Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies 2026: Emphatic Stays Unbeaten and Books Her Spot
The Nyquist filly led all the way at Keeneland to go 3-for-3, and she has now won over the exact course and distance of the Oct. 30 championship.
Updated 6 min read

Why it's trending
On Keeneland's opening day, Oct. 2, unbeaten Emphatic won the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades and Serenas Ghost won the Jessamine, so both fillies earned Breeders' Cup berths four weeks out.
TL;DR
- Emphatic, an unbeaten Pennsylvania-bred Nyquist filly, led all the way to win the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades at Keeneland on Oct. 2 in 1:43.40 for 1 1/16 miles.
- She held off odds-on Summer Starlet, with Oh She Said Yes third, and is now 3-for-3 for trainer Brendan Walsh and owners Gainesway and Andrew Rosen. Tyler Gaffalione rode her in the Alcibiades.
- The win is a 'Win and You're In': a fees-paid berth in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Friday, Oct. 30, at Keeneland over the same 1 1/16 miles.
- On the turf side, 22-1 shot Serenas Ghost won the Grade 2 Jessamine the same day and earned a Juvenile Fillies Turf berth.
- A berth is an option, not an order: her connections decide whether she runs.

Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies 2026: Emphatic punches her ticket
The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies 2026 is the $2 million championship for 2-year-old fillies, run over 1 1/16 miles of dirt on Friday, Oct. 30, at Keeneland. As of Oct. 2, the first big name in it is Emphatic, who stayed unbeaten by winning the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades on Keeneland's opening day.
The Alcibiades is a "Win and You're In" race, so the win gives her a guaranteed starting spot with entry fees paid. It also makes her a contender to know, because she has already won over the exact course and distance of the championship.
How Emphatic won the Alcibiades
Emphatic broke sharply from post 1 and led into the first turn. She set fractions of :24.45 and :48.74, then held off Summer Starlet, the odds-on choice and an unbeaten Spinaway winner, who pressed her from the outside. Oh She Said Yes was third in the seven-filly field.
The final time was 1:43.40 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast track, and the winning margin was 1 1/4 lengths. BloodHorse said she "inched away" from Summer Starlet late, so this was a fight, not a romp.
The team
- Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione in the Alcibiades (Edwin Gonzalez rode her in the Sorority)
- Trainer: Brendan Walsh
- Owners: Gainesway Stable (Antony Beck) and Andrew Rosen
- Pedigree: by Nyquist, out of the Tiznow mare Convinced
- Bred in: Pennsylvania, by Jon A. Marshall
- Price tag: $260,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September Yearling Sale
Her three starts
| Date | Track | Race | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 25 | Colonial Downs | Debut (maiden) | Won by 6 3/4 lengths |
| Aug. 29 | Monmouth Park | Sorority Stakes, 1 mile | Won by 5 1/4 lengths |
| Oct. 2 | Keeneland | Alcibiades (G1), 1 1/16 miles | Won by 1 1/4 lengths |
That second start matters. The Sorority was around two turns, so the Alcibiades was not her first time handling a longer race with two bends.
What is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies?
The Juvenile Fillies has been part of the Breeders' Cup since 1984. It is open only to 2-year-old fillies (young females), and it usually decides the Eclipse Award for champion 2-year-old filly.
It also points toward next spring. Top finishers earn Kentucky Oaks qualifying points, and fans treat it as an early look at the Oaks crop. Few winners go on to win both, though: Churchill Downs lists only Open Mind and Silverbulletday as doing the double.
Quick facts for 2026:
- Date: Friday, Oct. 30, at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky
- Scheduled post time: 3:35 p.m. ET (final times are due Oct. 21)
- Distance and surface: 1 1/16 miles on dirt, two turns
- Purse: $2 million
- TV: USA Network carries Friday's card, 1-6 p.m. ET
Where it sits on Future Stars Friday
Friday of Breeders' Cup week is Future Stars Friday: five championship races, all for 2-year-olds. The Juvenile Fillies is the second race of the five, and the Juvenile Fillies Turf follows about 40 minutes later.
The Juvenile Fillies and the Juvenile, for colts and geldings, are Friday's two richest races. Our Breeders' Cup 2026 guide has every post time and the TV plan for both days.
How the field fills: berths, Dirt Dozen credits and points
There are three main routes into the starting gate.
- Win and You're In. Winners of designated Breeders' Cup Challenge races get an automatic, fees-paid berth. The Alcibiades is one of them. Our Win and You're In explainer covers what a berth includes.
- Dirt Dozen credits. Twelve graded dirt races, two per division, pay the top three entry-fee credits instead of a berth. Saturday's Grade 1 Frizette at Belmont is one of the Juvenile Fillies races; see our Frizette Stakes 2026 preview.
- Points and a panel. Fields are capped, usually at 14. If too many fillies are pre-entered, Challenge winners get first priority, then graded-stakes points, then the judgment of a panel of racing experts.
Pre-entries are due Oct. 19. A Challenge winner that isn't already nominated to the Breeders' Cup program must be nominated by then to claim her rewards.
One point that trips up new fans: a berth is an offer, not an order. Her owners and trainer decide whether she runs, and nothing on Oct. 2 changes that.
How to read a 2-year-old filly's form
Juveniles have only a few races on their record, so each one tells you more. Use this checklist when you look at any filly in the Juvenile Fillies picture.
- Count the starts. Emphatic has three. A filly with one start has shown talent, but not yet whether she can repeat it.
- Look for two turns. The Breeders' Cup race has two turns. A filly who has only sprinted around one turn is still answering a question.
- Check the class. A maiden win, a stakes win and a Grade 1 win are three different levels. Our guide to what a Grade 1 race is explains the ladder.
- Course experience. Keeneland's surface and its short run to the first turn reward fillies who have already raced there.
- Running style. A front-runner like Emphatic needs a clean break. A filly who sits just off the leader, as Summer Starlet did, needs room to get past in the stretch.
- Track condition. "Good" or "sloppy" means a wet track. Some young horses handle it and some don't.
- Spacing. Four weeks between the Alcibiades and Oct. 30 is a normal gap, but watch for steady workouts.

Sidebar: Serenas Ghost and the Juvenile Fillies Turf
The turf sister race had its own shock on Oct. 2. Serenas Ghost, sent off at 22-1, slipped through along the rail in deep stretch to win the Grade 2 Jessamine by 1 1/4 lengths. Seneca Park was second and Mel Went Home third.
- Jockey: Luis Saez
- Trainer: Joe Sharp
- Owner: Moving Forward Racing
- Pedigree: by Girvin, out of Sirenusa
- Record: 2-for-2, after a Sept. 11 debut win at Horseshoe Indianapolis
- Time: 1:45.57 for 1 1/16 miles on good turf
The Jessamine is also Win and You're In, so she has a fees-paid berth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. That race is 1 mile on Keeneland's grass course with a $1 million purse, run on Oct. 30 right after the dirt Juvenile Fillies.
What to watch next
- Saturday, Oct. 3: the Frizette at Belmont, a Dirt Dozen race for the Juvenile Fillies. Results aren't in yet; read our Frizette preview for the field.
- Saturday, Oct. 3: Belmont's Miss Grillo, another Win and You're In race for the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
- Weekly workouts: steady published works are the best public sign a filly is on track.
- Connections' plans: wait for the owners or trainer to confirm the race rather than assuming.
- Oct. 19: pre-entries close, and the field picture sharpens.
- Oct. 21: final post times due.
- Oct. 30: Future Stars Friday at Keeneland.
