Friday's opening-day trio
Friday's three stakes are the Alcibiades, the Phoenix and the Jessamine. All three are Win-and-You're-In races, pointing to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, Sprint and Juvenile Fillies Turf respectively. Post times listed by Keeneland are 4:12 p.m. (Phoenix), 4:44 p.m. (Jessamine) and 5:16 p.m. (Alcibiades).
The Alcibiades is for two-year-old fillies, a group that is still learning the game. Our guide to two-year-old racehorses explains why these early races matter. Keeneland's preview lists unbeaten Summer Starlet, winner of the Spinaway at Saratoga, in the field of eight.
What the stakes lead to
Saturday's and Sunday's winners can also punch a ticket. The Turf Mile, the Breeders' Futurity, the Thoroughbred Club of America, the Spinster and the Bourbon are all Win-and-You're-In races. Those are the races to watch for a preview of Breeders' Cup weekend; the full schedule is in our Breeders' Cup 2026 guide.
Plan Your Visit
Tickets must be bought in advance through Keeneland's official ticket office at tickets.keeneland.com/racing. Check keeneland.com before you go, since availability changes.
- Gates and first post: 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Stakes come later on the card, so you don't need to arrive at opening to catch them.
- Payments: Dining rooms, The Keeneland Shop and roaming beverage vendors are cashless this fall. Cards and mobile wallets work. Cash is still accepted at the Track Kitchen, betting windows, concessions, bars and program stands.
- Programs: Digital programs are free at keeneland.com/program.
- Questions: Keeneland's listed phone numbers are 859-254-3412 and 800-456-3412.
The Hill and tailgating
The Hill is a free tailgating area open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting. Enter through Gate 1 (at Man o' War Blvd.) or Gate 4. It opens at 8 a.m. and stays open until an hour after the last race, and complimentary shuttles to the track are offered.
It has a jumbo TV, food trucks and live music. Check keeneland.com for parking and tailgating rules before packing a cooler.
What to Wear to Keeneland
Dress depends on where your ticket puts you. Keeneland has three levels:
- Casual: General admission, reserved grandstand and loge boxes.
- Business casual: Several dining rooms, such as the 1936 Room and Rooftop Dining. No denim.
- Business formal: The Clubhouse, Keeneland Room and corporate suites.
For general admission, dress in layers. October mornings in Lexington can be cool and afternoons warm, so bring a light jacket and comfortable shoes for grass, gravel and a lot of walking. Keeneland's dress-code page has the current rules for each room.
Keeneland With Kids
Children under 12 aren't required to follow the full dress code, though Keeneland encourages them to dress up. The track schedules family-minded days, and Saturday mornings are the easiest entry point for young visitors.
- Sunrise Trackside: Free, 8–10 a.m. on Saturdays Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24. It's geared toward families, with horse petting from 8:30 to 9 a.m., and a light breakfast is for sale. Oct. 24 is a Halloween edition with a costume contest.
- Family and theme days: Make-A-Wish Day (Oct. 8), Kids Club Family Day (Oct. 11), College Scholarship Day (Oct. 16), Heroes Day (Oct. 18) and Teacher Appreciation Day (Oct. 24).
- Safety: Horses are large and can startle. Teach children to stay behind rails, keep hands away from noses unless a handler invites a pat, and never walk behind a horse. Our horse safety for kids guide has the basics, and the Kids section has more for young fans.
Paddock, Walking Ring and Early Mornings
Before each race the horses are saddled in the paddock and walk in the ring. It's the best free lesson in how a racehorse looks. Watch for a horse that walks forward with loose, swinging strides and a calm eye, and remember that sweat or jigging isn't always a bad sign, because some horses are just excitable.
Sunrise Trackside is your early-morning option on race Saturdays. If you want to see horses work out on the main track, Keeneland's 2026 Fall Meet plan-your-day page lists the grounds as open for workouts from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Patrons at morning activities are asked to leave at 10 a.m., and ticketed patrons may re-enter through security checkpoints when the gates reopen at 11 a.m. Keeneland also posts a daily-updated workouts database at keeneland.com/workouts.
Watching From Home
Every race streams free on keeneland.com, the Race Day App, Keeneland Select and YouTube. FanDuel TV has live coverage of every race. Keeneland lists NBC and Peacock for Fall Stars Weekend and FS1 and FS2 the following weekend; check listings for exact times.
