Who Is Point Of Law? The King's Former Horse Is Now Melbourne Cup Favourite

At his fifth start and first in Australia, the royal homebred won the Geelong Cup under a jockey who had never ridden him. Next stop: Flemington on November 3.

A bay racehorse with a white star and a jockey in purple and red silks gallops clear of two rivals on green turf beside a white rail.

Point Of Law won the Geelong Cup on October 21, took a Melbourne Cup Golden Ticket and, per the VRC, became Cup favourite 13 days before the race. The royal back story has drawn in fans well beyond racing.

TL;DR

  • Point Of Law won the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) by a half-length on October 21, 2026, at his fifth start and first in Australia.
  • He was bred and raced by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, won the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy, and was sold in August to clients of trainer Ciaron Maher.
  • The win is a Golden Ticket: a guaranteed, ballot-exempt place in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday, November 3.
  • International horses from Werribee quarantine ran 1-2-3, with Joseph O'Brien's Small Fry and Omni Man behind him.
  • Most reports describe him as a colt (not gelded), though one VRC report calls him a gelding.

Who is Point Of Law?

The Point Of Law racehorse is a Frankel colt, bred and raced in England by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who won the Group 3 Geelong Cup on October 21, 2026, and is now favourite for the Melbourne Cup. He has had only five starts, and this was his first in Australia since his sale to clients of trainer Ciaron Maher in August.

His story has everything that makes the Melbourne Cup fun to follow. He has a royal breeder, a famous sire, a big-name Australian trainer and a jockey who first rode him on race day. He also has a guaranteed spot in the field.

Point Of Law at a glance

  • Sire: Frankel, the unbeaten champion of 14 races
  • Dam: Portfolio, a Listed-placed daughter of Deep Impact; he is her first named foal
  • Bred by: the King, as a royal homebred
  • Trained in England by: John and Thady Gosden
  • Trained in Australia by: Ciaron Maher
  • Age: three in Europe, four on Australian racecards (more on that below)

Colt or gelding?

Sources disagree, so we checked. The Straight's August sale report, Breednet and the Surf Coast Times all call him a colt, which means he has not been gelded. One VRC report on the race calls him a gelding.

The colt description is the majority view among breeding and race-day reports, and it is what we use here. If it matters to you, the official form guide on race day is the final word.

How Point Of Law won the Geelong Cup 2026

The A$500,000 Geelong Cup is a 2400m staying handicap run on a Wednesday in late October. Point Of Law won by a half-length under Ethan Brown. Joseph O'Brien's Small Fry was second and Omni Man third.

All three had been prepared at the Werribee quarantine centre, so the overseas horses ran 1-2-3. Point Of Law had arrived on the first shipment of spring horses from the UK in September.

Brown had not ridden him before parading to the gates. He told reporters there was early pressure and the horse was keen, so he let him find his rhythm and settled him outside the leader. It was Maher's first Geelong Cup after several second placings, including with Gilded Water last year, and he described Point Of Law as a progressive horse who takes some managing.

Why it was his first Australian run

Maher bought him with the Caulfield Cup (October 17) as the first target. Point Of Law was listed as an emergency for that race, but he did not get a start and was scratched on race morning, so Geelong became his Australian debut four days later.

Point Of Law racehorse: the royal background

Point Of Law is a homebred for the King. Before the sale he raced in the colours of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, with the Gosdens in Newmarket.

2Maiden, Newbury, 2000mWon
3Queen's Vase (G2), Royal Ascot4th
4Bahrain Trophy (G3), Newmarket, July 9Won
5Geelong Cup (G3), October 21Won

The Bahrain Trophy is a roughly 2600m race at Newmarket's July Festival, and a common stepping stone for young stayers. He won it on the pace, which made him a candidate for the St Leger, England's oldest classic.

Instead, in August the King and Queen sold him to an ownership group of Maher's clients. The price was not disclosed. The King's racing adviser, John Warren, said the King and Queen would enjoy following his career in Australia.

Why he is "three" and "four" at the same time

Racehorses share an official birthday. In Europe it is January 1. In Australia it is August 1, and Northern Hemisphere horses racing there are aged under local rules, which is why Australian cards list him as a four-year-old. The horse is the same; only the counting changes.

Why the Geelong Cup is a classic Melbourne Cup lead-up

The Geelong Cup dates to 1872 and is run 13 days before the Melbourne Cup. That gap is ideal for a stayer: one solid 2400m run, then two weeks to recover and sharpen for 3200m.

It has a strong record as a guide. Media Puzzle (2002), Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011) won both races in the same year, and all three were international horses.

For imports, it also solves a practical problem. It is close to Werribee, and as a handicap it lets lightly raced horses run under weights set by the handicapper. For more on the big spring races, see our guides to the Caulfield Cup 2026 and the Cox Plate 2026.

What a Golden Ticket (ballot exemption) means

The Melbourne Cup field is capped at 24. When more horses want to run, the VRC ranks them in an order of entry, and those at the bottom are "balloted out".

A Golden Ticket skips that queue. The winner of each designated race is ballot-exempt, which means a guaranteed start if connections accept. For 2026 there are 11 Golden Ticket races:

  • Australia: Roy Higgins, Andrew Ramsden, Archer Stakes, Bart Cummings, Caulfield Cup, Geelong Cup, Moonee Valley Gold Cup and Cox Plate
  • Overseas: the Belmont Gold Cup (USA), the Ebor (York) and the Prix Kergorlay (Deauville)

Point Of Law's ticket is the ninth of the 11. The VRC says the Geelong Cup has been a Golden Ticket race for two years.

The ticket guarantees a place, not a weight. He was allotted 51kg before Geelong and is eligible for a rehandicap after the win, so his Cup weight may rise. Our Melbourne Cup 2026 guide explains the full acceptance-and-ballot process.

How overseas stayers use Werribee quarantine

This part of the story lasts well beyond Cup day. Horses flying in from Europe can't just land and race. They go into post-arrival quarantine at the Werribee International Horse Centre, about 30km from central Melbourne.

Racing Victoria describes it as the only approved post-arrival quarantine facility in Melbourne where horses can stay in full training. It has three separate compounds with room for 32 horses, so different shipments can be housed separately.

The international checklist

  1. Before leaving home: vet inspections by Racing Victoria-appointed vets and a CT scan of the lower limbs, paid for by connections.
  2. Pre-export quarantine in an approved facility, then the flight.
  3. Arrival at Werribee: training continues on site, with Racing Victoria vets doing regular checks.
  4. Before a big race: a pre-race CT scan and official vet inspection before each start in the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

These rules were tightened to protect horse welfare after injuries in past carnivals. They are also why a "first Australian start" from Werribee, like Point Of Law's, is closely watched.

What to watch next before November 3

Nothing about the Melbourne Cup itself has been decided yet. Here's the timeline to follow.

  • Recovery: Maher said he hoped the colt would pull up well. Watch for trackwork and vet reports.
  • Rehandicap: whether his 51kg goes up after the win.
  • October 24: the last two Golden Tickets, at the Moonee Valley Gold Cup and the Cox Plate.
  • October 29-30 and November 2: Racing Victoria's pre-race vet inspections for Melbourne Cup runners.
  • Late October: final field and barrier draw.
  • Tuesday, November 3: the A$10.2 million Melbourne Cup over 3200m at Flemington.

Favourites can drift or firm before the Cup, and Horse Academy doesn't give betting advice. The useful thing to watch is the horse: how he recovers, what weight he gets and his barrier. New to racing terms? Our glossary and our explainer on what a Group 1 race is will help.
