Who Is Hughes? The Unbeaten Baffert Colt Who Won the Juvenile
Hughes won at Keeneland to go 5-for-5 and finally had to fight for it. Here's who he is, who owns him, and why a Juvenile win is a great start but no promise for the first Saturday in May.

Why it's trending
Hughes won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Oct. 30 at Keeneland to stay unbeaten, which makes him the name to know among 2-year-olds heading into the 2027 Kentucky Derby season.
TL;DR
- Hughes won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Keeneland by 2 1/4 lengths over American History, with stablemate Salahudin third, in 1:42.27.
- He is 5-for-5, has won by a combined 27 lengths or so, and has earned $1,520,000.
- He is by Into Mischief out of K P Dreamin, bred by Breffni Farm, and cost $675,000 as a yearling.
- Baffert said he goes to Santa Anita to prepare for his 3-year-old season. No next race or Derby commitment has been announced.
- The Juvenile pays 30 Derby points to the winner, yet only two of the 42 winners before Hughes also won the Kentucky Derby.

On Friday afternoon at Keeneland, the Hughes racehorse story changed from "how good is he?" to "he can fight, too." Bob Baffert's unbeaten colt won the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile, and for the first time his rivals made him work for it.
Who is the Hughes racehorse?
Hughes is an unbeaten 2-year-old colt trained by Bob Baffert, and on Oct. 30, 2026, he won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, the biggest race of the year for young American dirt horses. He covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.27 under Flavien Prat, beating American History by 2 1/4 lengths.
Here are the essentials:
- Record: 5 starts, 5 wins, all in 2026
- Earnings: $1,520,000
- Color and sex: bay colt
- Sire and dam: Into Mischief out of K P Dreamin, by Union Rags
- Breeder: Breffni Farm, in Kentucky
- Sale price: $675,000 at the 2025 Keeneland September yearling sale
- Trainer and jockey in the Juvenile: Bob Baffert and Flavien Prat
His name has a hockey story behind it. Co-owner Tom Ryan named him after Jack Hughes, a star of the U.S. gold-medal team at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and the name also nods to Ryan's family.
How the 2026 Juvenile unfolded
Damavand set the pace through a quarter-mile in :23.36 and a half in :46.65. Hughes took over by three-quarters of a mile, reached in 1:10.86, and then the race got serious.
Coach Pope had tracked him early, and then American History and Salahudin both came at him in the stretch. Prat admitted the moment worried him: "I was nervous he'd throw in the towel turning for home, but he dug in and ran a great race."
Six horses ran after two late scratches. The first four home:
- Hughes
- American History, 2 1/4 lengths back
- Salahudin, a head behind American History
- Coach Pope
This is the part experienced horse people should underline. Before the race, Baffert said he didn't know how good Hughes was because the colt had won so easily and had never been tested. Afterward he said, "I'm glad we got to find out what he's made of."
It was a big day for the numbers, too:
- Baffert's seventh Juvenile, two more than Todd Pletcher's five
- Baffert's 22nd Breeders' Cup win. Aidan O'Brien passed him later that afternoon, reaching 23 with Haffner in the Juvenile Turf
- A third straight Juvenile winner for Into Mischief, after Citizen Bull in 2024 and Ted Noffey in 2025
- A first defeat for both American History and Salahudin

Five starts, five wins
| Race | Date | Margin | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debut, Los Alamitos | June 21 | 6 lengths | Five furlongs, as the 3-5 favorite |
| Best Pal (G3), Del Mar | Aug. 8 | 7 3/4 lengths | Three-quarters of a mile |
| Del Mar Futurity (G1) | Sept. 6 | 4 3/4 lengths | Seven furlongs |
| American Pharoah (G1), Santa Anita | Oct. 3 | 6 lengths | First try at 1 1/16 miles |
| Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1), Keeneland | Oct. 30 | 2 1/4 lengths | Smallest margin so far |
Add those up and you get 26 3/4 lengths, which racing reports round to 27. That's three Grade 1 wins in a row.
The American Pharoah mattered more than the margin suggests. Juan Hernandez, who rode him in the Futurity too, let him settle behind horses after a slow step at the start, and Baffert said learning that lesson was what the colt needed before the Breeders' Cup.
That skill travels. A young horse who can only run from the front has fewer ways to win as distances grow and fields get bigger.
Who owns Hughes?
Sources spelled this group several ways on race day, so we checked it against the race entries at Daily Racing Form and America's Best Racing. Both show a 10-way partnership led by Front Row Club (Tom Ryan's group), Starlight Racing and Madaket Stables.
The partners also include Stonestreet Stables, Bashor Racing, Albaugh Family Stables, Golconda Stable, Waves Edge Capital and two individual owners. BloodHorse has called the group "The Avengers." Ryan's partnerships have raced at this level before, including with Authentic, the 2020 Horse of the Year.
One detail often confuses newcomers: shared ownership is the norm at the top of the yearling market. Spreading a $675,000 purchase across several partners also spreads the risk, because most expensive yearlings never win a race like this.
What comes next for Hughes
Baffert said Hughes will go to Santa Anita to get ready for his 3-year-old season. He did not name a race, and he did not commit to the Kentucky Derby. Anything more specific right now is guesswork.
Prat offered one encouraging note: so far, distance hasn't looked like a problem, and he wants to see the colt stretch out.
The 2-year-old championship
The Eclipse Award for champion 2-year-old male won't be decided on the track alone. Voters from the NTRA, Daily Racing Form and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters choose it, and the awards are traditionally handed out in January.
Hughes has a strong case: unbeaten, three straight Grade 1 wins and the division's richest race. The past two Juvenile winners, Citizen Bull and Ted Noffey, both took the title. The one notable absentee was Champagne winner U. S. S. Valor, who skipped the Breeders' Cup, is done racing for 2026 and is expected to winter in Florida with trainer Shug McGaughey. No votes have been cast yet.
How Juvenile points work on the 2027 Derby road
The 153rd Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 1, 2027, at Churchill Downs. The gate holds 20 horses, and qualifying points decide most of those spots. The 2026-27 American series has 36 races at 13 tracks, and each pays its top five finishers.
| Race type | Points to top five | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Early preps | 10-5-3-2-1 | American Pharoah, Breeders' Futurity |
| Select winter preps | 20-10-6-4-2 | Robert B. Lewis |
| Breeders' Cup Juvenile | 30-15-9-6-3 | Oct. 30 at Keeneland |
| Championship series | 50-25-15-10-5 | San Felipe |
| Top final preps | 100-50-25-15-10 | Santa Anita Derby |
So Hughes collected 30 points for the win, three times what the fall's other preps pay. But the scale is built so the spring counts most. One late 100-point win is worth more than three Juveniles, which is exactly how a late bloomer can jump past a star from the fall.
We aren't printing a running total for Hughes here, because the official Derby leaderboard is the place to check once it updates. Rivals are on it too: American History won the Breeders' Futurity before his second place here.
Why Juvenile stars rarely win the Derby
Only two of the 42 Juvenile winners before Hughes also won the Kentucky Derby: Street Sense (2006-07) and Nyquist (2015-16). A BloodHorse study in 2023 found that more than 77% of Juvenile starters never made it to the Derby the following May.
The reasons are practical:
- Distance: the Derby is 1 1/4 miles, a full 3/16 of a mile longer than the Juvenile.
- Field size: up to 20 horses, compared with the six who ran in this Juvenile, means more traffic and more bad luck.
- Maturity: horses develop at different speeds, and a colt who dominates at 2 can be caught by ones who were still growing up.
- Time: six months is a long stretch for a young athlete. Setbacks kept Uncle Mo and Forte out of the Derby.
The freshest example is Ted Noffey. He won last year's Juvenile, was 4-for-4 and led the Derby points list in January with 40, then came off the trail with bone bruising and missed the whole Triple Crown.
Todd Pletcher, who has seen this from every side, summed up the challenge: a horse must be "exceptionally good at 2" and then "great at exactly the right time" at 3. For more on why these young horses are handled so carefully, read our guide to two-year-old racehorses.
What to watch next
- His first workouts at Santa Anita. A published return to the work tab is the first real sign of the plan.
- Baffert's first named race. Until then, treat every Derby prep talk as speculation.
- His 3-year-old debut distance. Prat's read on stamina gets its first real test as the races stretch out.
- American History and Salahudin. Both lost for the first time, and both gave Hughes a real race.
- U. S. S. Valor in Florida. He hasn't met Hughes yet.
- The Eclipse Awards. That's where the 2-year-old title gets settled.
