Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint 2026: R Disaster and Ways and Means

R Disaster went gate to wire at Belmont on Thursday and her trainer says Keeneland is likely next. Two days later the Thoroughbred Club of America hands out the last automatic spot. Here is how the female sprint championship works and who is heading there.

A dark bay filly with a jockey in black silks and a green saddlecloth gallops at full stride down a dirt track beside a white rail.

R Disaster won Belmont's rescheduled Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on Oct. 1 and her trainer pointed to the Breeders' Cup. Keeneland runs the Thoroughbred Club of America, the last Win and You're In for the Filly & Mare Sprint, on Oct. 3.

TL;DR

  • The $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint is a Grade 1 over seven furlongs on dirt for fillies and mares 3 and up, run Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, at Keeneland.
  • R Disaster won Belmont's Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on Oct. 1 from gate to wire by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:16.17. Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said she will likely get a shot at the Breeders' Cup; that is a plan, not an entry.
  • Ballerina winner Ways and Means (Chad Brown) and Princess Rooney winner Kerry's Kiss (Joseph) already hold fees-paid berths. Explora, Eclatant and Kilwin lead the rest of Daily Racing Form's list.
  • Saturday, Oct. 3, Keeneland runs the $400,000 Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America at 6 1/2 furlongs, the last Win and You're In for this race. Eclatant is in the field of seven.
  • Key dates: pre-entries close Oct. 19, the field is announced Oct. 21, and entries close with the post position draw on Oct. 26.

What is the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint 2026?

The Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint 2026 is a $1 million Grade 1 race over seven furlongs (7/8 of a mile) on dirt for fillies and mares 3 and up, run Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. It is the championship for female sprinters, and it got a jolt this week: on Thursday, Oct. 1, Grade 1 winner R Disaster won Belmont Park's Grade 2 Gallant Bloom from gate to wire, and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said she will likely get her shot at Keeneland.

Two days later, on Saturday, Oct. 3, Keeneland runs the $400,000 Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America, the last "Win and You're In" race for this division. The winner gets a fees-paid spot in the starting gate.

R Disaster's Gallant Bloom: what happened at Belmont

Thursday's card was unusual. A nor'easter wiped out racing on Sept. 26-27, so the New York Racing Association moved six graded stakes to Oct. 1, and the Gallant Bloom was one of them.

  • Result: R Disaster broke sharply, led at every call and won by 1 1/4 lengths over Senza Parole. Beauty Reigns was third, 4 1/4 lengths farther back, ahead of Munnings Express and Queen Jubilee.
  • Time: 1:16.17 for 6 1/2 furlongs, after early fractions of 22.67 and 45.78 seconds.
  • Team: jockey Jose Ortiz, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., owners Averill Racing and Anthony Mattera. She is a 5-year-old Florida-bred mare by Awesome Slew.
  • Record: 10 wins from 18 starts and close to $1.5 million earned. Her 2026 wins are the Hurricane Bertie, the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff at Churchill Downs in May and now the Gallant Bloom, a race she also won in 2025.

The win mattered because of what came before it. In the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga on Aug. 29 she finished sixth, the only time in 18 starts she has missed the board. Joseph said the Ballerina was mostly about getting her fitness back, and that with only one workout into Thursday's race she should move forward from here.

He added that, all being well, she will get a shot at the Breeders' Cup. Treat that as likely, not confirmed. She still has to be pre-entered and pass the pre-race exams like everyone else.

Saturday's Thoroughbred Club of America: the last Win and You're In

The Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes 2026 runs Saturday, Oct. 3, as race 7 at Keeneland, on the opening weekend of the fall meet. New this year, Keeneland stretched it from 6 to 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track. Seven fillies and mares are entered.

Three storylines to follow:

  • Eclatant won the Grade 1 Madison over this track in April and opened 2026 with three straight wins, then ran poorly in the Ballerina. She carries 125 pounds, the most in the field, because of that Grade 1 win.
  • Praying won this race in 2025 as a 3-year-old, beating her elders by half a length, and returns as the defending champion. Zeitlos won it in 2024.
  • Echo Sound was a solid fourth in the Ballerina and is trained by Rusty Arnold, whose barn is based at Keeneland.

Whoever wins gets an automatic, fees-paid spot in the Filly & Mare Sprint, as long as she is nominated to the Breeders' Cup program. The berth belongs to the winner only; it does not pass down to the runner-up.

How horses qualify for the Filly & Mare Sprint

There are two doors into the 14-horse field, and one rule that applies to everyone.

  1. Win a Challenge Series race. The Ballerina, the Princess Rooney and the Thoroughbred Club of America are this year's three Win and You're In races for the division. The winner's pre-entry and entry fees, $15,000 each, are waived. Our Win and You're In explainer goes deeper.
  2. Get ranked in. Every other horse must be pre-entered by noon ET on Monday, Oct. 19. If more than 14 want in, Breeders' Cup ranks the pre-entries using points earned in graded stakes plus the votes of a panel of racing experts. The field, with up to four also-eligibles, is announced Wednesday, Oct. 21.
  3. Be nominated. Every runner must be Breeders' Cup nominated. Most are nominated as weanlings. A horse of racing age can be added for $100,000, or $200,000 if her sire was not nominated.

Entries close at 10 a.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 26, and the post position draw follows that afternoon in the Keeneland sales pavilion. Three-year-old fillies carry 122 pounds; older mares carry 124.

Who the contenders are

Daily Racing Form's division page, as of Oct. 1, lists nine names: Ways and Means on top, then Explora, Eclatant, Kilwin, R Disaster, Sweet Azteca, Kerry's Kiss, Foie Gras and Majestic Oops. Here is where the main ones stand.

Ways and Means (Chad Brown)

The division leader. The 5-year-old Klaravich Stables mare by Practical Joke won the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga on Aug. 29 by 5 1/2 lengths in 1:22.05 under Flavien Prat, beating Kilwin, Beauty Reigns and Echo Sound. R Disaster was sixth and Eclatant seventh that day.

Brown said he likes giving her time between starts and that the wait keeps her fresh for the Breeders' Cup, so a straight run to Keeneland is the plan. He also said the Filly & Mare Sprint is expected to be her last race before she sells as a broodmare prospect at the November sales. She has won six of seven starts at Saratoga, but R Disaster beat her by 2 1/4 lengths in May's Derby City Distaff.

R Disaster (Saffie Joseph Jr.)

The front-runner with a Grade 1 win at the exact Breeders' Cup distance: her Derby City Distaff came over seven furlongs in 1:20.94. Her plan is Keeneland, pending a clean few weeks.

Kerry's Kiss (Saffie Joseph Jr.)

Joseph's second runner already holds a berth. The 4-year-old Vino Rosso filly won the Grade 3 Princess Rooney at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 12 from gate to wire in the rain over a track rated good, her fourth straight win. Joseph won this Breeders' Cup race in 2024 with Soul of an Angel.

Explora (Bob Baffert)

The 3-year-old won the Grade 1 Test at Saratoga on Aug. 8 by five lengths, then lost the Grade 3 Dogwood at Churchill Downs on Sept. 19 by a head to Conceit. As a 3-year-old she would carry 2 pounds less than the older mares.

Eclatant (Brad Cox)

Runs Saturday in the Thoroughbred Club of America. A win hands her a berth; a loss leaves her relying on the rankings.

Others to keep in mind

Kilwin and Echo Sound finished second and fourth in the Ballerina. Daily Racing Form also lists Sweet Azteca, Foie Gras and Majestic Oops. Any mare who wins Saturday at Keeneland joins the list on the spot.

Why sprinters are different

If you are new to racing, think of a sprinter as a 200-meter runner and a Classic horse as a miler, built and trained for different jobs.

  • The distance. Seven furlongs is about 1,400 meters and takes roughly 81 to 83 seconds at this level. The race record is 1:20.20, set by Gamine at Keeneland in 2020. The Distaff, the main race for older mares, is 1 1/8 miles, and we cover it in our Distaff guide.
  • The shape. Sprinters tend to be compact and heavily muscled behind, built to accelerate. Distance horses are often leaner and longer. See how that works in our anatomy guide.
  • The start. There is no time to recover from a slow break. R Disaster and Kerry's Kiss both like to lead; Ways and Means is happy to sit just behind the speed and pounce.
  • The in-between distance. Seven furlongs is a stretch for pure 6-furlong speed and too short for mares who want a mile. That is why a horse who has already won at seven, like R Disaster and Ways and Means, gets extra credit.
  • Why a separate race. Fillies and mares can also run against males in the 6-furlong Breeders' Cup Sprint, where they get a 3-pound allowance. Most stay with their own sex here.

What to watch next

  1. Saturday, Oct. 3: the Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland. Does Eclatant lock in a berth, or does a new name emerge?
  2. Monday, Oct. 19: pre-entries. Check that Ways and Means, R Disaster, Kerry's Kiss and Explora are all on the list, and whether anyone is cross-entered in the Distaff or the open Sprint.
  3. Wednesday, Oct. 21: the field announcement. If more than 14 pre-enter, this is when the rankings decide who is in and who is also-eligible.
  4. Monday, Oct. 26: the post position draw. At seven furlongs around one turn, an inside post saves ground, while a speed horse drawn wide has to work harder to clear the field.
  5. Saturday, Oct. 31: the race itself. Watch the break, who takes the lead into the turn, and whether Ways and Means can run them down in the stretch.

How long is the Filly & Mare Sprint?

Seven furlongs, or 7/8 of a mile (about 1,400 meters), on dirt around one turn. The race record is 1:20.20, set by Gamine at Keeneland in 2020.

Is R Disaster running in the Breeders' Cup?

Likely but not confirmed. After her Oct. 1 Gallant Bloom win, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said that, all being well, she will get a shot at the Breeders' Cup. She still has to be pre-entered by Oct. 19 and does not hold an automatic berth.

Who is Ways and Means?

A 5-year-old mare by Practical Joke owned by Klaravich Stables and trained by Chad Brown. She won the Grade 1 Ballerina at Saratoga on Aug. 29 by 5 1/2 lengths, which earned her a fees-paid spot in the Filly & Mare Sprint. Brown has said it is expected to be her final race before she sells as a broodmare prospect.

What is the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes?

A $400,000 Grade 2 for fillies and mares 3 and up at Keeneland, run Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, over 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt. It is a Breeders' Cup Win and You're In race: the winner gets an automatic, fees-paid spot in the Filly & Mare Sprint.

How does a horse qualify for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint?

By winning one of the three Challenge Series races (Ballerina, Princess Rooney, Thoroughbred Club of America) or by being pre-entered by Oct. 19 and ranked into the 14-horse field through graded-stakes points and a selection panel. Every runner must also be Breeders' Cup nominated.

Can fillies and mares run in the regular Breeders' Cup Sprint instead?

Yes. The 6-furlong Breeders' Cup Sprint is open to both sexes, and fillies and mares get a 3-pound weight allowance there. Most female sprinters choose the Filly & Mare Sprint, where they race only against other fillies and mares.
