Juddmonte Spinster 2026: What's Happening Sunday
The Juddmonte Spinster 2026 is a $650,000 Grade 1 for fillies and mares at Keeneland on Sunday, Oct. 4, run at 1 1/8 miles on dirt with a post time of about 5:45 p.m. ET. It is the 71st running, and the headline is a 3-year-old, Counting Stars, meeting older rivals for the first time.
The Keeneland Spinster Stakes field is small but strong. Five horses are entered, and the winner gets a free ticket to the Breeders' Cup Distaff.
The Spinster Stakes field

Counting Stars is trained by Mark Casse and owned by West Point Thoroughbreds. Immersive is trained by Brad Cox, Fully Subscribed by Chad Brown, Regaled by Whit Beckman and Snowyte by Danny Gargan.
Why Counting Stars Is the Story
Counting Stars won the Acorn Stakes (G1) and the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1), both at Saratoga, by a combined 8 lengths. She was then third in the Alabama Stakes (G1). Those are the credentials of the leading 3-year-old filly, and this race is her chance to add to a championship case.
Immersive was the 2024 champion 2-year-old filly, with wins in the Alcibiades at Keeneland and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. Fully Subscribed won the Personal Ensign (G1) by 9 3/4 lengths, her first Grade 1 win.
Why Facing Older Horses Is a Big Step
Three things change when a 3-year-old takes on older fillies and mares.
- Weight. Counting Stars carries 121 pounds, four fewer than each older rival at 125. That allowance helps, but it is meant to offset more than just age.
- Experience. Older fillies and mares have more starts, have raced at many tracks and have been tested by tougher fields. A filly whose rivals so far were mostly her own age has not yet seen that.
- Maturity. A 4-year-old or older is usually physically more developed late in the year. A 3-year-old has been racing since spring and is in her long campaign's final stretch.
There is also the track. Keeneland's 1 1/8-mile dirt race has two turns, so jockeys have to place their horses early and save energy for the stretch. In a field of five, there is little traffic, so a good trip is mostly about pace and position.
What the Spinster Is and How It Feeds the Distaff
The Spinster dates to 1956 and is one of the major fall races for fillies and mares on dirt. It is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race, so the winner earns an automatic berth, plus entry fees, to the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) on Oct. 31 at the same track and distance.
We already explain how those qualifiers work in What Does 'Win and You're In' Mean?. For the bigger picture of the championship race, see our Breeders' Cup Distaff 2026 guide and the Breeders' Cup 2026 schedule.
How Fall Prep Stakes Work
Fall stakes are the bridge between the summer and the championships. Trainers use them to find out whether a horse still has her form, and owners use them to decide whether to enter the big race.
- Spacing. Four weeks between the Spinster and the Distaff gives a horse time to recover and still keep fit.
- Same track, same distance. Running at Keeneland at 1 1/8 miles now gives a horse a look at the surface she will see on Oct. 31.
- Not mandatory. Winning is not the only way in. Some runners skip the prep, and a good second can still go on to the big race.
- Grade 1 status. The grade signals the quality of the race. If you are new to this, read What Is a Grade 1 Race?.
What to Watch Sunday
- The early pace. Who goes to the front, and does anyone challenge her? A slow pace helps horses that sit just behind.
- Counting Stars' position. Does she stay close or drop back to save energy in her first race against older rivals?
- The turn for home. The older fillies and mares have more racing behind them, so watch who finishes strongest in the final furlong.
- How the winner looks afterward. Connections often talk about the Distaff right after the race. Nothing is confirmed until entries and the field are set.
