Rhythm
A steady beat in the horse’s steps.

What it means
Rhythm is the regular beat of a horse's footfalls in each gait: four beats at the walk, two at the trot, and three at the canter. A horse with good rhythm keeps each beat evenly spaced, like a steady drum. Rhythm and regularity are the first step of the dressage training scale.
Why it matters
An even rhythm is a sign that the horse is relaxed, balanced, and sound. An uneven or hurried beat can mean tension, loss of balance, or sometimes pain that should be checked.

Try this
Count the beats out loud or hum a song with the same tempo while you ride. Listening to the hoofbeats on hard ground is another great way to hear whether the rhythm stays even.
Common mistake
Many riders think a faster horse has more energy or better movement. Rushing usually breaks the rhythm, so a steady, even beat is the goal before going faster.
