Arena
A fenced area where riders practice.
In Spanish: Pista
What it means
An arena is a fenced, level area with soft footing, such as sand or a sand-and-fiber mix, that is set aside for riding and training. It can be outdoors or covered, and many arenas are rectangles with letters on the fence that riders use as markers. A standard dressage arena measures 20 by 60 meters, and a small one 20 by 40 meters.
Why it matters
The fence and even footing give horse and rider a predictable space to practice, which is safer than an open field while you are learning. Good footing also cushions the horse's legs and helps prevent slips.

Try this
Before you ride, walk the arena and look for dropped tools, deep or wet spots, and loose poles. When several riders share the space, agree on a direction and pass each other left shoulder to left shoulder.
Common mistake
Many riders stay glued to the fence the whole ride. Using the whole arena, with circles, straight lines, and changes of direction, keeps the horse listening and works both sides of its body evenly.
