Breeders' Cup Juvenile 2026: American History, U. S. S. Valor and the Road to Keeneland

- U. S. S. Valor's owner has not committed to the Juvenile and has said he is not keen on it, so don't count him as a starter yet.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile 2026: what changed on Oct. 3
The Breeders' Cup Juvenile 2026 is the championship race for 2-year-old colts and geldings, run Friday, Oct. 30 at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. On Saturday, Oct. 3, two of the main prep races went to American History and U. S. S. Valor, and both winners earned a free, guaranteed spot in the gate.
That gives the race its first clear storylines. One winner is a late-running colt who has never lost. The other won his Grade 1 by 6 1/2 lengths, but his owner isn't sure he wants to run.
New to racing? A "juvenile" is simply a 2-year-old racehorse. Our two-year-old racehorses guide explains why these young horses race and what their results really mean.
American History: the Breeders' Futurity winner
American History won the Grade 1, $650,000 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland by one length. He ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.88, beating the favorite Coach Pope by a length, with Q B Rocket third.
The race
- The early pace was quick (:23.52 for the first quarter, :46.54 for the half).
- John Velazquez let him rally from off the pace.
- He finished best in the stretch and won by a length.
- He paid $12 to win; Coach Pope was the favorite.
The horse
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Sire / dam | Constitution / Bloody Point (by War Front) |
| Trainer / jockey | Todd Pletcher / John Velazquez |
| Owners | WinStar Farm, First Go Racing, China Horse Club |
| Record | 2 starts, 2 wins |
He cost $825,000 as a yearling at the 2025 Keeneland September sale. He won his debut Aug. 22 at Saratoga going 6 1/2 furlongs, so the Futurity was his first try around two turns.
Why this matters most: the Futurity is run at the same track and the same distance as the Juvenile. American History has already shown he can handle Keeneland's dirt over this exact trip. For the full prep picture, see our Breeders' Futurity 2026 preview.
U. S. S. Valor: the Champagne Stakes winner
U. S. S. Valor won the Grade 1, $500,000 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park by 6 1/2 lengths. He ran the one-turn mile in 1:34.84, ahead of Gaudreau and Club Reign.
The race
The margin hides a messy trip. He was boxed in behind horses on the backstretch.
Near the quarter pole, jockey Manny Franco moved him out and bumped a tiring rival, Earth Song, to find room. Once clear, U. S. S. Valor pulled away under a light drive. He was the heavy odds-on favorite and paid $2.74.
The horse
- Pedigree: by War of Will (the 2019 Preakness winner) out of Spangled Banner.
- Connections: owned and bred by Team Valor International; trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey.
- Record: 3 starts, 2 wins, 1 third. He was third behind Gaudreau on debut at Saratoga, then won his maiden race by 13 1/4 lengths.
He is not unbeaten, but he turned the tables on Gaudreau in a big way. Our Champagne Stakes 2026 preview covers that rivalry.
Is U. S. S. Valor running in the Juvenile?
Not confirmed. His connections have not committed to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and are weighing other options.
Owner Barry Irwin told reporters he would think about the Breeders' Cup but is "not real enamored with the idea." McGaughey said the decision is up to the owner, and DRF reported that the owner leans toward a winter of training aimed at the Kentucky Derby.
Some owners skip the Juvenile to give a young horse a lighter fall and aim at the next spring. Until Team Valor announces a decision, treat U. S. S. Valor as a possible starter, not a certain one.
How 2-year-olds qualify for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile
The Juvenile allows a maximum of 14 starters. There are two main ways into the gate.
- Win and You're In. Winning a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race for juveniles gives an automatic berth with entry fees paid. Horses based in North America outside Kentucky also get a $10,000 travel allowance.
- Points and the selection panel. Other pre-entered horses are ranked by graded stakes points and by a panel of racing officials' judgment.
A Win and You're In horse must still be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by Oct. 19 to get the perks. The berth is an invitation, not an obligation. That is exactly why U. S. S. Valor's spot may go unused.

Why it matters for the Kentucky Derby
The Juvenile is the biggest points race of the fall on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. It awards 30-15-9-6-3 points to the top five finishers.
The Futurity and the Champagne each paid 10-5-3-2-1. So American History and U. S. S. Valor each have 10 points now, and a Juvenile win would add 30 more.
Fall points are only a start. Most of the 20-horse Derby field is set by the points list, and the biggest points come in the spring preps.
Does the Juvenile winner win the Derby?
Sometimes, but not often. Street Sense (2006) and Nyquist (2015) both won the Juvenile and the next year's Derby. Many Juvenile winners never make it to Churchill Downs at all.
The real value is a title shot. The Juvenile winner usually becomes the leading candidate for the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old colt, and McGaughey said that if U. S. S. Valor is going to be a champion, he will have to win the Breeders' Cup.
What to watch next
Here is your checklist between now and Oct. 30:
- Team Valor's decision. The biggest open question. Watch for an announcement on U. S. S. Valor's next start.
- Workouts. American History and the other contenders will post timed works at Keeneland or their home tracks. Steady, routine works are a good sign.
- Other qualifiers. More Challenge races for juveniles may still fill out the picture, and runners from California and overseas can ship in.
- Pre-entries and the draw. The final field and post positions come out the week of the race.
- Rematches. Coach Pope and Q B Rocket could meet American History again over the same course.
Watching on TV or going to Keeneland? Look for the horses in the paddock before the race. Calm, relaxed young horses tend to handle the crowd better.
What matters most is the horses themselves. These colts are still growing, and a smart team puts the colt's long-term soundness ahead of one race. Want to learn more about racing terms? Our glossary explains the basics, and you can share your thoughts in the community.
