Obstacle
Something you ride around or over (with instruction).
In Spanish: Obstáculo
What it means
An obstacle is anything a horse and rider go over, through, or around, such as ground poles, small jumps, cones, bridges, gates, or water crossings. Trail classes and obstacle courses test how calmly a horse handles them, while jumping courses use fences of set heights.
Why it matters
Obstacles build trust and confidence when they are introduced step by step. A horse that learns new objects are safe is usually calmer out on trails and at shows.
Example
Start with simple obstacles at the walk.
Try this
Let the horse look at and sniff a new obstacle from the ground first. Approach it straight and at a steady walk, keep looking past it to where you are going, and reward the horse for trying.
Common mistake
Making a nervous horse face a scary obstacle again and again right away can make its fear worse. Go back to something easier and build up slowly, with an instructor's help.
