The Huelva horse fair 2026, officially the Feria de Otoño y del Caballo (Autumn and Horse Fair), runs Friday Oct. 9 to Sunday Oct. 11 at Parque Alcalde Juan Ceada Infantes, with the show ring at the Muelle de Levante. This year's guest town is Beas, a village in Huelva province with a deep horse tradition.

The news that put it back in the conversation came on Sept. 25. Huelva unveiled the fair poster, an oil painting by local artist Jesús García Osorno, chosen, as in 2025, through a contest run by the Asociación Huelva Ecuestre. This year it drew 11 artists.

The painting centers on a Lusitano-type horse with a convex profile. Autumn tones (reds, garnets, ochres and pinks), roses and pomegranates frame it, along with an image of the Virgen de los Clarines.

What's new this year

• The show ring and a new street of casetas (party tents) move onto Port of Huelva land at the Muelle de Levante, next to the park. Existing casetas stay on the usual grounds.
• Avenida de Hispanoamérica closes to traffic during the fair to link the park and the quay.
• The goal is more room for the fair and less wear on the park.
• The city's main caseta stays free to enter. Beas, local religious brotherhoods and the Port each get their own caseta too.

Horse program day by day

The official opening is Friday at 13:00, with a welcome for the Beas delegation. There are free concerts in the evening and at night in the city caseta, but horse fans should plan around the midday-to-sunset parade hours.

What is an Andalusian horse fair?

An Andalusian horse fair is an open-air festival where the horse is the star. By day, riders and carriages circle the grounds at a relaxed walk. That's the paseo. Around it you'll find casetas with music, food and dancing, plus exhibitions in a ring.

It isn't a horse show or a rodeo. It's mostly a chance to show off the horse, the outfit and the turnout, and to mingle with people on foot.

The paseo: a Spanish feria horse parade

In a Spanish feria horse parade, horses walk, usually in lines, through lanes set aside for them. In Andalusia you'll mostly see Pura Raza Española (Andalusian), Lusitano and crossbred horses, often with braided or decorated manes.

Big ferias like Seville's require up-to-date horse papers and vaccinations. They also ban fast trotting near the crowd, and vets can pull a lame, injured or stressed horse from the paseo.

Enganches: carriage driving in Spain

An enganche is a carriage pulled by horses (or mules) and driven by a cochero. The name depends on how many animals are hitched and how they're arranged:

• Limonera: one horse between two shafts.
• Tronco: two horses side by side.
• Tándem: two horses, one in front of the other.
• Cuarta: four horses in two pairs, one pair in front of the other.
• Potencia: three horses abreast.

In a carriage exhibition, judges look at presentation: a spotless carriage and harness, a well-matched team and a skilled driver. It's the heart of carriage driving in Spain at feria time.

Jinete, amazona and the traje corto

• Jinete (male rider): wears the traje corto: short jacket, high-waisted trousers, white shirt, leather boots and a flat, wide-brimmed Córdoba hat. It grew out of ranch work clothes.
• Amazona (female rider): a woman riding her own horse. She may wear the traje corto or, if she rides sidesaddle, a traje de amazona with a long skirt.
• A la grupa: a woman rides pillion behind the jinete, usually in a flamenco dress.

That's why Saturday's prize-giving covers both the carriage contest and the amazonas-and-jinetes contest.

Huelva vs. Jerez: two very different fairs

Jerez's Feria del Caballo is Spain's most famous horse fair. In 2026 it ran May 9-16 at Parque González Hontoria, and it holds the Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional (festival of international tourist interest) title.

Jerez adds breed judging and shows by the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre. Huelva is easier to take in: a smaller fair and a short program you can see in one weekend.

Family tips: horse safety in crowds

Horses are prey animals, and a balloon, a shout or an umbrella can spook them. A fair means crowds, music and noise, so review our safety basics before you go.

Quick parade checklist

1. Stay in the pedestrian area. Never cut between horses, or between a carriage and its team.
2. Never walk behind a horse. Go around the front, with plenty of room.
3. Ask before petting. Ask the rider or driver. If they say yes, stroke the neck, not the face.
4. Don't feed the horses. No treats or bread: fingers get nipped and strange food can upset a horse.
5. Hold small kids' hands or carry them near the horse lanes.
6. Leave balloons, balls and noisy toys away from the animals.
7. Wear closed-toe shoes. A hoof landing on a sandal hurts.
8. Pick a meeting spot in case someone gets lost in the crowd.

If you're riding in the paseo

• Bring a horse that's already used to noise. The fairground isn't the place to train a nervous one. See our groundwork guides.
• Carry water and find shade between rounds. Heat and long hours on hard ground are tiring.
• Check shoes, saddle and bridle before you set out. A loose buckle in a crowd is a real risk.
