Valle de Allende feria 2026: dates and the cabalgata route
The Valle de Allende feria 2026 runs from Sunday, Oct. 4 to Sunday, Oct. 11 in Valle de Allende, Chihuahua, Mexico, in honor of the Virgen del Rosario, the town's patroness. It opens with the Cabalgata de la Virgen del Rosario, a two-day ride that leaves Colonia Búfalo on Saturday, Oct. 3 and arrives in town at noon on Sunday, Oct. 4.
The program was published Sept. 28, 2026 by the listings site Ferias en México, and El Monitor de Parral's Sept. 30 schedule gives the Sunday times. Treat the times below as the plan, not a promise, and confirm with the municipality of Allende before you trailer a horse. Some press, including El Heraldo de Chihuahua, lists the fiestas as Oct. 3-11 because the cabalgata starts on the Saturday.
The two-day ride, as published
| When | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Sat., Oct. 3 | Riders leave | Colonia Búfalo |
| Sat., Oct. 3, evening | Overnight stop; the municipality serves dinner | Estación Dorado |
| Sun., Oct. 4, 6:00 a.m. | Ride out toward town | Estación Dorado |
| Sun., Oct. 4, around noon | Arrival and pilgrimage in honor of the Virgin (about 12:15 p.m., per El Monitor de Parral); Mass at 1:00 p.m. | Valle de Allende |
| Sun., Oct. 4, 8:00 p.m. | Official inauguration, coronation of the feria queen, then La Sonora Dinamita | Esplanade of the municipal presidency |
Colonia Búfalo and Estación Dorado are both rural localities in the municipality of Allende. Locality data puts Búfalo about 45 km southeast of the town and Estación Dorado about 21 km south of it, so the ride is roughly a long half day on Saturday and a shorter morning on Sunday.
El Sol de Parral has reported that organizers expect around 300 riders. That is a neighborhood ride by Chihuahua standards, which makes it friendlier for first-timers than the giant July rides.
What is a religious cabalgata?
A cabalgata is a group horseback ride, and a religious one carries a devotion to a saint or an image of the Virgin. Riders travel together from an outlying community to the church or plaza where the feria begins, and the arrival is timed to open the celebrations.
It is not a race and not a parade of trained show horses. The point is to arrive together, on sound horses, and hand the feria over to the town. If you are new to the tradition, start with What Is a Cabalgata?.
Why Valle de Allende rides on the first Sunday of October
Azteca Chihuahua reports that the devotion to the Virgen del Rosario in Valle de Allende dates to Franciscan missionaries around 1600, and that the feria falls on the first Sunday of October every year. In 2026 that Sunday is Oct. 4, which is why the ride arrives that day.
The state tourism site Visita Chihuahua dates the parish of the Virgen del Rosario to 1574 and calls it the oldest in the state. Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) dates the present temple building to 1788-1792. During the feria the image is carried in procession through the streets.
The legend of the mule
The local story, as told by Azteca Chihuahua, goes like this. A farmer found an exhausted mule, led it to his corral and unloaded it. The load turned out to be the image of the Virgin, and when he looked back the mule had vanished.
That is the kind of tale that turns a feria into a pilgrimage. It also explains why a ride on hooves, not a bus, opens the week.
How a two-day cabalgata with an overnight stop works
Most cabalgatas finish in a single day. A two-day ride adds a night away from home for horse and rider, and that changes the planning.
- Day one is the long leg. Riders leave Colonia Búfalo on Saturday and cover the bigger share of the distance at a walk with breaks.
- The overnight is the hinge. At Estación Dorado the municipality serves dinner. Horses need water, hay and a safe place to be tied or penned before anyone eats.
- Day two starts in the dark. The 6 a.m. departure means saddling by headlamp in early-October desert cold.
- The arrival is a public event. Riders enter a town full of people, music and vendors, so the horse has to be settled by then.
Riders usually arrange their own hay, feed and support vehicle. Ask the organizers what is provided at Estación Dorado and what you must bring.
Two-day cabalgata checklist
The published program itself tells riders to check their horses and equipment beforehand, carry water for horse and rider, protect against sun, dress warm for the early leg and follow the organizers. Here is that list expanded into something you can pack from.
For the horse
- Shoes and feet: have your farrier check shoes or the trim this week. A lost shoe at kilometer 30 ends the ride. See how often a horse needs a farrier.
- Tack: inspect the saddle, cinch, latigo and headstall for cracks and worn stitching. Pack a spare cinch and halter. More in tack and equipment.
- Water: carry a collapsible bucket and let the horse drink at every chance. A horse that stops drinking or sweating needs a vet, not a push.
- Feed: hay for the night plus the next morning, and whatever grain the horse is already used to. Do not try new feed on the road.
- Fitness: if your horse has not done long, slow miles in the past month, this is not the weekend to start.
For the rider
- Hat and sunscreen: the program names both. Southern Chihuahua is high desert, and October sun still burns.
- Warm clothing: a jacket, gloves and something for your neck for the 6 a.m. leg. You can shed layers once the sun is up.
- Water and food: more than you think, plus electrolytes.
- Small kit: hoof pick, a basic first aid kit for horse and rider, a knife and a charged phone. See horse first aid kit checklist.
- Follow the organizers: they set the pace, the stops and the entry into town. Riding ahead of the group is how people and horses get hurt.

Where Valle de Allende sits: the Camino Real and Parral
Valle de Allende is in southern Chihuahua, about half an hour from Hidalgo del Parral. It was founded by Franciscan friars around 1569 as Valle de San Bartolomé (INAH traces its origins to the early 1560s) and was renamed in 1825 for independence hero Ignacio Allende.
The town is one of the stops on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the colonial road from Mexico City to northern New Mexico that UNESCO listed as World Heritage in 2010. INAH describes it as a supply and storage hub for the mining region around Parral.
Two warnings for anyone searching. Valle de Allende is not Valle de Rosario, the seat of the municipality of Rosario, a different Chihuahua town that holds its own patron fiestas in October. And this ride is not the Cabalgata Villista, the July ride that ended in Parral this year with more than 8,500 riders, according to the state government. That one is the regional giant; this one is the village devotion.
The feria after the horses arrive
The program lists eight days of music, culture and dance. The published lineup includes:
- Oct. 4: cabalgata arrival around noon; at 8 p.m., inauguration, coronation of the feria queen and La Sonora Dinamita.
- Oct. 5-6: cultural programming and folk dance.
- Oct. 7-8: a dance group and a comedy show.
- Oct. 9: La Fuerza de Chihuahua.
- Oct. 10: Banda La Reyna de la Laguna.
- Oct. 11: Cadetes de Linares de Valente Tijerina closes the feria.
For a sense of how other Mexican patron saint ferias build around a horse day, compare Feria Zaragoza Puebla 2026 and the Fiesta de las Fronteras in Rosarito, which rides the same Sunday.
What to do and what to watch next
- Riding? Contact the municipality of Allende this week to confirm the Saturday start time at Colonia Búfalo and what is provided at Estación Dorado.
- Book the farrier and inspect tack now, not Friday night.
- Watching? Be in Valle de Allende before noon on Sunday, Oct. 4. Stand back from the horses, keep children in hand and never walk behind a horse.
- Watch for changes. Times and artists in a feria program can move. Local Parral press and the municipality's channels are the places to check.
- Can't make it? The feria falls on the first Sunday of October every year, so the 2027 ride would likely be the weekend of Oct. 2-3.
