Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf 2026: what's happening now

Update (2026-10-05): The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf 2026 is a $1 million Grade 1 race for 2-year-olds at one mile on grass, and it runs at Keeneland on Friday, Oct. 30, at 5:35 p.m. ET. Agate won Sunday's Bourbon for the automatic spot, and Santa Anita's Repo Man is a candidate for the race.

The race is the last on Future Stars Friday in Lexington, Kentucky. Two big preps were run on Oct. 4: Keeneland's $400,000 Castle & Key Bourbon (G2) at 1 1/16 miles, and Santa Anita's one-mile Zuma Beach (G3) and Surfer Girl (G3).

The Juvenile Turf already has Agate, plus Let Em Know from the Pilgrim (G2) at Belmont Park on Oct. 3 and three earlier qualifiers: Haffner (Aidan O'Brien, Acomb Stakes, Aug. 19), Al Hudaiba (Charlie Appleby, Summer Stakes, Sept. 12) and Folsom Blues (Joseph O'Brien, Vincent O'Brien National Stakes, Sept. 13). Pre-entries come in late October, so the final field is not set yet.

Bourbon Stakes 2026 results: Agate wins

Agate, a gelding by Karakontie, came through the middle of the pack in the stretch to win by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:42.64. Bold Leadership, the betting favorite, was second, and Real Goodbar was third, three-quarters of a length back. Agate went off at about 7-2.

He is trained by Kelsey Danner and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione. Before this he had won a maiden race on turf in July and was third in the listed Juvenile Mile at Kentucky Downs, so this is his first graded win. Trim Castle set the early pace.

What it means for the Juvenile Turf

Agate has the automatic berth. Bold Leadership is still looking for his first win, with seconds in the With Anticipation (G3) and now the Bourbon (G2). That keeps him in the conversation, but with no guaranteed spot.

Hemingway, the Brad Cox colt, had won a Kentucky Downs maiden by 8 1/4 lengths. He did not hit the board at 1 1/16 miles, and we have not seen a post-race plan for him.

Let Em Know was scratched from the Bourbon. He won the Pilgrim (G2) on Oct. 3, so he already has his Juvenile Turf spot, for trainer Whit Beckman.

Repo Man and the Santa Anita path

The West Coast now has its own Juvenile Turf candidate. Repo Man, a colt by Golden Pal, stayed unbeaten in two starts by winning the Zuma Beach Stakes (G3) at Santa Anita on Oct. 4 by a head. He covered the mile on turf in 1:36.05.

He is trained by Michael McCarthy, ridden by Umberto Rispoli and owned by Amerman Racing. The runner-up, Maxify, is his stablemate.

The finish was not clean. The two bumped in the stretch, Maxify's rider lodged an objection, and the stewards held a lengthy inquiry before ruling no change. The result stood, and Repo Man became the first graded stakes winner for his sire, Golden Pal, a Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint winner in 2020.

Daily Racing Form lists Repo Man as a Juvenile Turf candidate. BloodHorse quotes his trainer more carefully: both colts are still learning, and the Breeders' Cup is something to think about. We found no report of an automatic berth for the Zuma Beach, so he would need to be entered and make the field.

Vanta, the filly to know

In the Surfer Girl Stakes (G3) the same day, unbeaten Vanta won by three-quarters of a length in 1:35.17 and is now 3-for-3. Rispoli rode her for trainer Jeff Mullins. She rallied from sixth in a seven-horse field and is aimed at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, which goes at 4:15 p.m. ET on the same Friday.

Before the Bourbon: the rest of the field

Here is who else ran, for context:

• Popcorn (by Catholic Boy) came in 2-for-2 after the Kitten's Joy Stakes at Colonial Downs.
• Mid American (by Epicenter) came in off the Juvenile Sprint at Kentucky Downs, at 6 1/2 furlongs. The question was whether his speed would last around two turns.
• The rest of the entries were Heracles, Mad Mo and Blaring Ambition, along with Trim Castle and Real Goodbar.

What is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf?

It's the turf championship for 2-year-olds, horses in their first racing season. It started in 2007 at Monmouth Park and became a Grade 1 in 2011.

The idea is simple. Some young horses are bred and built to run on grass, not dirt, and this race gives them their own title. Many are bred for distance, so this can be an early look at future classic turf horses.

Why European juveniles travel for it

In Europe, nearly all racing is on grass, and the best 2-year-olds run in Group races from summer on. A one-mile turf race in late fall fits their program well.

The results show it:

• Aidan O'Brien has trained 8 winners, including the last 4: Victoria Road (2022), Unquestionable (2023), Henri Matisse (2024) and Gstaad (2025).
• Charlie Appleby won it with Outstrip (2013), Line of Duty (2018) and Modern Games (2021).
• The last U.S.-trained winner was Fire At Will in 2020, trained by Mike Maker at Keeneland.

So Agate, Repo Man and the other American hopefuls will probably face a strong group from Ireland, England and France. Watch the European trainers' plans over the next three weeks.

How Keeneland's turf mile plays

Keeneland's turf course is a 7 1/2-furlong oval. A one-mile race needs a little more than one lap, so the start sits in the stretch, close to the first turn.

Here's what that means for the race:

• Post position matters. A short run to the first turn makes it hard for outside horses to get in. They can be caught wide, and wide trips cost ground.
• Tactical speed helps. A horse that can break well and take a good spot, near the front or saving ground on the rail, avoids trouble in a big field.
• Don't count out closers. A Horse Racing Nation study of races through 2022 found that past winners were all stalking a few lengths back or closing from farther behind; none led all the way. Good position early and a strong kick late is the winning mix.
• Ground matters. Fall rain can soften the turf. That can suit European horses, which are used to softer going.

The Bourbon was 1 1/16 miles on the same course, which made it the best local rehearsal on the calendar. Repo Man's one-mile Santa Anita race is a different, West Coast turf test.

How Win and You're In works

The Breeders' Cup Challenge series names certain races around the world as Win and You're In races. The winner gets an automatic, fees-paid spot in a matching Breeders' Cup race.

Keep in mind:

• The spot is offered, not required. Owners still have to pre-enter and decide to run.
• Other horses get in through points and a panel's rankings, so a loss in the Bourbon doesn't end anyone's chances.
• The Juvenile Turf already has at least five qualifiers: Agate (Bourbon), Let Em Know (Pilgrim), Haffner (Acomb), Al Hudaiba (Summer) and Folsom Blues (National Stakes). Fillies, such as Amusingly, who won the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère, do not get an automatic start in this colts-and-geldings race.
