Lukas Classic 2026: what's happening today

The Lukas Classic 2026 is a Grade 2, $500,000 race for horses 3 years old and up, run at 1⅛ miles on dirt today, Saturday, Sept. 26, at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Post time is 5:29 p.m. ET as Race 10, and it airs on FanDuel TV.

This is the 13th running. It anchors a strong Saturday card that also includes the Grade 3, $400,000 Ack Ack Stakes at one mile and the $300,000 Bourbon Flight at 1 1/16 miles, as the Churchill Downs September meet heads into its closing week.

Result status: the race hasn't been run as we publish. We'll only report a winner once the result is official.

Who's in the Lukas Classic Stakes field

Seven horses were drawn on Sept. 19. Two of them, Original Sin and McAfee, are also entered in the Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita the same afternoon, and Churchill Downs says they are scheduled to scratch here and run in California instead. If those scratches go through as planned, this becomes a five-horse race. Check the official scratches on Equibase or the Churchill Downs site before post time.

A quick read on each runner:

• Chunk of Gold, a 4-year-old son of Preservationist, was most recently second by a neck in the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin at Monmouth Park.
• Tiztastic won the 2025 Louisiana Derby (G2) and was fifth in this summer's Grade 1 Whitney at Saratoga.
• Banishing, a multimillionaire and graded stakes winner, ran second in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic on Aug. 28.
• Dragoon Guard, also a graded winner, was seventh in that same Charles Town Classic and is looking to bounce back.
• This Is Uscar, a 5-year-old gelding, beat Chunk of Gold by 3¾ lengths in a Churchill allowance race on June 28. He's chasing his first graded stakes win, and his trainer picked this race because the horse likes two-turn races.

What the race is, and why the grade matters

In North American racing, the best stakes races get a grade from 1 to 3, with Grade 1 at the top. Grade 2 means a high-quality race just below the championship level, often with a purse of several hundred thousand dollars. For the full explanation, see our guide to what a Grade 1 race is.

A few terms that help beginners follow along:

• 3-year-olds and up: the race is open to horses aged 3 or older, so this year's young stars can meet seasoned older horses.
• 1⅛ miles: nine furlongs, a classic distance on American dirt. At Churchill it means two turns.
• Stakes race: owners pay nomination and entry fees, and the track adds prize money. It's the top tier of racing, above allowance and claiming races.
• Scratch: a horse withdrawn after entries close, as Original Sin and McAfee are expected to be here.

How a fall prep fits the road to the Breeders' Cup

The $7 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic is Saturday, Oct. 31, at Keeneland in Lexington, at 1¼ miles on dirt. It's the richest race of the two-day Breeders' Cup World Championships on Oct. 30-31, and it's limited to 14 starters.

The Lukas Classic falls exactly five weeks earlier. That spacing is a big part of why trainers use it. Most top dirt horses race every four to eight weeks, so a late-September race lets a horse run hard once and still have time to recover before the biggest day of the fall.

What a prep race does for a horse

• Fitness: a real race builds conditioning that morning workouts alone can't.
• Distance test: 1⅛ miles is one furlong short of the Classic, so it shows whether a horse can carry speed around two turns.
• Form check: a strong run can persuade owners to pay to enter the Breeders' Cup. A flat run often means skipping it and waiting for next season.
• Reputation: graded wins raise a horse's profile and future breeding value.

The Lukas Classic is one of several fall options. The same afternoon, the Goodwood at Santa Anita is expected to draw two of its entrants away. The trainer behind the name: D. Wayne Lukas

D. Wayne Lukas was one of the most influential trainers in American racing history. He died June 28, 2025, at his home in Louisville at age 89, after a severe infection. Churchill Downs called him one of the most significant figures in the sport over the last 50 years.

From basketball coach to Hall of Famer

Lukas started out as a high school basketball coach in Wisconsin. He trained Quarter Horses in South Dakota and California before switching to Thoroughbreds in the late 1970s.

His record is hard to match:

• 15 Triple Crown race wins: four Kentucky Derbies, seven Preakness Stakes and four Belmont Stakes.
• Kentucky Derby winners: Winning Colors (1988), Thunder Gulch (1995), Grindstone (1996) and Charismatic (1999).
• 20 Breeders' Cup wins and four Eclipse Awards as outstanding trainer.
• Racing Hall of Fame induction in 1999.
• His final classic win came with Seize the Grey in the 2024 Preakness.

Why he mattered beyond the wins

Lukas changed how big stables work. He built one operation into a multi-state network with divisions at several tracks at once, a model many top trainers now copy.

He also trained trainers. Todd Pletcher, Kiaran McLaughlin, Dallas Stewart and Mike Maker all worked for him. Fans remember his tailored clothes, cowboy hat and aviator sunglasses, and his famously spotless barns.

Churchill renamed its fall Classic for him in 2015, a decade before his death. Every running now doubles as a tribute.

Past winners worth knowing

The race began in 2013 as the Homecoming Classic. It has attracted champions from the start.

• Fort Larned (2013): won the very first running, as the Homecoming Classic.
• Knicks Go (2021): won in 1:47.85, still the race's fastest time, on his way to Horse of the Year.
• Hot Rod Charlie (2022) and Hit Show (2024) kept the race on the national radar.
• Mystik Dan (2025): the 2024 Kentucky Derby winner won last year's edition under Francisco Arrieta for trainer Kenny McPeek.

What to watch next

Here's a simple checklist for the next five weeks:

1. Tonight: watch the Lukas Classic at 5:29 p.m. ET on FanDuel TV, then check the official chart on Equibase or the Churchill Downs site.
2. Next few days: listen for trainers' comments. When they say a horse came out of the race well and is pointing to Keeneland, that signals Breeders' Cup plans.
3. Late October: Breeders' Cup pre-entries show who is actually committed to the Classic.
4. Oct. 30-31: the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland, with the Classic at 6:16 p.m. ET on Oct. 31.
