When the horse stops moving and stands still.

What it means
A halt is when the horse comes to a complete stop and stands still, balanced on all four legs, until the rider asks it to move again. In dressage, a "square" halt means the horse stands with its legs evenly placed, like the corners of a rectangle.
Why it matters
Being able to stop reliably is one of the most important safety skills in riding. A good halt shows that the horse is listening and that the rider can use seat, legs, and hands together.

Ask for a halt, then breathe and relax.
Try this
Before you ask, breathe out, sit a little deeper, and stop following the movement with your hips. Close your fingers on the reins, and soften them as soon as the horse stops.
Common mistake
Pulling back hard and long is the most common halt mistake. It can make the horse lift its head and brace, while a clear, quick signal followed by a release teaches it to stop softly.
