Feria Zaragoza Puebla 2026: the horse weekend at a glance
Feria Zaragoza Puebla 2026 runs Oct 3-13 in Zaragoza, Puebla, in honor of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, whose main feast day is Oct 12. The horse program sits on the second weekend: a traditional cabalgata on Saturday, Oct 10, then escaramuzas and a jaripeo ranchero on Sunday, Oct 11.
The published program lists all three at the Plaza de Toros (the cabalgata is listed as departing from there). We found no admission details for the horse events, so ask the municipality about tickets.
| Day | Time | Event |
|---|---|---|
| Sat, Oct 10 | 10:00 a.m. | Traditional cabalgata |
| Sun, Oct 11 | 12:00 p.m. | Escaramuzas |
| Sun, Oct 11 | 3:00 p.m. | Jaripeo ranchero |
Verify before you go. The times come from a fair-listing site (updated Sept 18); a local news report (Sept 15) confirms the dates of the cabalgata (Oct 10) and the equestrian shows and rodeo (Oct 11), but not the hours. Town programs shift, so check the municipality's official channels for the final schedule.

What is a cabalgata?
A cabalgata is a group ride, often a procession of riders in regional dress that moves through town streets or toward a festival site. It is part ride, part parade, part community reunion.
For the full history, from Guanajuato to Seville, read What Is a Cabalgata?. For a similar border-town event, see Fiesta de las Fronteras Rosarito 2026.
Expect these things on a feria cabalgata:
- Riders of mixed ages and experience, on horses of many breeds and types.
- A slow walk with stops, which makes it good for watching.
- Horses that may be excited by drums, firecrackers and cheering.
What are escaramuzas?
The escaramuza charra is the women's team event of Mexican charrería. A team of riders performs fast, choreographed patterns at the gallop, riding side-saddle in traditional dress, and is judged on precision and horsemanship. Charrería itself is on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, inscribed in 2016.
The Federación Mexicana de Charrería runs escaramuzas as its women's sector, with categories from children to adults. Our explainer, What Is Escaramuza Charra?, covers the rules and scoring.
What to watch for:
- Riders crossing at speed in tight formation without touching.
- Horses matched in size and gait, moving in unison.
- Sharp turns that show the horses' training and balance.
What is a jaripeo ranchero?
Jaripeo is a Mexican rodeo tradition tied to country fairs and ranch life. We have not seen details of the acts planned for this jaripeo ranchero.
We will not repeat the basics here. What Is Jaripeo? explains the format and its roots. Check the final program with the municipality for exactly which acts will be included.
A family guide to the day
Feria weekends are friendly, but crowded and loud. A little planning makes it easier for kids and for the animals.
Before you go
- Confirm times and gate information with the municipality.
- Arrive early on Saturday if you want a good curb spot for the cabalgata.
- Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and cash for small vendors.
- Pack ear protection for young children if there will be fireworks or loud music.
At the Plaza de Toros
- Sit where you can see the exits, and stay in your seat during the runs.
- Escaramuzas at noon and jaripeo at 3:00 p.m. are a long day. Eat and drink between them.
- Closed-toe shoes are better than sandals around a crowd and animal traffic.
Horse-welfare etiquette around crowds
Horses are prey animals. Crowds, flags, flashes and sudden noise can make a calm horse spin or bolt. For more on why, see horse behavior.
- Ask first. Always ask the rider or owner before touching or taking a photo up close.
- Don't feed. Treats, tortillas and candy can upset a horse's gut and make it pushy.
- Stay out of the blind spots. Do not walk directly behind a horse. Keep to the side, where it can see you.
- No flash, no popping balloons, no waving things in a horse's face.
- Keep kids close and dogs leashed. Teach children to stay back from hooves. Our horse safety for kids guide has simple rules.
- Follow the organizers. If staff ask you to move behind a line, do it quickly and calmly.
- Look at the horse. Sweaty, tired, or clearly distressed animals deserve a respectful distance. Report real concerns to the organizers, not to the rider in the middle of a ride.

What to do and watch next
On Saturday morning, watch how riders manage their horses in the crowd. On Sunday, notice the escaramuza teams' timing, then compare the tone of the afternoon jaripeo ranchero.
If you cannot attend, the format is repeated in towns across Mexico every autumn, so learn the three events and you will be able to enjoy any feria horse weekend. Keep an eye on the municipality's official social media for last-minute changes.
