Breeders' Futurity 2026: what's happening Saturday
The Breeders' Futurity 2026 is Saturday, Oct. 3, at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., and Coach Pope is the horse everyone is watching. Six 2-year-olds go 1 1/16 miles on dirt in the $650,000 Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity, with post time set for 5:16 p.m. ET.
The race is part of Keeneland's fall meet (see our Keeneland Fall Meet 2026 guide). It's also one of the last big tests before the Breeders' Cup returns to the same track on Oct. 30-31.
The field at a glance
Morning-line odds are the track oddsmaker's estimate of how the betting will go. Here they're simply a measure of who's favored, not a prediction.

|---|---|---|---|
| Coach Pope | Kenny McPeek | Jose Ortiz | 4-5 |
| Q B Rocket | Brad Cox | Junior Alvarado | 2-1 |
| American History | Todd Pletcher | John Velazquez | 4-1 |

| Jaded | Mark Casse | Irad Ortiz Jr. | 15-1 |
| Title Worthy | Dallas Stewart | Gerardo Corrales | 20-1 |
Who is Coach Pope?
Coach Pope is a colt by Tapit out of the Grade 3-winning mare Gamble's Ghost. He sold for $350,000 at the Fasig-Tipton fall yearling sale in October 2025. His name honors Mark Pope, the University of Kentucky men's basketball coach, which is a big part of why he's getting attention well beyond racing fans in Lexington.
He's made two starts:
- Aug. 8, Saratoga: second in a maiden sprint (a race for horses that haven't won yet), behind Gaudreau. Gaudreau has since become one of the East's top juveniles (see our Champagne Stakes 2026 preview).
- Sept. 12, Churchill Downs: won a one-turn mile maiden race by 12½ lengths.
McPeek, who has won the Futurity three times, told reporters the colt has trained like a top horse from the start and has a great mind. Saturday is his first stakes race and his first time around two turns.
The main rivals
- Q B Rocket is trained by Brad Cox and is second choice on the morning line at 2-1.
- American History comes from Todd Pletcher, who has won this race five times, and is ridden by Hall of Famer John Velazquez.
- Jaded (Mark Casse), Phone Booth (Doug O'Neill, shipping in from California) and Title Worthy (Dallas Stewart) complete the six-horse field.
Why the Breeders' Futurity matters
This is a "Win and You're In" race. The winner earns a fees-paid starting spot in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile, the championship race for 2-year-old colts and geldings, also run at 1 1/16 miles. Our explainer on how Win and You're In works covers the full series.
The Futurity is also on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Points go to the top five finishers on a 10-5-3-2-1 scale, and they count toward the 2027 Derby.
The race has a real track record. BloodHorse counts six Breeders' Cup Juvenile winners among the last 30 Futurity winners, and 15 of those 30 finished in the top three in the Juvenile.
Why 2-year-old stakes are a big deal
In Thoroughbred racing, every horse turns a year older on Jan. 1. That means this fall's 2-year-olds are next spring's Derby 3-year-olds.
Juvenile stakes are the first time young horses meet quality company. Here's what they tell owners, breeders and fans:
- Class: a maiden win can be against anyone, but a Grade 1 is the top level.
- Distance: sprints test speed, and two-turn races start to show stamina.
- Value: a graded stakes win raises a colt's value as a future stallion.
- Schedule: results shape where horses run next, from the Breeders' Cup to winter Derby preps.
Young horses are still growing, so trainers space their races carefully. For background, read our guide to two-year-old racehorses.
Why a first try at two turns is a real test
Most 2-year-olds start in sprints of 5 to 7 furlongs, often around one turn. Coach Pope's maiden win was at a mile but around just one turn. Going 1 1/16 miles at Keeneland means a start in front of the grandstand, two full turns and a longer run overall.
What changes for the horse:
- Rating: the colt has to settle behind or alongside others instead of running flat out from the gate.
- Turns: each turn asks him to switch leads (the leading front leg) smoothly and keep balance at speed.
- Stamina: the extra sixteenth of a mile shows whether a pedigree built for distance holds up.
- Kickback and traffic: horses who led early in sprints may take dirt in the face for the first time.
McPeek has said he expects the colt to handle two turns easily, and he compares him to Ghostzapper, the sire of his dam. Still, no one knows how a 2-year-old handles two turns until he does it.
The West Coast prep: Hughes in the American Pharoah Stakes 2026
The same evening, Santa Anita runs the $300,000 Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes, also at 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Post time is 7:04 p.m. ET, and it's another Win and You're In race for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile with the same 10-5-3-2-1 Derby points.
The headliner is Hughes, Bob Baffert's unbeaten Into Mischief colt and the 4-5 morning-line favorite. He won Del Mar's Best Pal (G3) and the Del Mar Futurity (G1), both sprints, but he's never run two turns. Juan Hernandez rides.
Baffert also sends Imperial Honor, Domus and Emancipate. Doug O'Neill runs Dang Son, third in the Del Mar Futurity, and California-bred Net Par fills out the six-horse field.
Together, these two races are among the most important Breeders' Cup Juvenile prep races of the fall.
How to follow the race and what to watch next

Frequently asked questions
When is the 2026 Breeders' Futurity and what time is post?

Who is Coach Pope named after?
Mark Pope, the University of Kentucky men's basketball coach. The colt is by Tapit and trained by Kenny McPeek.
What does the Breeders' Futurity winner get?
A share of the $650,000 purse, a fees-paid spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland and 10 points toward the 2027 Kentucky Derby. Second through fifth earn 5, 3, 2 and 1 points.

When is the American Pharoah Stakes 2026?
Also Saturday, Oct. 3, at Santa Anita, with post at 7:04 p.m. ET. Unbeaten Hughes is the morning-line favorite and runs two turns for the first time.

Yes. BloodHorse counts six Juvenile winners among the last 30 Futurity winners, and half of those 30 finished in the Juvenile's top three.
