What is the Breeders' Cup Sprint 2026?

The Breeders' Cup Sprint 2026 is a $2 million Grade 1 race over six furlongs (three-quarters of a mile) on dirt, run Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. It's the shortest dirt race on Breeders' Cup day, and Listenupshance already has a fees-paid spot in the starting gate.

He earned that spot by winning the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar on July 25, a "Win and You're In" race in the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series. He beat Maximum Bourbon by a nose that day. The Classic guide and Distaff guide explain how the qualifying system works in full.

Santa Anita Sprint Championship at a glance

On Sept. 27 he won again, this time in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, another Win and You're In race for the Sprint.

• Result: Listenupshance broke a little slowly, and the favorite, Maximum Bourbon, jumped out on top. Listenupshance rushed to the front within the first 100 yards, led the rest of the way and held off Maximum Bourbon by three-quarters of a length. March of Time was third, 2 1/4 lengths farther back.
• Time: 1:08.70 for six furlongs on a fast track. The first quarter mile took 21.98 seconds and the half mile 43.86.
• Team: jockey Emisael Jaramillo, trainer Doug O'Neill, owners Run Fast Racing and Great Friends Stables.
• Field: only three horses started. Imagination, who won this race in 2025, was scratched with an elevated temperature, and Ahrens was a vet scratch. Horse Racing Nation reported it was the smallest field in the race's history, which goes back to 1983.

Listenupshance: from $10,000 yearling to Keeneland

Listenupshance is a 4-year-old gelding (a castrated male) by Shancelot, out of the Hard Spun mare Listenupnow. Nothing about his start looked like a Breeders' Cup horse.

• 2023: he sold for $10,000 as a yearling at Fasig-Tipton's October sale in Kentucky. That's a bargain-bin price in Thoroughbred racing.
• July 2025: he won his first race ("broke his maiden") in a $20,000 maiden claimer at Del Mar. In a claiming race, any horse can be bought for the listed price, so it's a lower level of racing. His current owners then bought him privately.
• Late eligibility: he wasn't nominated to the Breeders' Cup program as a foal. DRF reports his owners paid a $100,000 supplemental fee to make him eligible.
• 2026: he won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby and the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship back to back. Not sure what the grades mean? See what a Grade 1 race is.

His career record now stands at 14 starts, 5 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds, with $558,570 in earnings. There's family history, too. His sire, Shancelot, finished second in both the 2019 Santa Anita Sprint Championship and the 2019 Breeders' Cup Sprint.

It's a good reminder that price tags don't pick winners.

How long is the Breeders' Cup Sprint? What a furlong is

A furlong is one-eighth of a mile: 220 yards, or about 201 meters. The word comes from "furrow long," the length of a plowed furrow in old English farm fields. American racing still measures races in furlongs.

A top-level six furlong race takes about 70 seconds. Listenupshance's 1:08.70 works out to an average of roughly 39 mph (63 km/h), and his first quarter mile was faster than that. The Classic is two-thirds longer, which changes everything about how it's run.

Why early speed and the gate matter in a six furlong race

In a sprint there's no time to fix a mistake. A horse who breaks a step slow can lose a length or two, and at this distance that's often the race.

What decides a sprint

• The break. The gates open and the first few strides set up everything. Jaramillo said Listenupshance had been acting up in the gate lately, but can reach his spot in about two strides once it opens.
• Early position. A horse who gets to the front or just behind the leader can take the shortest path around the turn. Horses stuck wide cover extra ground.
• The pace. If two or three speed horses battle for the lead, they can tire each other out. That sets the race up for a closer, a horse who waits at the back and runs late.
• The draw. Where a horse starts in the gate affects how easily it can get position. The post positions are drawn in the week before the race.

Three running styles to know

• Front-runner: goes straight to the lead and tries to hold on. That's Listenupshance's style.
• Stalker (presser): sits just behind the leaders, then pounces in the stretch.
• Closer: drops back early and makes one late run.

Sprinters vs Classic horses: what's the difference?

Sprinters and Classic horses are both Thoroughbreds, but they're built for different jobs. Think 100-meter runner versus 800-meter runner.

• Build: sprinters tend to be compact and heavily muscled through the hindquarters, built to accelerate. Distance horses are often leaner and rangier. Learn how muscles and legs work in our anatomy guide.
• Stamina: a Classic horse has to keep up a high cruising speed for 10 furlongs and still have a finishing kick. A sprinter goes close to flat out for the whole race.
• Pedigree: breeders look for speed in the family for sprinters and stamina for route horses. Shancelot was a fast sprinter himself.
• Career: many top sprinters are geldings like Listenupshance. Since they can't go to stud, they often race for several seasons, and fans get to know them.

• Win and You're In: a Challenge Series race whose winner gets a fees-paid spot in a matching Breeders' Cup race.
• Maiden: a horse that hasn't won a race yet.
• Claiming race: a race where every horse is for sale at a set price.
• Scratch: a horse withdrawn before the race.
• Wire to wire: leading from the start to the finish line.

What to watch next: your Oct. 31 checklist

The Sprint field isn't set yet. Other Win and You're In races, like the Vosburgh at Belmont Park, hand out their own spots, and final entries come in the week of the event. Maximum Bourbon, second to Listenupshance in both of those races, missed out on their automatic berths, and his Breeders' Cup plans haven't been confirmed.

When the race goes off, watch for these five things:

1. The break. Who's slow away? In a six furlong race, that horse is already behind.
2. The first quarter. Compare it with the 21.98 seconds Listenupshance ran at Santa Anita. If several horses go that fast while fighting for the lead, closers may get their chance.
3. Who's on the lead. Does Listenupshance get the front alone, or does another speed horse go with him?
4. The turn. Horses caught wide lose ground. Watch who saves ground on the rail.
5. The last furlong. Does the leader hold, or do the closers run him down?
