FEI Jumping World Cup 2026: where the season stands

The FEI Jumping World Cup 2026/27 season is underway: Switzerland's Beat Mändli and the 10-year-old mare Qoachella won the North American League opener at the American Gold Cup in Michigan on Sept. 20. The next qualifier is in Puebla, Mexico, where the World Cup class is set for Saturday, Oct. 3, and organizers say entry is free.

Theirs was the only double-clear round of the day, from a horse jumping her first World Cup qualifier. Mändli now leads the North American League with 20 points.

American Gold Cup 2026 results: how Mändli and Qoachella won

The $340,000 class at Flintfields Horse Park was the final class of Traverse City's 12 international shows this year, and it drew 37 starters. Irish course designer Alan Wade built a technical first round with a tight time allowed, and only five pairs finished it without penalties.

In the jump-off, Mändli rode a careful, confidence-building round instead of chasing the clock, and went clear in 38.03 seconds. Two faster riders each had a rail down:

1. Beat Mändli (SUI), Qoachella: clear, 38.03 seconds
2. Shane Sweetnam (IRL), James Kann Cruz: 4 faults, 35.61 seconds
3. Christian Kukuk (GER), Akarad Tivoli Z: 4 faults, 37.68 seconds

The two biggest American names were caught by the clock. Reigning World Cup champion Kent Farrington (Greya) and McLain Ward (Jordan Molga M) each finished just 0.07 seconds over the time allowed in round one and tied for sixth.

Why this win stands out

• It was Qoachella's first World Cup qualifier and her first five-star grand prix.
• It was only her second class at 1.60 meters, the height of top-level grand prix jumping.
• She is a Belgian Warmblood owned by Grand Road Partners LLC.
• Mändli, 57, is a former world No. 1 who won the 2007 World Cup Final in Las Vegas on Ideo du Thot. He said afterward that he wasn't thinking about the win; he wanted a good round and a more confident mare.

Earlier in the week, Canada's Erynn Ballard won two speed classes.

Next stop: the World Cup qualifier in Puebla, Mexico

Puebla hosts the second of the league's seven qualifiers. Organizers say the show runs over two weeks, Sept. 23–27 and Sept. 30–Oct. 4, with the World Cup grand prix on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Local reports put the entries at 300 to 350 riders and more than 600 horses from 13 countries, including Mexico, the U.S., Canada, Argentina and Ireland. The venue is Quintas Ecuestres, near the city of Puebla, and the field includes Olympic riders from Mexico and Argentina.

It is the league's only stop in Mexico, and it matters most to Mexican riders, because the league sets aside two places at the Final for Mexico.

If you're going in person

• Entry: free and open to the public, according to the organizing committee.
• Pick your day: the World Cup class on Oct. 3 is the headline. Weekday classes are calmer and great for first-timers and kids.
• Bring: sun protection, water and comfortable shoes. Show grounds mean a lot of walking.
• Around horses: stay out of warm-up rings and horse walkways, keep children close and always ask before touching a horse.
• In the stands: stay quiet while a horse is on course, skip the camera flash and save your applause for the finish.

What is a World Cup qualifier? Show jumping explained

Show jumping is the Olympic discipline where horse and rider jump a set course of colorful fences, built so the rails fall if a horse hits them, against the clock. A World Cup qualifier is a top grand prix, usually over fences up to 1.60 meters, that also pays points toward the Final.

The Longines FEI Jumping World Cup divides the world into regional leagues. Riders collect points at qualifiers in their league, and the best move on to a single Final each spring. The very first Final was held in Gothenburg in 1979, so 2027 is a homecoming.

How faults work

Under FEI rules:

• Rail down: 4 faults.
• First refusal (the horse stops or runs past a fence): 4 faults.
• Second refusal: elimination.
• Fall of horse or rider: elimination.
• Over the time allowed: time faults, even for a fraction of a second, as Farrington and Ward found out.

What a jump-off is

Riders who finish the first round with zero faults come back for a shorter, tighter course. Fewest faults wins, and the clock only breaks ties. That's why Mändli's slower clear round beat Sweetnam's faster round with one rail.

How points lead to the Final in Gothenburg

Each qualifier pays league points by placing: the winner gets 20, and riders further down the results earn fewer on a sliding scale. When the North American League ends, only a rider's best four results count.

The 2027 jumping Final runs March 24–28 at the Scandinavium arena in Gothenburg, Sweden, as part of the Gothenburg Horse Show (March 22–28), which was first held in 1977 and turns 50 in 2027. Kent Farrington arrives as defending champion after winning in Fort Worth in April 2026.

The 2026/27 North American League calendar

The Los Angeles leg takes place at the official 2028 Olympic equestrian venue. Ocala closes the league in February, when the last places at the Final are settled.

Where Spruce Meadows fits

If your feed was full of show jumping earlier this month, that was Spruce Meadows, not the World Cup. The CSIO5* Masters near Calgary is a Rolex Grand Slam major, part of a separate series of the sport's richest grand prix classes, and it doesn't award World Cup points.

On Sept. 13, Britain's Ben Maher and Enjeu de Grisien won the multimillion-dollar CPKC 'International', presented by Rolex, edging Lillie Keenan (USA) in the jump-off. Germany's Richard Vogel had a shot at a third straight Grand Slam major, but a rail in the jump-off ended it.

Many of the same stars ride both circuits. Think of the majors as the sport's biggest one-day prizes, and the World Cup as a season-long race to one Final.
