Trancas horse festival 2026: what's happening

The Trancas horse festival is Argentina's Fiesta Nacional e Internacional del Caballo, held every October in Trancas, in the north of Tucumán province. The 27th edition runs Thursday Oct 8 to Sunday Oct 11, 2026 at the Club Deportivo Trancas.

It was scheduled for the Oct 12 long weekend (listed as Día de la Raza on the official 2026 calendar), so visitors can rest on Monday after the closing night. Panorama 24 reports that organizers expect more than 120,000 visitors over the four days.

The program in brief

Official and press descriptions list these horse-centered activities:

  • Jineteadas (bronc-riding style contests)
  • Destrezas criollas (traditional horsemanship skills)
  • Exhibition of horses and livestock
  • A Peruvian horse contest (caballo peruano de paso)
  • Parades of gaucho groups (agrupaciones gauchas)
  • Folk dance academies and regional food

There is also a full evening music program. We are not listing artists here because lineups and times can change; check the municipality's official channels for the day-by-day schedule.

Visitor info: venue, tickets, getting there

Venue: Club Deportivo Trancas, in the town of Trancas.

Tickets: Panorama 24 and Terra Viva report a general ticket of ARS 20,000, sold online through Paseshow and at authorized points in Tucumán and nearby provinces. Prices can change, so treat any figure as an estimate and verify at the official sale point.

Free entry: reported for Trancas residents with DNI, and for people with disabilities from Tucumán plus one companion, with documentation.

Getting there

Trancas is roughly 72 km (about 55 minutes by car) from San Miguel de Tucumán, mostly on National Route 9. Expect a toll on the way and heavy traffic around opening and closing hours.

Because demand is high, Panorama 24 reports that towns within about 80 km, such as San Pedro, Raco and El Cadillal, take overflow visitors. Book lodging early if you want to stay overnight.

A short checklist

  1. Buy tickets only from official or authorized points.
  2. Bring sun protection, a hat and water; the program is mostly outdoors.
  3. Wear closed shoes. Dust and horses go together.
  4. Keep a respectful distance from horses and never walk behind one.
  5. Check the schedule for the day you want; the riding events and the music nights run on different timetables.

What the gaucho traditions mean

Each event comes from real ranch work. Knowing the basics makes the weekend far more fun.

Jineteada

A jineteada tests a rider on an unbroken or lightly broken horse (a potro). In the traditional categories, such as crina limpia (bareback, holding the mane) or bastos con encimera (with a traditional saddle), the rider must stay on for a set time while the horse bucks.

It grew out of doma, the work of gentling young horses on the estancia. Today it is also a spectator sport, and it is debated: for the other side of that conversation, read natural horsemanship vs traditional training in our trends section.

Destrezas criollas

These are the skills a ranch hand needs: precise control, handling the soga (rope), and handling a horse in tight spaces. They reward calm communication between rider and horse more than raw force.

Desfile de agrupaciones gauchas

The parade is the cultural centerpiece. Groups ride in traditional dress, with bombachas, facón, wide belts and silver-trimmed gear, to show that the gaucho way of life is alive. If you want a bigger version of the same idea, see our guide to the Luján gaucho horse parade.

Caballo peruano de paso

The Peruvian horse contest is judged on its smooth, natural four-beat gait and its presence. The breed descends from Spanish horses brought in the colonial era.

And the criollo horse?

The working horse behind most of these skills is the Argentine criollo, known for toughness and endurance. We cover the breed in full in our Criollo horse guide, so we won't repeat it here.

What to watch next

  • Official schedule: check the Trancas municipality and Tucumán tourism pages for hours.
  • Long-weekend traffic: leave early on Route 9.
  • Next year: the festival is held every October, so this guide works as a planning base for the 2027 edition. Watch for dates around the October holiday.
  • Related traditions: compare with Chile's huaso culture.

If you're new to this world, our disciplines and breeds pages are a good starting point.
