On Oct. 8, 2026, Huelva's local press published the full program for Lepe's first Feria del Caballo (Oct. 15–18).

TL;DR

  • The first Lepe horse fair runs Thursday, Oct. 15 to Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026 at the fairground in the parque de la Coronación in Lepe (Huelva, Spain).
  • The big moment is Saturday, Oct. 17: a horse and carriage parade from calle Rábida to the fairground (announced for 11:30), plus a contest for jinetes and amazonas.
  • Riding-school students give an exhibition on Friday at 20:00, and local and provincial riders give one on Sunday from 17:00.
  • Sources differ on the number of casetas: ten private plus a double municipal one, or eleven in total.
  • The council has announced rest and water stops, veterinary care and welfare checks. Riders should confirm registration details with the Ayuntamiento de Lepe.

Lepe horse fair 2026: dates, venue and casetas

The Lepe horse fair (Feria del Caballo de Lepe) is a brand-new, four-day horse festival running from Thursday, Oct. 15 to Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026 in Lepe, a farming and fishing town on the coast of Huelva province in southwest Spain. It takes place at the recinto ferial (fairground) in the parque de la Coronación, and its main event is a horse and carriage parade on Saturday, Oct. 17.

The full program was published on Oct. 8. It's the first edition, so expect a smaller, more local feel than the big Andalusian fairs in Jerez or Seville.

The fairground has three parts:

  • A main ring for riding exhibitions and contests
  • A gathering area where horses and riders assemble, plus space for riding
  • Casetas, the decorated party tents where people eat, drink and dance sevillanas

On the caseta count, the sources disagree. Diario de Huelva and Huelva24 both describe ten private casetas plus one municipal caseta described as double ("de carácter doble"). Huelva24's headline adds that up as eleven. Either way, the municipal caseta is open to the public.

The program, day by day

This is everything the Oct. 8 press reports confirm. We left out anything we couldn't verify.

Saturday's horse parade and the riders' contest

The paseo de caballos y enganches (ridden horses and horse-drawn carriages) gathers on calle Rábida. From there it follows calle César Barrios, calle Real, calle Alonso Barba and calle Fuentenueva to the fairground.

The 11:30 start time comes from the town's September announcement. The Oct. 8 reports confirm the route but don't repeat the time, so check the council's channels the day before.

Riders and carriage owners from Lepe and the rest of the province are invited. Registration for the riders' contest was still open as of Oct. 8.

How a jinetes and amazonas contest is judged

The Saturday contest has "several categories," but Lepe hasn't published what they are. Seville's published rules for its 2019 Feria de Abril contest give a good idea of how these feria contests work in Andalusia:

  • It isn't a race or a dressage test. It's a single event where the riders are presented to a jury, the jury scores them and the prizes are handed out on the spot.
  • Jinetes (also called caballistas) usually ride in the traditional short jacket (traje corto) and wide-brimmed hat on a vaquera saddle. Amazonas are women riders, traditionally sidesaddle.
  • Categories split by age and type. Seville's contest had separate classes for riders up to 10, 10 to 17 and over 18. Vaquera riders could also enter with a second rider sitting behind on the horse's croup (a la grupa).
  • What judges look at. In Seville's criteria: clothing and how well it matches the traditional riding style; the horse's general health; how clean and well groomed the mane, tail, ears, forelock and pasterns are; and the condition of the buckles, stirrups and saddle.
  • The jury's decision is final, and prizes can be left unawarded if nobody meets the standard.

In short, it rewards a well-cared-for horse and a correctly turned-out rider, not speed or tricks. If you want to understand the working riding style behind the vaquera saddle, read our doma vaquera explainer.

How a new horse fair gets organized

A first-year feria del caballo doesn't just happen. Lepe's council followed a pattern you see across Andalusia.

  1. Pick and lay out the ground. A ring, an assembly area for horses and the caseta street, all inside one fenced fairground.
  2. Publish the bases. These are the official rules for joining the parade and for applying for a caseta. Lepe says its bases are meant to regulate the fair and keep it safe.
  3. Set a shared look for the casetas. Lepe's can be private, run by associations or tied to religious brotherhoods (hermandades), but they must follow a common traditional style.
  4. Open registration for riders and carriages, with a fixed route and time.
  5. Plan welfare and security for horses and the public.

One detail people miss: a fair's horse parade can count as an animal gathering in Andalusia. Jerez's rules say its parade is one, so it must be reported to the regional agriculture department and only properly identified, documented horses may enter.

What a rider needs to take part

Lepe's press releases don't list the exact contents of its bases, so ask the Ayuntamiento de Lepe for the official form. Based on the rules at established fairs like Jerez and Seville, expect a checklist like this:

  • Registration before the deadline, for each horse or carriage
  • Horse ID and health papers: the equine passport or ID card with microchip number, and proof of required vaccinations
  • Third-party liability insurance valid on the fair dates. Jerez sets a minimum of €60,000 for riders and €300,000 for carriages; Lepe's figure may differ
  • Shoes with non-slip material, because horses walk on asphalt and paving stones
  • Traditional clothing that matches your saddle or carriage style, with proper boots (no sneakers)
  • Minors riding with an adult and with express permission from a parent or guardian
  • No rented horses. Jerez bans renting horses for the parade
  • Walk only. Galloping is banned on the fairground, and you can't tie a horse to a caseta, lamp post or tree

Horse welfare at the fair

Lepe's organizers have promised three welfare measures: rest and water stops, veterinary care and checks on the animals' condition. That matches what larger fairs do. Jerez, for example, requires water troughs and a vet post, and its vet inspectors can have an unfit horse removed.

If you bring a horse, plan as if no one else will look after it:

  • Offer water at every stop, even in October. Southern Spain can still be warm at midday.
  • Watch for warning signs: heavy sweating that won't stop, fast breathing at rest, stumbling, or a horse that refuses to eat or drink. Any sign of colic is a reason to call a vet at once.
  • Give it shade and a break between the parade and the afternoon.
  • Ask the on-site vet right away if something looks wrong, and check our health basics.

For spectators, especially families with kids, the safety rules are simple. Stay on the sidewalk, never walk behind a horse, and ask before touching one.

What to watch next

  • This weekend first: Huelva's own Feria de Otoño y del Caballo runs Friday, Oct. 9 to Sunday, Oct. 11, with casetas closing at 04:00 on Monday, Oct. 12, so the two fairs fall on back-to-back weekends.
  • Final timings: check the Ayuntamiento de Lepe's channels for any change to the Saturday start time or route.
  • Contest categories and registration: if you want to ride, contact the council before Saturday.
  • The caseta count: we'll update this page if the council clarifies whether it's ten plus one or eleven.
  • After Oct. 18: contest results and whether Lepe confirms a second edition. The council has said it hopes the fair grows.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Lepe horse fair 2026?

From Thursday, Oct. 15 to Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, at the fairground in the parque de la Coronación in Lepe (Huelva). It is the town's first Feria del Caballo.

What time is the horse parade in Lepe and where does it start?

It's on Saturday, Oct. 17, announced for 11:30. It gathers on calle Rábida and follows César Barrios, Real, Alonso Barba and Fuentenueva to the fairground. Check the council's channels for any last-minute change to the time.

How many casetas does the Lepe fair have?

Local reports describe ten private casetas plus one double municipal caseta that's open to the public. Some headlines count that as eleven casetas in total.

Can I ride in the Lepe horse parade?

Riders and carriage owners from Lepe and the rest of Huelva province are invited, and registration for the riders' contest was open as of Oct. 8. Follow the council's published rules (bases). At established fairs you need horse ID and health papers, liability insurance and traditional dress, so expect something similar.

How is a jinetes and amazonas contest judged?

Riders are presented to a jury, which scores them. At fairs like Seville's, judges look at the rider's traditional clothing, the horse's health and grooming, and the condition of the saddle and tack. Speed plays no part, and the jury's decision is final.

Is the Lepe fair the same as the Huelva horse fair?

No. Huelva city's Feria de Otoño y del Caballo runs Friday, Oct. 9 to Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026, with casetas closing at 04:00 on Monday, Oct. 12. Lepe's is a separate, new fair the following weekend, Oct. 15–18.
