Little Brown Jug 2026: when, where and who

Little Brown Jug 2026 is Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware, Ohio. It's the 81st running of harness racing's most famous race for 3-year-old pacers, and eleven horses were entered in two elimination heats.

The Jug is unusual because it happens at a county fair, not a big-city racetrack. The fair runs Sept. 19-26, and racing wraps up on Jug day. First post is 11 a.m., the eliminations are races 15 and 16, and the final is race 19.

The two eliminations

Heat 1 (six horses), by post position:

2. Al Papi (Yannick Gingras, Burke)
3. Toast Of The Town (Jason Bartlett, Noel Daley)
4. Thai Hanover (Dexter Dunn, Mitch York)

Heat 2 (five horses), by post position:

1. Hunting Glory (Ridge Warren, Robert Cleary)
2. Watch Em Win (trainer Ron Burke)
3. Fragment (Jason Bartlett, Per Engblom)
4. Melillo (Ronnie Wrenn Jr., Burke)
5. Redland Rocket Man (Jody Jamieson, John Pentland)

The top four from each heat go to the final. With only 11 entered, most of the field advances, so the heats are as much about racing sharp as about surviving.

Jugette 2026 winner: Loua Dipa

The Jugette 2026 winner is Loua Dipa. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, she won the $265,000 Jugette for 3-year-old pacing fillies, driven by Ronnie Wrenn Jr. She won the final by 1¼ lengths over Darlin's Angel in 1:53.

The Jugette had a $25,000 heat followed by a $240,000 final, and Loua Dipa won both. In the heat she held off her stablemate I'm A Lou Lou by a half-length in 1:53.3.

• It was trainer Ron Burke's sixth Jugette, the most by any trainer.
• Loua Dipa is a homebred daughter of Sweet Lou. She has 15 wins from 23 starts and $1,288,618 in career earnings.
• Wrenn also drove Burke's Louprint to win the 2025 Little Brown Jug in 1:50.1.

What is harness racing?

If you're wondering what is harness racing, here's the short version. Horses race at a trot or a pace, never a gallop, pulling a driver who sits in a light two-wheeled cart called a sulky.

It's a different sport from the Thoroughbred racing you see at the Kentucky Derby or the Breeders' Cup. There are no jockeys, and the horse has to hold its gait the whole mile.

The Standardbred

Nearly all harness horses in North America are Standardbreds. The breed traces back to Messenger, a Thoroughbred imported in 1788, and to his great-grandson Hambletonian 10, foaled in 1849.

The name comes from the "standard" mile time early trotters had to reach to be registered. Standardbreds are usually sturdy, sensible and hardworking, which is why many retired racehorses go on to trail riding and pleasure driving. See more breeds in our breeds guide.

The sulky and the driver

The driver steers with long reins and sits just behind the horse's hindquarters. Top drivers such as Yannick Gingras, Dexter Dunn and Ronnie Wrenn Jr. drive for many trainers, so the same name can show up behind several horses in one week.

Tactics matter a lot. Drivers decide when to go to the front, when to sit in a "pocket" behind the leader, and when to swing out and brush to the lead.

Pacing vs trotting: the key difference

Here's pacing vs trotting in one line: a trotter moves its legs in diagonal pairs, and a pacer moves both legs on the same side together. Both are two-beat gaits, so they sound similar, but they look very different.

Hopples are straps that link the front and hind leg on the same side. They help a pacer keep its lateral rhythm at speed. Pacers are slightly faster than trotters at the top level and less likely to break stride, which means slipping into a gallop.

A horse that breaks stride must be taken back to its gait and usually loses its chance in the race. Pacing races make up most harness races in North America.

Can a pacer be ridden?

Yes. A gene called DMRT3 is strongly linked to gaited horses like pacers, but it doesn't settle which gait a horse races at by itself. Retired trotters usually switch to riding more easily. Little Brown Jug heats explained

Heats are the oldest idea in harness racing: the same horses race more than once on the same day. The very first Jug, in 1946, took four heats before Ensign Hanover won.

Today it's simpler:

1. Eliminations. Two heats of five or six horses each.
2. Qualifying. The top four in each heat advance.
3. Final. Eight horses race again later the same afternoon for the trophy and most of the purse.

That means a Jug winner has to race hard twice in one afternoon. Fitness, recovery between races and post position in the final can matter as much as raw speed.

Why the half-mile fair track matters

The Delaware oval is a half-mile track, so horses go around twice to race a mile. That means four tight turns instead of two, and it's hard to make up ground from the outside.

The Jug's own history calls it the fastest racing strip of its size in the country. Inside posts and quick early speed are big advantages, and the driver's timing is everything.

The Triple Crown for pacers

The Jug has anchored the Pacing Triple Crown since 1956. The three legs for 3-year-old pacers are:

• Messenger Stakes at Yonkers. Fragment won it on June 26, 2026, a half-length ahead of Al Papi.
• Cane Pace at the Meadowlands. Sweet Lovin Lou won it on Aug. 8, 2026.
• Little Brown Jug in Delaware, Ohio.

The first two legs had different winners, so there's no Triple Crown sweep on the line this year. Fragment can still add the Jug to his Messenger, and Al Papi comes in as a Grade 1 Adios winner.

What to watch on Jug day

• Burke's four horses. Ron Burke has won five Jugs. A sixth would tie Billy Haughton for the most Jug wins by a trainer.
• Al Papi vs Fragment. They were separated by a half-length in the Messenger and are in different eliminations.
• Millionaires. Fragment, Al Papi and Melillo have each earned more than $1 million.
• The final draw. Watch where each horse starts in the final. On a half-mile track, an inside post can decide the race.
