Caulfield Cup 2026: The 150th Running, Ballot Exemptions and G1 Form
Melbourne's great handicap turns 150 on Saturday with a record A$6 million purse. Here's what last weekend's Caulfield Group 1s changed, and how weights, ballots and the road to the Melbourne Cup work.

Why it's trending
Two Caulfield Group 1s on Oct. 10 (Lady Shenandoah's top-weight Toorak and Land Legend's track-record Might And Power upset) landed a week before the 150th Caulfield Cup, with final acceptances and the barrier draw due Tuesday.
TL;DR
- The 150th Caulfield Cup (Group 1, 2400m handicap) is Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, with a record A$6 million purse, and every starter is paid.
- Lady Shenandoah won the Toorak under 58kg top weight but is headed to the Empire Rose, not the Cup.
- Land Legend upset Sheza Alibi in the Might And Power in a 2:00.30 track record, and Racing Victoria lists him as ballot-exempt for the Cup.
- Final acceptances and the barrier draw are Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Cup winner gets a ballot-free spot in the Melbourne Cup.

Caulfield Cup 2026: date, distance and the record purse
The Caulfield Cup 2026 is run on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, over 2400 meters (about 1½ miles) of turf. It is the 150th running of the Group 1 handicap, and the Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) has raised the prize pool to a record A$6 million.
For the first time, every starter earns money. The winner takes A$3.3 million, and horses that finish outside the top 10 still collect A$60,000, The Straight reported when the MRC announced the changes in June.
Quick facts
- Date: Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026 (Caulfield Cup Day, the same afternoon as The Everest in Sydney)
- Distance: 2400m on turf
- Race type: Group 1 handicap
- Field: up to 18 runners plus 4 emergencies
- Purse: A$6 million, a race record
- Field status: 34 horses were still in contention after second acceptances
Some betting pages still show A$5 million, which was last year's figure. The MRC's June announcement set the 2026 pool at A$6 million.
We won't guess the final field or barriers. Both become official only after acceptances close and the draw is held on Tuesday.
What Saturday's Caulfield Group 1s told us
Last Saturday, Oct. 10, was Caulfield Guineas Day, and two Group 1s on that card reshaped the spring picture. Warwoven's Guineas win is covered in our Cox Plate 2026 guide.
Toorak Handicap 2026 result: Lady Shenandoah carries 58kg and wins
Chris Waller's mare Lady Shenandoah, ridden by James McDonald, won the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) under top weight of 58kg. She won a home-straight battle with her former stablemate Changing Colours by a head, according to the official result, with Welcometotheshow a narrow margin further back in third.
Changing Colours, now trained by Lucy Yeomans, carried 52kg, six kilos less. Beating a good horse while giving away that much weight is why handicap fans rate this win so highly. It was Lady Shenandoah's fourth Group 1.
She is not a Caulfield Cup runner. Waller said she is likely to target the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes in about three weeks.
Land Legend sets a track record in the Might And Power
The Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m, weight-for-age) produced the shock of the day. Ciaron Maher's Land Legend, ridden by Ethan Brown, led and held off the odds-on favorite Sheza Alibi by a short head, with Birdman third.
TDN AusNZ reported the time, 2:00.30, as a new 2000m track record at Caulfield. It was Land Legend's second Group 1, after the 2024 Metropolitan in Sydney, and it pushed his earnings past A$2 million.
Now Maher has a choice. He is weighing a third Caulfield Cup attempt against the Cox Plate on Oct. 24. He also said the crowded 18-horse rush to the first turn may not suit the horse.
Racing Victoria's order-of-entry update on X listed Land Legend among the horses that gained a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption. If he goes, he is guaranteed a start.
What is a handicap race? Why 58kg matters
In a handicap race, an official handicapper assigns each horse a weight based on its rating. The best horses carry the most and lower-rated horses carry less, with the aim of giving every runner a fair chance.
The weight covers the jockey plus gear. If a jockey weighs less than the allotted weight, lead is added to the saddlecloth to make up the difference.
Why does it matter? Over a long race, extra weight costs speed and stamina, and in a close finish a kilo or two can be the difference. How much it matters varies by horse, track and pace.
- Top weight, like Lady Shenandoah's 58kg, usually goes to the highest-rated horse in the race.
- Light weights help lower-rated horses and improving stayers get competitive.
- Penalties: a horse that wins a key race after weights are issued can be re-handicapped and carry extra weight later.
| Race type | How weight is set | 2026 examples |
|---|---|---|
| Handicap | By rating: the best horse carries the most | Caulfield Cup, Toorak, Melbourne Cup |
| Weight-for-age | By age and sex only, not ability | Cox Plate, Might And Power |
That's why Land Legend's Might And Power win and Lady Shenandoah's Toorak win tell you different things. One beat the best horses on even terms. The other beat a field while giving away kilos.

Caulfield Cup ballot exemption: how 'golden tickets' work
The Caulfield Cup takes 18 starters. When more horses accept than there are places, the field is set by an order of entry, and horses holding a ballot exemption go in first no matter where they rank.
A horse earns an exemption by winning a designated lead-up race. Exemptions reported in 2026 include:
- Naturalism Stakes (2000m): Zahrann won it on Sept. 19.
- Herbert Power Stakes (2400m): Pinhole won it, though Waller says he favors a Melbourne Cup path instead.
- Might And Power Stakes: Racing Victoria listed Land Legend as exempt after Saturday's win.
Races.com.au reported that five of the 34 remaining horses held exemptions after second acceptances. We couldn't find MRC confirmation that the Toorak carries a Caulfield Cup exemption in 2026, so we haven't listed it. Lady Shenandoah isn't heading to the Cup anyway.
The new European qualifiers
For the 150th running, the MRC added four European races whose winners get a ballot-free path:
- Wolferton Stakes (Listed, 2004m), Royal Ascot
- Glorious Stakes (Group 3, 2412m), Goodwood
- Prix de Reux (Group 3, 2500m), Deauville
- Ballyroan Stakes (Group 3, 2414m), Leopardstown
The MRC said it wanted a more current, practical route for British, Irish and French stables. An exemption guarantees a start, not a lighter weight, so the horse still runs under its handicap.
How the Caulfield Cup feeds the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup
Melbourne's spring builds to three big Group 1s in less than three weeks, and the Caulfield Cup comes first:
- Caulfield Cup: Sat., Oct. 17, Caulfield (2400m handicap)
- Cox Plate: Sat., Oct. 24, at Flemington this year while Moonee Valley is rebuilt (2040m weight-for-age)
- Melbourne Cup: Tue., Nov. 3, Flemington (3200m handicap)
The Caulfield Cup winner earns a ballot-free spot in the Melbourne Cup, which is why so many stayers use it as a stepping stone. The catch is that a big win can bring a weight penalty for Flemington.
Horses such as Land Legend face the Cup-or-Plate question. Running in both means a quick back-up a week apart, which suits some horses and not others.
Defending champion Half Yours won both Cups in 2025 and was the topweight on 57.5kg among the remaining entries, according to races.com.au. For the Flemington side of the story, see our Melbourne Cup 2026 guide and our Turnbull Stakes 2026 recap.
How to watch Caulfield Cup Day
In Australia, Seven shows Caulfield Cup Day free-to-air on Channel 7 and the 7plus app. Coverage starts at 12 p.m. in Sydney and Melbourne and 11:30 a.m. in Adelaide, with earlier starts on 7two in Brisbane and Perth.
Those are broadcast start times, not race times. The Cup traditionally runs late in the Melbourne afternoon, so check the official program once it's published.
Watching from the Americas? Melbourne is on daylight saving time (AEDT, UTC+11). A late-afternoon Melbourne race lands in the early hours of Saturday on the U.S. East Coast and on Friday night on the West Coast. Check your local racing broadcaster or wagering platform for international coverage.
What to watch next
- Tuesday, Oct. 13: final acceptances in the morning, then the barrier draw. That's when the 18 runners and four emergencies become official.
- Waller's call: he has six of the 34 left and said he could run anywhere from three to five.
- Land Legend's plan: the Caulfield Cup, the Cox Plate or both.
- Track rating: spring rain can change which horses are suited, so check the rating on race morning.
- The same afternoon: The Everest runs at Randwick. See our Everest 2026 guide.
