Breeders' Cup 2027: When and Where

Breeders' Cup 2027 is Friday, Oct. 29, and Saturday, Oct. 30, 2027, at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, just over the Queens line on Long Island. It will be the 44th Breeders' Cup, and the first in New York since 2005.

The 2026 edition closed at Keeneland on Oct. 31, so the clock is now running on New York. This page collects what's confirmed, and we'll update it as tickets and details arrive.

Belmont matters for a second reason. Since 2008, every Breeders' Cup has been in California or Kentucky. The last one anywhere else was Monmouth Park in New Jersey in 2007.

Confirmed so far:

  • Dates: Oct. 29-30, 2027
  • Host: Belmont Park, run by the New York Racing Association (NYRA)
  • Edition: 44th
  • Tickets: not on sale as of Nov. 1, 2026
  • Updates: sign up at BreedersCup.com/2027

How the Breeders' Cup Moves Between Tracks

The Breeders' Cup has no permanent home. It's a two-day championship that changes host, a bit like the Super Bowl. It began at Hollywood Park in California in 1984.

Hosts are usually named well ahead. Del Mar was announced for 2025 in November 2023. Keeneland (2026) and Belmont (2027) were announced together in May 2025, more than two years before Belmont's date.

Recent hosts have been Santa Anita, Churchill Downs, Keeneland and Del Mar. We found no 2028 host announcement as of Nov. 1, 2026.

The racing format has been steady: 14 Grade 1 championship races over two days. A Grade 1 is the top level of the sport. At Keeneland, Friday's five championship races were for 2-year-olds, and Saturday's nine ended with the Classic. The 2027 order hasn't been published.

Horses earn their way in through the year, including "Win and You're In" races. Belmont and Saratoga both hosted key races in that series in 2026, so New York fans may see 2027 contenders long before October.

The New Belmont Park: What's Finished and What Isn't

The old Belmont grandstand is gone. The new Belmont Park reopened for racing on Sept. 18, 2026, and it's a very different place from the giant building fans remember.

The building. The new five-story grandstand is about 275,000 to 300,000 square feet, depending on the source, down from about 1.25 million. Only the first two floors were open at the reopening. Floors 3-5 are expected to finish in the first quarter of 2027, according to NYRA and the governor's office, though some reports say spring.

The racing surfaces. There are four, which allows year-round racing:

  • A 1½-mile main dirt track
  • Two turf (grass) courses
  • A one-mile synthetic oval made of Tapeta, an all-weather surface

The AP also reported new drainage, robotic cameras on each marker pole and a 15-million-gallon infield pond for irrigation.

The infield. Fans can now reach the infield for the first time in Belmont's history, through pedestrian tunnels. Whether it will be open on Breeders' Cup days hasn't been announced.

The cost. You'll see two numbers. The $455 million figure in most reports is the state loan, which is to be repaid. The Times Union reported that NYRA added $100 million, which matches the $555 million project the governor's office describes. The AP reported about $550 million.

The crowd question. A smaller building raises an obvious question: where will everyone sit? NYRA hasn't published a Breeders' Cup seating plan or a capacity for the event, so we won't guess. Attendance has been capped on regular race days this fall while construction continues. Daily Racing Form reported that temporary structures will be built for events such as the Breeders' Cup.

Belmont's Breeders' Cup History

2027 will be Belmont's fifth Breeders' Cup and New York's sixth. The first New York edition was at Aqueduct in 1985.

Keeneland's Numbers: The Benchmark for Belmont

The 2026 totals give New York a target. These are the two-day figures from the Paulick Report's year-by-year history:

YearTrackAttendanceHandle
2026Keeneland81,604$167,930,278
2025Del Mar65,232$180,036,799
2024Del Mar67,418$179,218,631
2023Santa Anita109,624$176,281,989
2022Keeneland85,824$189,060,373

Keeneland drew 45,775 on Saturday and 35,829 on Friday. The two-day total is about 25% above Del Mar in 2025, but about 5% below Keeneland's own 2022 crowd.

What "handle" means

Handle is the total amount bet on the races. It isn't profit. Most of it goes back to winning bettors, and a slice funds tracks, purses and state taxes.

The industry watches handle because it's a broad sign of interest, and it feeds the prize money that keeps horses racing. "Common pool" means bets combined into the main shared pools. Betting figures from separate international pools weren't available yet when these totals came out.

Here's the useful detail. Total handle fell 6.72%, but handle on the 14 championship races fell only 1.2%, to $146,431,783. By our arithmetic, most of the drop of about $12 million came from the undercard, the other races on the program.

Track size and location shape these numbers, so compare them with care. A big crowd doesn't always mean big betting: Santa Anita drew 109,624 in 2023 and still handled less than Keeneland's 85,824 did in 2022.

This is a health check for the sport, not a guide to betting. Horse Academy doesn't give wagering advice.

Breeders' Cup 2027 Tickets: What We Know

Tickets aren't on sale, and no prices or on-sale date have been published. BreedersCup.com/2027 and NYRA's 2027 hub are the places to watch.

NYRA's sign-up form asks for your email, name, phone number and ZIP code. You'll also choose whether to get Breeders' Cup emails.

Keeneland offers a rough guide, not a promise. Tickets for 2026 went on sale to the public on April 21, 2026, about six months out. They were mobile-only, sold in advance through SeatGeek, with none sold at the track. Belmont's rules may differ, so wait for the official details.

How to Plan a Family Trip to Belmont

Now through spring 2027

  1. Sign up for ticket news at BreedersCup.com/2027.
  2. Mark Oct. 29-30, then choose your day. Friday features young horses, if the Keeneland format holds, and Saturday has been the bigger crowd.
  3. Look at flexible hotel options around Long Island, Queens or Manhattan.
  4. Scout the track on a normal race day. The fall meet runs through Dec. 6, 2026, and crowds are limited, so buy ahead.

When tickets open

  1. Read the rules on children, age limits and strollers before you buy.
  2. Buy only through the official links. Be wary of any seller offering 2027 seats before the official sale.
  3. Check which floors and areas your ticket includes.

Getting there

NYRA recommends the Long Island Rail Road to Elmont-UBS Arena station. The n6 bus is another option, and NYRA asks drivers to pre-book parking.

Those are this fall's arrangements. The 2027 transit plan hasn't been announced, so recheck before you travel.

On the day

  • Pack layers, because late October can feel cold at a track.
  • Bring ear protection for little ones if crowds and noise bother them.
  • Keep kids behind the rails. Never pet or feed racehorses.
  • Agree on a meeting spot before you enter. Our safety guide covers the basics around horses.

What to Watch Next

  • Through Dec. 6, 2026: Belmont's fall meet continues under limited attendance.
  • First quarter of 2027: the expected finish for grandstand floors 3-5.
  • June 5, 2027: the Belmont Stakes returns home after three years at Saratoga. It's the first giant crowd test before the Breeders' Cup, so watch how seating, trains and parking work.
  • Fall 2027: the Breeders' Cup Classic picture takes shape. It's too early to name 2027 runners.
  • Anytime: ticket details, race order and the 2028 host. We'll add them here when they're official.
