Horse glossary

Transition

Changing speed or gait (walk to halt, walk to trot).

In Spanish: Transición

What it means

A transition is any change from one gait or speed to another, such as walk to trot, trot to walk, or walk to halt. Upward transitions go to a faster gait, and downward transitions go to a slower one. Riders also practice transitions within a gait, like a shorter trot to a longer trot.

Why it matters

Smooth transitions show that the horse is balanced and responsive. Practicing them often is one of the best ways to build strength in the horse's hindquarters and to improve a rider's timing.

Example

Practice walk-halt transitions.

Try this

Plan each transition a few strides ahead: pick a spot, get ready, and give a clear cue when you reach it. Walk-halt-walk transitions are a great first exercise for both horse and rider.

Common mistake

Surprising the horse with a sudden cue often gives a rough, unbalanced transition. Give the horse a moment of warning with your seat and body first, then ask.
