Ethan Brown, the jockey from Alice Springs, won the 166th Melbourne Cup at Flemington on Tuesday 3 November 2026 (still Monday evening, 2 November, in the US, Mexico and Central America), steering Ciaron Maher's Point Of Law home in Australia's most famous handicap.
It was Brown's first Cup win. ABC News called it a magical moment for the lad from Alice Springs, and he told the Nine Network: "Please don't wake me up."
Who rode Point Of Law in the Melbourne Cup?
Ethan Brown rode Point Of Law to win the 2026 Melbourne Cup. He is a Victorian-based jockey from Alice Springs in the Northern Territory and one of trainer Ciaron Maher's go-to riders.
Here is the race in short, from ABC News live coverage:
- Winner: Point Of Law (trainer Ciaron Maher, jockey Ethan Brown)
- Second: Zahrann
- Third: Juja Kibo
- Fourth: Sons And Lovers
- Maher's day: he trained the first three home
Point Of Law was having only his sixth career start. Maher's stable had bought him from King Charles only a few months earlier (full horse profile here). One pre-race note: Chris Waller's Asterix was scratched on race morning after stewards found a liniment had been applied in the stable.
Brown's race plan was simple: stay cool, stay patient and cut the bend. ABC's coverage called the horse's turn of foot enormous.
From Alice Springs to Flemington: Ethan Brown's early years
Alice Springs is about 1,900 km from Melbourne, in the red centre of Australia. Brown found racing at the town's Pioneer Racecourse, where he spent much of his time before and after school.
At 15, around 2015, he left home for Melbourne to become an apprentice jockey.
The Mick Kent years
In Victoria he was indentured to trainer Mick Kent at Cranbourne, and the move paid off quickly.
Late in the 2017-18 season, Brown:
- Had 48 Melbourne city wins and was chasing 50
- Had won the apprentices' title, 19 wins clear of his nearest rival
- Was third in the overall Melbourne jockeys' premiership, behind Craig Williams and Damian Lane
He did that while still an apprentice. He said at the time that he had exceeded his expectations but had the right support.
How an apprenticeship works in Australia
Brown's path is the standard Australian route, just done faster than most. If you are new to racing, here is how it works.
- Indentures. An apprentice is signed to a licensed trainer, called their master. The trainer employs and mentors them, often houses them, and can arrange rides.
- Training program. State racing bodies run apprentice schools covering riding, fitness, weight management, rules and race tactics.
- Weight claim. Apprentices carry a weight allowance, so a horse carries less with them aboard. That makes trainers keen to book them.
- Losing the claim. The allowance shrinks as the apprentice rides more winners, especially in city races. Once it is gone, they compete on equal terms.
- Graduation. When the apprenticeship ends, the rider becomes a senior jockey and finds rides on reputation alone.

The fall and the comeback with Ciaron Maher
On 4 March 2023, Brown fell from Maximillius about 300 metres from the finish of the Australian Guineas at Flemington. He needed emergency surgery and spent months out of racing.
He considered quitting. ABC News reported that Ciaron Maher talked him into coming back, and from 2024 he rode mostly for Maher's stable.
The results followed:
- Six Group 1 wins in the 2024-25 season, according to ABC News
- Jimmysstar: Group 1 wins including the Oakleigh Plate and C F Orr Stakes, and third in The Everest in 2025
- Middle Earth: third in the 2025 Melbourne Cup for Maher
- Hong Kong: a late-season stint in the 2025-26 Hong Kong season, with the Jockey Club releasing him to fly back for a Jimmysstar ride
After the Cup, Brown thanked Maher, saying the trainer had done nothing but support and back him. For a rider who once wondered if he would race again, the words mattered.
How a jockey gets a Melbourne Cup ride
Only 24 horses can start in the Cup, so rides are scarce. The trainer and owners choose the jockey, often well before race day.
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Stable link | Big stables use trusted riders across many runners |
| Weight | The rider must make the horse's handicap weight |
| Form with the horse | A winning partnership is rarely broken |
| Availability | One jockey, one horse, so choices must be made |
Brown's route to Point Of Law
Brown had never ridden Point Of Law before the Geelong Cup on 21 October 2026. He sat outside the leader, the horse won by half a length, and that Group 3 win gave Point Of Law automatic entry to the Melbourne Cup.
The next day Racing Victoria's handicapper raised the horse from 51 kg to 53 kg. Light Cup weights mean a rider has to manage his own weight carefully: in late September Brown told SEN he was riding at around 55 kg on Saturdays and had started working down to 53.5 kg, the weight SEN then said Zahrann was set to carry in the Caulfield Cup. In the race itself, on 17 October, Zahrann carried 53 kg under Brown and finished sixth.
Stable riders also face choices. At that point Brown was booked on Zahrann for the Caulfield Cup, run the same day as The Everest, where Jimmysstar might also need him. On Melbourne Cup day he rode Point Of Law, and Zahrann finished second.
What winning the Cup means for a jockey
The Melbourne Cup is the race casual fans in Australia know by name. A win puts a rider's name on the honor roll for good.
In practical terms it tends to bring:
- Profile: more owners and trainers notice you
- Bookings: better rides in big races, at home and overseas
- Earnings: jockeys typically receive a percentage of prize money, so a race this rich is a career highlight financially too
For Brown, it also caps a comeback. He went from a teenage apprentice far from home, to a serious injury, to the biggest stage in Australian racing.
