Victoria Derby 2026: Stormy Marco wins by two lengths

Stormy Marco won the Victoria Derby 2026 at Flemington on Saturday, Oct. 31, beating Cold Shower by two lengths under James McDonald for trainer Chris Waller. The colt by Wootton Bassett started the $4.40 favourite from barrier 14 and gave Waller his fourth Derby.

It was a first Group 1 for the colt and only his second win from eight starts. Seven days earlier he had run fourth in the 2000m Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick.

Cold Shower started at $101. Quick Finish, at $21, finished 3¼ lengths from the winner. Sixteen horses ran, in the first A$3 million Derby.

How the race was won

The wide draw looked like a problem and turned into a help. McDonald told reporters that an inside barrier would have meant niggling to hold a spot to the first corner, and that this colt was better left to relax.

So he rode him quietly early, let him improve through the race, and hit the front at about the 300m mark. From there the colt drew clear.

The beaten jockeys told the same story from the other side. Several said their horses got keen on an uneven tempo, or simply did not see out the trip. Jett Stanley called Cold Shower a true stayer, but said the winner had a turn of foot he could not match.

Second Derby or third?

You may see McDonald credited with a third Derby. Both counts can be right, because they measure different things. The VRC's Group 1 Honour Board shows him on Riff Rocket in 2023 and on no other Victoria Derby winner from 2010 to 2025, and the VRC race report and Racing Victoria both call this his second.

The VRC's day wrap says third Group 1 Derby, adding It's A Dundeel in 2013. That colt won the Australian Derby at Randwick. Polanski, under Hugh Bowman, won the Victoria Derby that year. So: two Victoria Derbies for McDonald, three Group 1 Derbies by the VRC's wider count.

Waller's four are Preferment (2014), Manzoice (2022), Riff Rocket (2023) and Stormy Marco.

What is the Victoria Derby?

The Victoria Derby is a Group 1 race for three-year-olds over 2500m at Flemington in Melbourne. It dates to 1855, and the VRC calls it Australia's oldest classic.

Three things make it different from most big Australian races:

  • Age limit. Only three-year-olds can run, so each horse gets one chance.
  • Set weights. There is no handicapping for past wins. This year colts carried 57kg and the filly 55kg.
  • Distance. It began at about a mile and a half, the distance of the English Derby at Epsom, and has been 2500m since 1973.

New to the terms? The glossary covers the basics, and our Cox Plate guide explains how three-year-olds fare against older horses.

Why 2500m is a stamina question for young horses

Australian Thoroughbreds turn a year older on Aug. 1, so a Derby horse in October has barely begun its three-year-old season. Plenty of them have never raced this far.

That makes the race an honest question with no practice run. A young horse can have speed and class and still run out of petrol in a long straight.

Waller put it simply before the race: they have to be very fit to run 2500m in the Derby. He also said Stormy Marco's breeding suggested he could get the trip. The Spring Champion was his lead-up run, the same path Manzoice took before winning in 2022.

A short turnaround like this is a stable's call, based on how the individual horse comes through its last run. It is not a formula that suits every three-year-old.

How to read a Derby result

Stamina shows up in more than the finishing order. When you watch a replay, check:

  • Did the horse settle? Pulling hard early burns energy it needs late.
  • Where was the move made? A long sustained run says more than a burst.
  • Who was still finishing? Murshidi's rider said he stayed on well after a tough run, which is worth noting for later.
  • What did the jockeys say? Their post-race comments often flag horses that need another preparation.

The filly, and the history she chased

Quick Finish was the first filly in the Derby since Lycra ran fourth in 1990. Fillies won the first three runnings, and 14 have won it in all.

The last was Frances Tressady in 1923, so the record still stands. Even so, third in a Group 1 against the colts is a serious run. Before the race the VRC said she also remained in contention for Thursday's Crown Oaks.

How Derby Day opens the Melbourne Cup Carnival

The Derby has held its Saturday spot before the Melbourne Cup since 1869. It opens four days of racing, and the VRC reported a crowd of 88,146 this year.

Thirteen horses have won the Derby and the Melbourne Cup in the same season, the last of them Skipton in 1941. Modern three-year-olds rarely attempt it, so today the Derby works more as a first look at future stayers. Phar Lap, the race's most famous winner, took it in 1929.

The rest of Derby Day

  • Empire Rose Stakes (G1, 1600m, Flemington). Lady Shenandoah won by 1½ lengths from Concord Connie for Waller and McDonald, her fifth Group 1.
  • Coolmore Stud Stakes (G1, 1200m, Flemington). The Next Episode won for Ciaron Maher and Mark Zahra.
  • Golden Eagle (G1, 1500m, Randwick). Skyhook, trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, beat Decorum by a nose in a photo, with Beiwacht third and favourite Sheza Alibi 11th. Chad Schofield rode in place of Kerrin McEvoy, who was suspended.

The Empire Rose also had a fall. Harry Coffey came off Pondalowie in the straight in the Empire Rose and went to hospital with a suspected collarbone injury. Veterinary stewards reported the mare was uninjured. Our explainer on falls covers what happens next in cases like this.

What to watch next

All of this is still to come:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 3: Melbourne Cup. The 24-horse field is set, and our Cup guide covers the build-up, including Point Of Law.
  • Coffey's fitness. He was booked for Shockletz in the Cup, and that depends on further medical checks.
  • Thursday, Nov. 5: Crown Oaks. The 2500m classic for three-year-old fillies is the natural next test at this trip.
  • Saturday, Nov. 7: Stakes Day. The carnival closes at Flemington.
  • Stormy Marco's next start. The reports we read named no target. McDonald thought the colt could have been a Guineas horse, while Charlie Duckworth, speaking for the stable, said he is so calm at home you could picture him as a Melbourne Cup type. On race days he gets more excited.
