What is the Bragado horse festival, and when is it in 2026?

The Bragado horse festival, officially the 55th Fiesta Nacional del Caballo, runs from Wednesday, October 7 to Sunday, October 11, 2026 in Bragado, a town in western Buenos Aires province, Argentina. It is a five-day celebration of the criollo horse and gaucho culture, with art, folk music, ranch skills and a closing jineteada (Argentine bronc riding).

The day-by-day program was published by Bragado Informa on September 8 and confirmed by Diario Democracia on September 9. Argentina's October 12 holiday falls on a Monday this year, creating a long weekend from Saturday Oct 10 to Monday Oct 12, so the two big horse days land right inside it.

If you're following Argentine horse culture this week, note there are two "Fiestas del Caballo" at once. The other Fiesta del Caballo this weekend is in Trancas, Tucumán, more than 1,000 km to the north: see our Trancas Horse Festival 2026 guide.

Saturday's criollo horse skills, explained

Saturday morning is the day horse people should not miss. Here is what each event actually is.

Aparte campero: cattle sorting as a team sport

Aparte campero recreates a daily ranch job: cutting specific cattle out of the herd and moving them into a pen. A team of three riders works together to pen three numbered cows in the shortest time possible, against a tight clock.

What makes it great to watch is the teamwork. Under the Criollo breeders' association rules, two riders go into the herd to cut out the target cow while the third stays back as portero, guarding the gate to the pen and only moving a few meters forward to "make a lane" for the cow. After each cow is penned correctly, the riders rotate, so everyone takes a turn at the gate. Criollo horses are the classic choice because they are compact, quick to turn and steady around cattle. Learn more in our Criollo horse guide.

Judges also inspect horse, saddle and rider before the run. At many apartes, modern jackets with zippers or sponsor logos are not allowed: the look has to be traditional.

Concurso de aperos: what the tack judges look for

Aperos are the full set of a gaucho's working tack: the layered recado saddle (sheepskin pads, bastos, a cojinillo on top and a cinch), plus headstall, reins, bit, stirrups and often silverwork and braided rawhide. Bragado's contest is for aperos de uso tradicional, meaning gear that is actually used, not museum pieces.

Judging criteria vary by contest, but they usually center on:

  • Authenticity: pieces true to the region's tradition, with no modern substitutes.
  • Craftsmanship: quality of the leather, rawhide braiding (guasquería) and silver.
  • Function and fit: the gear sits correctly on the horse and is in good working condition.
  • Harmony: a coherent set where the pieces match each other and the rider's dress.

Entrevero de tropillas

A tropilla is a group of horses, ideally all the same coat color, trained to follow one lead mare called the madrina, who wears a bell. Before fences, gauchos traveled long distances this way: only the madrina needed to be led, and the rest followed the sound of her bell.

In an entrevero, several tropillas are gathered and mixed in the arena, then released. The show is watching each group sort itself out and stick with its own madrina, a living demonstration of herd behavior. For more on how horses bond to a leader, see our behavior guide.

Petizo Argentino calmness demo and "arréglese como pueda"

The Petizo Argentino is a small Argentine pony breed, long linked to children's riding. A mansedumbre (tameness) demo shows off its quiet temperament.

"Arréglese como pueda" means "manage however you can." It is a traditional country game; the program does not detail the rules, which vary from town to town.

Sunday: Paseo Criollo and the gran jineteada

Sunday starts at 10 a.m. with the Paseo Criollo, a parade of riders in traditional dress, followed by lunch at Parque Lacunario.

At 2 p.m. comes the gran jineteada: two rounds of 25 horses, assigned by draw, with invited riders. In a jineteada, a rider tries to stay on an unbroken horse for a set number of seconds while staying in style.

  • Common categories are crina limpia (bareback), grupa surera (on a sheepskin) and basto con encimera (on a light saddle with stirrups).
  • Judges score technique, style and composure, and deduct for faults such as losing a stirrup.
  • Helpers on horseback, called apadrinadores, ride alongside to take the rider off safely when the bell rings.

Who was Molina Campos?

Florencio Molina Campos (1891–1959) is the painter who gave Argentina its most beloved images of gauchos and their horses. Born in Buenos Aires, he grew up partly on his family's estancia, where ranch hands became his models.

  • 1926: his first exhibition, 61 pastels and watercolors at the Sociedad Rural Argentina. Bragado's opening tribute marks its 100th anniversary.
  • 1931–1936 and 1940–1945: his paintings illustrated the Alpargatas calendars, with roughly 18 million prints hung in homes and shops across Argentina and neighboring countries.
  • 1940s: Walt Disney hired him as an advisor for Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros. He walked away, unhappy with how the gaucho was being portrayed.

His style is easy to spot: long-faced, slightly bow-legged gauchos and round-bellied, scruffy criollo horses, painted with humor and affection.

What to do and watch next

  • Plan around Saturday morning if you want the horse skills. Arrive by 10 a.m. at the Campo de Destrezas.
  • Book early: it's a long weekend, and Bragado is a popular getaway from Buenos Aires.
  • Bring kids to the Petizo Argentino demo and the Paseo Criollo. Teach them never to walk behind a strange horse; our safety page has the basics.
  • Watch the tropillas: see if you can spot each madrina and her bell.
  • Keep going: read about another big date on Argentina's traditionalist calendar, the Luján gaucho horse parade.

We'll keep this guide to the program as published. If organizers change times, venues or tickets, their update takes priority.
