The venue is the grounds of the Asociación Civil del Caballo y la Tradición on provincial route 1, the road toward Apóstoles. Agromisiones puts it about 1.5 km from the junction of routes 14 and 105.

Why San José hosts a provincial horse festival
A provincial law (Ley VI-N° 226, passed Sept. 26, 2019) named San José the permanent home of the Fiesta Provincial del Caballo. The organizing association formed in 2016 and later got its own 3-hectare site near town, according to a 2024 resolution filed in Argentina's national Chamber of Deputies.
The festival has grown quickly. The 9th edition, held Oct. 12-13, 2024, drew more than 3,000 visitors, including people from Brazil and Paraguay, and about 500 horses, according to that same filing.
It also shows how horse health shapes these events. The festival skipped 2023 because SENASA, Argentina's animal health agency, did not authorize it over a horse disease, according to the same filing. That was the year of Argentina's western equine encephalomyelitis outbreak: in late November 2023 the Argentine Polo Association postponed tournaments and the Criollo breeders' association suspended its official activities, La Nación reported.
What is a tropilla?
A tropilla is a group of horses, traditionally geldings, that follows one lead mare, the madrina. She wears a cencerro (bell), and the horses learn to stay with the sound of their own bell.
The classic tropilla matches by coat color: all bays, all grays or all paints. Often one horse breaks the pattern on purpose, and gauchos call that horse the lunar. (Brush up on coat names in our coat colors guide.)
Tropillas began on the pampas as a practical tool. A gaucho covering long distances rode one horse a day while the rest trotted along behind the mare, so every horse got rest days.
What happens at a tropilla gathering
- The entrevero (mix): in contests, many tropillas are penned together and mixed, then let out. Each handler uses their madrina to call their own horses back within a time limit.
- The jineteada string: at rodeo-style festivals, "tropilla" also means a contractor's string of reservados, horses kept specifically for bucking. The 2024 San José program billed its tropilla meet as the best reservados of the Litoral region.
- Training: tropilla breeders say consistency matters more than long sessions. Short daily work keeps the group following the mare.
What a prueba de riendas judges
Riendas means reins, and the prueba de riendas tests how well a horse answers the rider's hands, seat and legs. Think quick, balanced turns, clean stops and steady control at speed.
Formats vary by event:
- Regional festivals like San José usually run it as a course against the clock, often around barrels or obstacles. Knocking or skipping an obstacle costs penalties.
- Criollo breed shows run rienda as a fixed pattern of exercises in set order. Judges score each maneuver.
Either way, a good run looks quiet. The horse stays soft in the mouth, doesn't fight the bit and changes direction without losing rhythm. For more on that kind of control, see our riding skills section.
Argentina jineteada: categories and scoring
In a jineteada, a rider tries to stay on a bucking horse with good form until the time signal. Horses start tied at the palenque (a post). Two mounted helpers, the apadrinadores, ride in at the end to pick up the rider and steady the horse.
| Category | Gear | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Crina limpia | No saddle, a leather strap round the neck | 8 seconds |
| Gurupa surera | Cinched sheepskin, no stirrups, reins and whip | 12 seconds |
| Bastos con encimera | Gaucho saddle, both stirrups required | 12-15 seconds, by rulebook |
Times differ between circuits, so each festival's rulebook decides. Judges look at:
- Staying on until the signal. Falling off scores nothing.
- Style and control: posture, rhythm and keeping gear in hand.
- Fouls that zero a ride: losing a stirrup or the whip in bastos, striking the horse on the head, or locking spur rowels into the horse.
On many circuits the horses earn points too, which is why a contractor's tropilla matters. A horse that won't buck, or bolts, can score zero.
Horse welfare rules
Published jineteada rulebooks, such as the one from Entre Ríos's Diamante festival, say animal welfare must come first and unnecessary punishment avoided. Organizers inspect horses beforehand and can turn any away, and stimulants are banned. Diamante also breathalyzes riders before they mount.
SENASA rules for horse gatherings ask for health papers such as a negative equine infectious anemia test and current vaccines. Its 2023 emergency protocol also required a SENASA-accredited event vet. The 2026 San José coverage didn't say how its vet care is set up, so ask organizers if that matters to you.
What to do and what to watch next
If you're going today:
- Get to the cabalgata route or the grounds before 11:00 for the opening.
- Bring cash for the gate, food stalls and stands.
- Stand well back from the palenque and the arena rail. Bucking horses and pickup riders move fast.
- Keep kids beside you near horses. Our safety page covers the basics.
- Watch the weather: horse events may be adjusted if it rains.
If you're riding in a cabalgata:
- Carry your horse's health papers and current vaccine records.
- Check shoes, girth and bridle before you leave home.
- Bring water and plan shade breaks for your horse.
Watch next: results from the prueba de riendas and jineteadas, if organizers or Misiones media publish them, and the 12th edition date in 2027. Compare with Argentina's other October fiestas in our guides to the Bragado horse festival and the Trancas horse festival, or meet the Criollo horse most of these riders use.
