Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint 2026: Nobals, the Woodford and Keeneland

Keeneland's Woodford Stakes is the marquee turf sprint prep over the Breeders' Cup course before Oct. 31, but it doesn't hand out a ticket. Here's who's in it, why the 2023 champion skipped it, and how a 5½-furlong grass race is won.

Updated 7 min read

Keeneland runs the $400,000 Woodford Stakes (G2T) on Fall Stars Saturday, Oct. 3, over the same 5½-furlong turf course that hosts the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on Oct. 31. 2023 Turf Sprint winner Nobals was drawn in but scratched, and he was also entered at Woodbine the same afternoon.

TL;DR

  • The Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (G1) is Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, at Keeneland: $1 million, 5½ furlongs on turf, for 3-year-olds and up, with a 14-horse maximum.
  • The Woodford Stakes (G2T) on Oct. 3 is the over-the-course prep, but it is not a Win and You're In race. Winning it earns graded stakes points, not an automatic berth.
  • Nobals, the 2023 Turf Sprint winner, scratched from the Woodford. He was cross-entered in Woodbine's Nearctic Stakes (G2T) the same day.
  • Pre-entries close at noon ET on Oct. 19, the field is announced Oct. 21, and the post-position draw is Oct. 26.
  • At 5½ furlongs there is almost no time to recover, so a clean break, early position and a ground-saving trip around Keeneland's single turn matter a lot.

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint 2026: what's happening at Keeneland

The Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint 2026 is a $1 million Grade 1 race at 5½ furlongs on the grass, run Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky. Today, Oct. 3, Keeneland runs the $400,000 Woodford Stakes (G2T) at the exact same distance and on the same turf course, which makes it the marquee over-the-course rehearsal for the championship.

The Woodford is race 6 on the Fall Stars Saturday card, with a scheduled post time of 3:40 p.m. ET. Ten horses were drawn for the 3-year-olds-and-up race.

The result is not official as of publication. We'll update this story once the chart is posted rather than guess.

Who was drawn into the Woodford

  • Joe Shiesty (trainer Eric Foster, jockey Fernando De La Cruz), the 5-2 morning-line favorite
  • Doncho (trainer Michelle Lovell), ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. in one of his first rides back from an injury that had sidelined him since Aug. 8 at Saratoga
  • Motorious (GB) (trainer Philip D'Amato, jockey Umberto Rispoli)
  • My Boy Prince (trainer Mark Casse, jockey Luis Saez), carrying top weight of 125 pounds
  • No Nay Hudson (IRE) for Wesley Ward, a trainer famous for fast turf sprinters
  • Nobals, the 2023 Turf Sprint winner, who has since been scratched

BloodHorse describes Joe Shiesty, Motorious and My Boy Prince as stakes-winning millionaires. Several runners are coming off defeats, which is why the race was billed as a chance for Grade 1 winners to rebound.

Why Nobals scratched, and what it means

Nobals, trained by Larry Rivelli, won the 2023 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita at 12-1 under Gerardo Corrales. He has earned more than $1.9 million. According to BloodHorse, he went 3-for-16 after that win, including 0-for-3 in 2026.

He was cross-entered: drawn into both the Woodford and the Nearctic Stakes (G2T), a 6-furlong turf race at Woodbine in Toronto on the same afternoon. Keeneland's official scratch list shows him out of the Woodford. Cross-entering lets a trainer keep two options open and pick the better spot once the fields and conditions are known.

What it means for Oct. 31: nothing is settled yet. A past champion still has to be pre-entered, and if the race is oversubscribed he has to rank high enough to get in (see below).

The Woodford is not a Win and You're In race

This is the part that trips people up. Many big fall races are Breeders' Cup Challenge races, also called Win and You're In. The winner gets a guaranteed, fees-paid spot in a matching Breeders' Cup race. You can read more in our explainer on Win and You're In races.

The Woodford isn't one of them: Keeneland's 2026 stakes schedule doesn't mark it as a Win and You're In race. Turf Sprint qualifiers this year have included the Jaipur Stakes at Saratoga on June 6, won by Reef Runner, and the Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint on Sept. 5.

How horses actually get into the Turf Sprint

  1. Be nominated. Every runner must be Breeders' Cup nominated. Most are nominated as weanlings. A horse that wasn't can be supplemented for $100,000 or $200,000, depending on whether its sire was nominated.
  2. Pre-enter by noon ET, Monday, Oct. 19. The Turf Sprint pre-entry fee is $15,000.
  3. Survive field selection if more than 14 pre-enter. Challenge race winners go first. Next come the horses with the most graded stakes points, until about half the field is filled. A panel of racing secretaries and international handicappers ranks the rest.
  4. Check the order on Wednesday, Oct. 21, when Breeders' Cup announces the selections.
  5. Enter by 10 a.m. ET on Monday, Oct. 26, with another $15,000 entry fee. Up to four also-eligibles can wait in line for a scratch.
  6. Draw. Post positions are drawn that afternoon at 4 p.m. ET in Keeneland's sales pavilion.

So a Woodford win still matters. It adds graded stakes points and gives the panel fresh proof of form over this exact course.

What the Turf Sprint is

The Turf Sprint was added to the Breeders' Cup in 2008 and has been a Grade 1 since 2012. It's for horses 3 and up, and the distance changes with the host track: anywhere from 5 to 6½ furlongs.

2026 detailWhat it is
DateSaturday, Oct. 31
Distance5½ furlongs (1,100 meters) on turf
Purse$1 million ($520,000 to the winner)
WeightsNorthern Hemisphere-breds: 126 lb for 4-year-olds and up, 124 lb for 3-year-olds; fillies and mares get 3 lb off

A furlong is an eighth of a mile, or about 201 meters. At 5½ furlongs, top turf sprinters finish in a little over a minute. When Keeneland last hosted, Glass Slippers won in 1:01.53 (2020) and Caravel in 1:01.79 (2022).

Recent winners

  • 2025: Shisospicy
  • 2024: Starlust (GB)
  • 2023: Nobals
  • 2022: Caravel, at Keeneland
  • 2021: Golden Pal
  • 2020: Glass Slippers (GB), at Keeneland

Golden Pal also won the Woodford in 2021 and 2022, a good reminder that this prep and the championship reward the same kind of horse.

Why 5½ furlongs on turf favors speed and post position

In a 1¼-mile race, a horse that stumbles at the start has two minutes to recover. In a 5½-furlong race it has about 60 seconds, and the shape of the race is often set in the first 20.

What makes turf sprints different

  • The break is everything. A slow step out of the gate can cost two lengths, and the field rarely slows down enough to give them back.
  • Early position wins. Horses that settle in the first few spots avoid traffic. Closers need a clear lane at exactly the right moment.
  • Ground loss adds up. Every horse wider than the leaders on a turn runs extra distance. In a race decided by a neck, that can be the difference.
  • Post position matters more. A horse drawn far outside has to choose: use energy to cut across early, or accept a wide trip. A horse drawn inside risks getting boxed in.
  • Crowded fields. With up to 14 starters, bumping and blocked runs are common, which is why turf sprints produce upsets like Caravel's at about 42-1 in 2022.

How Keeneland's turf course plays

Keeneland's grass course is a 7½-furlong oval inside the 1 1/16-mile dirt track. The Breeders' Cup course map shows the 5½-furlong turf start on the backstretch. Horses run a short straight, one sweeping turn, then the homestretch to the finish.

That single turn is where a lot of the race is won. Horses that save ground on the rail and swing out cleanly at the top of the stretch have an edge. Keeneland can also move a temporary rail out about 15 feet, which shifts where the fresher grass is and how tight the turn feels.

Fall in Kentucky adds another variable. Rain can turn firm turf to good or yielding, which tends to slow times and can help horses that handle softer ground, including many European shippers. Fields are announced with an official turf condition, so check it on race day.

What to watch next

Here's a simple timeline for following the race as it forms. For the full card, see our Breeders' Cup 2026 guide and our Keeneland fall meet guide.

  • Oct. 3: The official Woodford chart. Look at who broke well, who was wide and who finished fastest, not just who won.
  • Oct. 3: Woodbine's Nearctic Stakes, if Nobals runs there.
  • Oct. 19: Pre-entries close. This is the first real list of Turf Sprint hopefuls, including any European shippers.
  • Oct. 21: Breeders' Cup announces field selection for oversubscribed races.
  • Oct. 26: Entries close and the post-position draw sets the gates.
  • Oct. 31: Race day. Check the turf condition and the scratches.

A quick checklist for new fans

  • Learn the terms in our glossary: morning line, also-eligible, scratch, chart.
  • Compare it with the dirt version in our Breeders' Cup Sprint 2026 story.
  • Watch the replay of a Keeneland turf sprint and track one horse through the turn.
  • Follow the post-position draw on Oct. 26. In this race, the gate a horse draws really is part of the story.

We're not making picks here. The goal is to help you watch the race and understand why it plays out the way it does.
